Slightly further afield, the historic island of Lindisfarne and gorgeous Bamburgh Castle are well worth a visit. A short drive out Alnwick takes you to the lovely Northumberland National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Here there are many opportunities for walking, cycling and horse riding as the area is covered by 700 miles of footpaths and rights of way. The magnificent Cheviot Hills, with their abundance of fascinating flora and fauna, are only a short drive away. Cragside House, a fascinating and beautifully located National Trust property, is highly recommended, but you’ll need a whole day to experience both the house and gardens!
