How to get there
Umbria has a regional airport, the Aeroporto Internazionale dell'Umbria – Perugia “San Francesco d'Assisi” (airport.umbria.it), often know by its former name of Sant'Egidio, midway between Perugia (12km) and Assisi.
Despite its grand name and a new terminal designed to handle 500,000 passengers a year, Perugia's airport is still served by only a handful of international carriers. In the UK, Ryanair (ryanair.com) flies from Stansted (currently Monday, Wednesday and Friday). Domestic connections link the airport to Trapani (Sicily), Olbia and Cagliari (Sardinia) and Bergamo in northern Italy.
The next nearest airport, Florence's Amerigo Vespucci, or Peretola (aeroporto.firenze.it), is similarly small, but is convenient for Perugia and the rest of northern Umbria, which can be accessed by train (see below) or the A1 motorway. Vueling (vueling.com) flies once daily from Heathrow and CityJet (cityjet.com) has up to four flights weekly from London City.
Tuscany's main airport, Pisa, offers far more choice, but has a driving or train journey time of over two hours to the Umbrian border. It is served by, among others, British Airways (Gatwick, Heathrow), easyJet (Bristol, Gatwick, Luton), Jet2com (Belfast, Leeds/Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle, and East Midlands) and Ryanair (Edinburgh, Glasgow-Prestwick, Leeds/Bradford, Liverpool, Stansted and Dublin, plus Bournemouth and East Midlands in summer).
