How to get there

Kandalaksha is a transportation hub. Several trains from central Russia a day but it is ~36 hours from Moscow. The drive from Mosow is long but will give you a cross-section of the country more, probably more intense and historically significant than the famous Trans-Siberian. Circumstances permitting I'd start in Kiev as this is where Rus has started according to most accounts, and make Novgorod another key point. I've travelled by car with a camper in tow several times between Kandalaksha and Moscow and will be happy to advise you, or even to arrange such a trip. For the practical it is train. The cheapest ticket is around $70 from St. Petersburg and $100 from Moscow, and about twice that for something semi-decent. The area is suitable for walking and cycling, and you can borrow my two bicycles (one city bike and one hybrid). Skis and boat will be available soon, and the area is highly suitable for that. I'm playing with the idea of horses too...
