How to get there

There are several ways to travel to Benbecula, the most popular for holiday makers being through the ferry ports at Barra (before sailing across to Eriskay) and Lochboisdale (from Oban or Mallaig) before travelling north to Benbecula. Travellers from further north will arrive via Berneray (crossing from the Isle of Harris) or Lochmaddy (from Uig in Skye). Situated centrally, Balivanich is just 30-40 minutes drive from all the ports. Visit Calmac's site to book your ferry. It's advisable to do this in plenty of time (preferably months in advance) as ferries fill up very quickly - especially in the summer season.

Alternatively, Balivanich is also served from Glasgow and Stornoway by air with 36 Winfield Way just one minute's drive from the airport. Depending on the direction of approach, you might fly over the house just before landing at Benbecula airport. Check the Loganair site for flight bookings.

Getting around

Public transport does exist with a bus service running the length of the islands daily until early evening. But unless you are a keen cyclist (and there are many who visit the islands every year) it is essential to have a car to get around. (There are also taxis for those who would like to visit the local watering holes to let their hair down of an evening!). For bus timetables, visit the local authority website (cne-siar dot gov dot uk) or pick up a timetable at the post office or tourist shops. If you happen to be out for a walk, don't be surprised if one of the locals stops to offer you a lift - we're friendly folk in the Hebrides!
