A car is great for exploring the area but public transport is also fine. The bus service operates in Barga and the train station is a short bus or taxi ride away.

The drive from Pisa is not difficult. It takes just over an hour using the autostrada to Lucca and then the normal road along the Serchio valley. If you plan to explore the back roads an automatic car makes it easier.
