Location description from manager

The England region

Quite simply, whatever your interest, Manchester's got it!

You want bars, clubs, restaurants, nightlife? From the famous "curry mile" (more than worth a visit!) in Rusholme, every cuisine is catered for somewhere in the city. From Armenian & African, Mongolian Barbeques, Vietnamese, Portugese, Kosher, Halal through to Vegetarianism. Find yourself a Hyde's or Holt's pub and treat yourself to one of the cheapest (and best) pints in the UK. Ask at your hotel where the celebs are hanging out or take in an all nighter at Jillys Rockworld.

The Mancs know how to party and you can enjoy a good night every day of the week (the weekend starts on Thursday). There are at least 5 different areas within the city centre for drinking, where the pubs and bars follow in quick succession - one (the Printworks) even has all under the one roof. Each area has its own vibe, the Northern Quarter is renowned for its live music and up-and-coming DJs, but some even allow you to bring your own tunes on MP3! The Locks and Deansgate are known for their scantily clad girls and stag and hen parties. The bars and clubs on and around Oxford Road cater to the student population. Canal Street and the surrounding area offers a vibrant and tolerant atmosphere to party people. The bars and clubs mainly cater for the gay and lesbian crowd, but there's nothing stopping any tolerant, fun-loving person joining in the shindigs going on there! Canal Street is also the focal point of the annual Mardi Gras festival, normally held on August Bank Holiday weekend. Typically, street carnivals and funfairs are set up throughout the period, with a citywide parade on the Sunday. It's not quite on a par with New Orleans, but is one of Europe's largest and most popular gay events.

You like shopping? If you've got a full day devoted to shopping make time for the independants in the Northern Quarter where you'll find cutting edge fashion by young designers. If you want to keep dry head a couple of miles out of town for the renowned Trafford Centre or try the revamped Arndale Centre in the city centre. For designers go to the department stores Harvey Nichols and Selfridges (they are next to each other) or head to The Avenue between Deansgate and Spinningfield.

You're into arts and culture? Salford's Lowry is a world class showcase of some of the artist's finest works while the Imperial War Museum offers a sober and reflective view of the tragedies of conflict. Manchester Museum is something to behold, as is the Science and Industry Museum. There is something for everyone in this city. The Bridgewater Hall is home to two of the UK's great orchestras, the BBC Philharmonic and the Halle. There are great theatres, the Lowry in Salford Quays, the Palace on Oxford or the arenas (MEN and Manchester Central) host shows by world performers from right across the musical spectrum.

How about sport? Football is well represented by Premier League teams in Greater Manchester. Manchester has 2 world class teams in City and United. Both offer hospitality packages as well as stadium tours and shops where you can buy merchandise.

In summer, England cricket icon 'Freddie' Flintoff struts his stuff with Lancashire at 'the other' Old Trafford, while fans of both rugby codes are catered for at Sale Sharks for union and Wigan Warriors and Salford Reds for league. The National Cycling Centre is located just across Alan Turing Way from the Manchester City Eastlands Stadium and if you want to do some swimming why not visit the Manchester Aquatics Centre.

Like the outdoor life? Manchester is within a couple of hours of four of the UK's finest national parks. One, the Peak District comes to within twelve miles of the city centre (and only takes 1/2 an hour to get to). Get yourself a Peak Wayfarer day ticket which gives unlimited travel from Manchester to anywhere within the park. Take the local service train from Piccadilly station to Sheffield (operated by Northern Rail). Get off at Edale, go to the Information Centre, get the Edale walks leaflet and do any of them, they're all brilliant and when you've finished, have a pint at The Nags Head before catching your train back.

If all that travelling's a bit much, there are plenty of outdoor activities inside Manchester; canoeing and dinghying at the Quays or Sale water park, climbing the Ice Wall at the NorthFace shop, or just hanging out at Piccadilly Gardens on a warm sunny day and watching the kids go mad for the fountains.
