Location description from owner

The Chania Prefecture region

The prefecture of Chania is the western most division of the island of Crete covering an area of 2376 square km and with a population of 150,387 residents. The range spans west to east and vanishes close to the prefecture of Rethymno, having formed many plateaus such as Omalos (altitude 1080 metres) and Askifou (altitude 730 metres) and having been divided by wild gorges and ravines of exceptional beauty like that of Agia Irene, Samaria, Arathena, Imbrou and many more along the way. It generously allows a big fertile plain to unfold in the north, fertilizing it with its abundant water sources which transform into life-giving rivers, its biggest being Platanias (ancient Iardano) and Kiliaris. The morphology of the landscape and the location of Crete in the centre of the Mediterranean have a direct effect on the climate of the prefecture of Chania which is characterized as temperate Mediterranean and particularly dry with sunlight 70% of the year. The longevity of the Cretan people along with the lowest mortality rate is mostly due to their diet, the roots of which are as old as time itself. Cretans eat whatever their land offers them: fruit, wild greens, vegetables, pulses, dairy products and bread. The Cretan soul often reaches the point of exaggeration in their valour and passion for freedom, their courage, strength, love for their country and nature even in their hospitality towards strangers. We cordially invite you to Chania and proffer you this gift which in our day and age is becoming more and more scarce.

Maleme

MALEME, is a historical village, from the post Minoan period, on the coast of the northern site of west Crete, with approx. 800 inhabitants. It lies on small hills in the greenest region of Crete, surrounded by olive trees, orange trees and wine yards and offers to the gourmets the famous olive oil, the excellent thyme honey and the homemade Cretan wines. The visitor will enjoy the beautiful sea, the fantastic restaurants and taverns on the beach, the majestic view on the 2500 m “white mountains”, the amazing natural beauty of the region, the gorges, the walking on E4 alpin paths as well as the archaeological places Kydonia, Polyrhynia and Falasarna, the post Minoan tomb (all artefacts found here are displayed in the archaeological museum of Chania, in the old Venetian city), and the memorial and the graves of the fallen German troops during 2nd WW. Maleme is remembered mostly for the fierce fighting, that took place here during the German assault on Crete in 1941. The battle of Crete is a worldwide symbol of struggle for freedom.

“Absolutely Wonderful!!!”

Dear Michael & Mary; Thanks you so much for the use of your wonderful villa - it was perfect - so peaceful and private, and with every comfort and amenity one could ask for! The pool was awesome and we really enjoyed each day, swimming, tanning, walking along the beach and eating at the "Lamb in Oven" restaurant down the street! You have spoiled us and from now on, wherever we travel, we have decided: no more hotels - we have to have our own "Villa"!

Dear Kate and Cornell, thank you very much for your review and for your kind words! We are glad to hear that you enjoyed so much your holidays with us! This is exactly what our goal is and we do always our best for this! We trust we'll see you again or your friends!

“Just Perfect”

We stayed at Villa Helios for two weeks in August. Staying in the Villa were 2 families, 4 adults and 3 children. The villa had plenty of room for all of us. It is extremley well equipt with everything you need. The villa is kept very clean and the grounds are lovely. There is a large outside pool with a nice patio area with table and chairs and pleny of grassed areas for the children to play. It is well situated in the village, just a very short walk from the beach, supermarket and taverna's. Maleme itself is very quiet but has all the amenities you need. The villa owner's Mary and Michael go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need for a perfect holiday and have lots of information on places to visit if you want to do so. We took the little tourist train to the water park which was good fun for the kids. We had a very relaxing break and will definitley be returning.

Dear Mandy, thank you very much for your review and for your good words! You were also distinguished guests and we are looking forward to welcome you again in Maleme! Best regards! Mary and Michael

We are a family of 5 who has been staying in this Villa each summer for 8 years, and as you can understand there is a reason why we are returning each year. For us, this is the perfect vacation. Crete is just wonderful, and there is plenty to do and see both for young and old. The Villa is spacious, with a wonderful private pool and barbecue. It is 50 meters from the beach (pebbles) and the beach front tavernas. The village (Maleme) is quiet, but you have everything you need and It is not far to Platanias if you would like to see the tourist crowds. The owners, Mary and Michael are probably the kindest and most service minded persons in the world. Make sure to rent a car when you are there and ask Mary and Michael where to go.

This is exactly what we want. To make our guests (friends) feeling like home! Thank you Yngvar for your long lasting faith and for your friendship. We love you all! We are looking forward to meeting you again next year!
