The Andalucia region

Malaga is the capital city of the Costa del Sol and its international airport provides the gateway to all of the other Andalusian towns. Malaga airport is one of the largest in Spain and in a typical year can welcome up to 10 million visitors. Malaga also serves as a major port and an industrial centre for Southern Spain. Entrance to and exit from Malaga is made easy by the N340 highway and the coastal rail service. There is a wonderful Three Kings Festival in Malaga each year at the beginning of January, so if you're visiting during this time don't forget to take the kids along.

Malaga is a city steeped in more than 3,000 years of history. Excavations have discovered evidence of the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Moors. As a result, there is a large selection of historical monuments in this city. Malaga's cathedral is known as La Manquita, meaning “the little one armed lady”. Due to the length of time, which it took to build the cathedral, it denotes Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-classical styles.

Close to Malaga cathedral is the Alcazaba, which is a fifteenth century Moorish fort and is one of the most important in the area. The roof of the Alcazabar offers panoramic views of Malaga city and the port. Further on from the Alcazabar is Malaga's Castle, which stands on Monte de Gibralfaro. At the foot of the hill, Malaga's ayuntamiento (town hall) is located, next to the city's museum in the Palacio de la Aduana. In fact, Malaga has so much to offer as a result of its history, that the best way to see it is by open top bus and there are many in the city.

Malaga is also well worth a visit during one of its many festivals. The Fiestas here are numerous and each one is celebrated with the vigour that is synonymous with Andalucia. The main Fiesta is the Feria, which takes place in the middle of August.

Whilst there is plenty to see and do in Malaga, many visitors pass straight through on the way to the ever popular resorts of the Costa del Sol. If you are planning a holiday to the Costa del Sol check out cheap flights to Malaga with Monarch, with regular flights from Manchester, Birmingham, London Luton and London Gatwick

With Malaga's great weather, you may choose to explore the city and its surroundings by foot. Take a stroll along the beach promenades or discover what treasures Malaga's narrow streets may lead. It is a very relaxing and therapeutic activity.

However, there are naturally other ways of getting around Malaga- and more importantly, that won't involve tired feet!

Easter (17th to 24th of April): During the Semana Santa or Holy Week, Malaga dons a more contemplative and prayerful atmosphere, yet the scene is still full of color and music. Semana Santa has no fixed date, but may be celebrated either in March or April. The biggest festival in Malaga is held in August, when the city celebrates the Feria de Malaga. With colorful presentations, various activities, top-notch flamenco and colorful costumes, it's easy to see why people flock to Malaga from all over the world during the festival!

Feria (13th to 21th August): The fairs and festivals in Malaga is where the Malagueños' fun-loving and social spirit come to the forefront. Malaga goes all out in its celebrations and festivals. The common ingredients in Malaga's festivals are: music (lots of it, often given by murgas, or street musician bands), color (as can be seen in street and house decors and in the fancy dresses and costumes donned by the locals), and general merriment. In February, Malaga comes alive with the Carnival, which is Spain's answer to the Mardi Gras. There is much dancing and revelry to be had at this time of the year.

September is a time for honoring the Virgen de la Victoria, one of Malaga's revered patron saints. October might as well be re-named Picasso- you'll quickly see why! Picassian October focuses on celebrating the artist and his talent. December is, of course, the time for Christmas and New Year celebrations. In addition, there are feasts that honor the city's patron saints. The fiesta de San Juan and the fiesta del Carmen are two such fiestas.
