The Lasithi Prefecture region

The ancient centre of Europe's oldest civilisation, Crete is now one of its most popular tourist destinations, partly due to the beautiful weather all year round and the spectacular historic sites. Why not visit the Palace of Knossos? This was the residence of the legendary King Minos c.1550. The labyrinth in which the Minotaur was imprisoned is said to have been possibly derived from the floor plan of the PalaceOr you could take a trip to the Heraklion Museum which houses the world's most spectacular and magnificent collection of Minoan art and culture. The collection covers a period of 5000 years, spanning from the from neolithic era to the Graeco Roman period. For something completely different then don't miss the Samaria Gorge National Park. This is 16km long and starts at an altitude of 1250m and takes you all the way down to the shores of the Libyan sea in Agia Roumeli. The gorge itself is found in the White Mountains in West Crete. There is always the option of a trip to Spinalonga (Kalydon) Island too!

Makry-Gialos

In addition to taking time by the pool and soaking up the view, you could hit the harbour for lunch as there are many little cafes there. You could also: Visit the Water City and Acqua Plus - two water parks in the nearby area. Perfect for if you are travelling with children, or the young at heart!Take a boat trip to Koufonisi island a small island off the south eastern coast of Crete in the Libyan sea. This island is covered in parts in a dense sand and reminds you of the landscape of an African desert.. Archaeological digs have discovered a whole colony laying buried under the sands.Take a walk among the many beautiful and easily accessible gorges and mountain pine forests. Or visit Kapsa Monastery, and the historic villages of Skinokapsala, Orino and Pervolakia.

“Wounderful Holiday with the hole Familie”

Reviewed 16 Feb 2013

Hi Ron, hi Linda. We had an wounderful nice Holiday with the hole Family in the Vila Lyronda and because my englisch isn't so excellent I continue in german: Wir hatten einen sehr schönen, erholsamen Urlaub mit der ganzen Familie in der Villa Lyronda!

“Fantastic villa in a beautiful valley”

Reviewed 26 Jan 2013

We have visited twice now with our 2 children and parents. The villa is ample size to accommodate us all comfortably. There is nothing quite like the feeling of diving into the pool on a hot sunny day (i.e. every day in Crete!). The kids loved the pool. In the evening it is fantastic sitting on the veranda watching the sunset over the mountains opposite. The villa is on a peaceful site and not overlooked. A short (12-15mins walk, 4-5 mins in car) distance away is the bay of mykrigialos where there are loads of restaurants and bars to choose from. There is a great nightlife that would better suit families and young professionals wanting to unwind, more than 18-30years olds wanting to go wild (Malia would suit them better). There are great days out to be had nearby including some fantastic gorges to walk up (with the chance to cool off in crystal clear streams along the way!). We had a great time and plan to go back. Ron and Linda have worked hard to make sure visitors have a great stay and the villa was clean and well-maintained.

“Amazing!”

From the moment you step into this apartment you know the owners look after it. It is beautifully presented and they seem to have thought of everything it even has a full size pub pool table!!! The drive from Heraklion to Makrijals took us around 1.5 hours actually driving but I must say the drive is stunning and well worth it. We stopped at a couple of Tavernas on the way and was pleasantly surprised how friendly everyone was. Once you arrive you are greeted by a house which you can't help but immediately fall in love with. It was so peaceful and quiet it was easy to fall asleep in the hot weather with the comfortable breeze blowing through the gorge. The town is lovely and not full of tourists like many places in Crete we have been to already. It has everything you need, many traditional tavernas where you can sit literally on the beach and sample local cuisine (lamb chops highly recommended) or alternatively there is a pizza place if you fancy a kebab after a couple of tasty beverages. Generally the food is fantastic and the wine is around 8€ a litre and varies from place to place. There is many things to do and many places to see and next time we will tackle the walk through the gorge. Oh and don't forget Splash bar a small cocktail bar with friendly staff.
