The Lasithi Prefecture region

The most southerly island of Europe and the largest in Greece, Crete enjoys one of the best climates in Europe with more than 300 days of sunshine every year, and sea temperatures that allow swimming from its southern shores as early as April and as late as November.

The people are hospitable and friendly. The scenery is spectacular with rugged limestone mountains rising steeply, and azure seas off rocky coasts. Carved into this landscape are idyllic coves and beaches. And there is a rich history and culture to be discovered with archaeological sites spread across the island.

Makry-Gialos

Situated in the south east of Crete, Makrigialos, (meaning long beach and awarded the blue flag), is an unspoilt resort with a particular attraction for those looking for an authentic flavour of Cretan life. The evenings come alive with numerous tavernas and bars serving delicious food from local produce with the fish dishes particularly recommended. Fridays see the village hosting a street market.

Daily boat trips to Lefki or Koufonisia run from the harbour. Makrigialos is well known for hosting the prestigious Casa Dei Mezzo music festival with musicians coming from all over the world. The nearby village of Agios Stefanos is home to the Sasteria public observatory with 4 telescopes at your disposal for you to observe the heavens.

Close by are the towns of Lerapetra and Sitia, both good for shopping, and the latter with a particularly lovely marina. The drive to Sitia through the mountains beautifully illustrates by remote monasteries, quaint churches, beehives on hillsides and lovely villages what is so attractive about this area.

Within 15 minutes drive of Makrigialos is the village of Pefki, one of the many beautiful mountain villages, steeped in history, with narrow winding streets, and beautifully stone houses covered in geraniums, bougainvillea, and vines and dotted with rustic tavernas serving traditional Greek food. Well worth a Sunday evening visit!

A wide range of water sports are available including scuba diving, fishing, sailing etc. There is also a Go-Kart centre within 20 minutes drive.

“Heaven on earth!”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2013

Markigalos is the most peaceful, friendly, safe and absolutely stunning little town. Incredible beaches! The view from the apartment at bayview as the sun sets behind the mountains is heaven on earth! The apartment itself is wonderfully equipped with everything you need, Great surroundings and great pool. We stayed for 25 days and we felt very at home. Location wise, bayview is far from most of the town but in a good way. You get the peace and quiet from the busy town centre, however close enough to shops and restaurants. It is far enough to definitely need a car. A car is essential in Crete. The one big stand out was the very welcoming nature of the reception, especially Anja. She was extremely helpful and a very lovely host. In fact, the whole village of markigalos is very friendly and relaxed. Finally David, who we rented the apartment off...we were very pleased as to how communicative he was. He was very informative about everything to do with the apartment and markigalos. he gave us lots of info about Crete, where to go, things to do, and he provided us with lots of helpful tips and tricks. All and all a lovely stay. We will definitely be back :)

“An excellent apartment & base in which to explore this lovely island”

Reviewed 19 Jul 2012

I travelled to Crete with 3 friends & used this apartment at Bayview as our base. It was a very clean, well appointed apartment completed to a high spec. The balcony provides a seating area on which to enjoy the lovely views of the sea & mountains while enjoying your meal. There are 2 pools to enjoy if you want a restful day at the apartment. WiFi was an added bonus. There are beaches situated within walking distance and also a 5 min drive by car takes you into the lovely small harbour town of Makriogialos which has lovely shops & many well priced taverna's. From there, a drive of 30min & more will take you to many other larger towns and places to visit. I spent nine days here & only wish I had had longer to continue exploring this island from this excellent base. I look forward to returning & wouldn't hesitate to book this apartment again.

“A great place from which to enjoy the island of Crete.”

I had a great time with friends, holidaying in Crete and our apartment in Bayview provided a more than adequate base from which to sample the island. The apartment is finished to a very good standard with all the modern appliances you'd require. The balcony provides a great dining area with beautiful mountain views. If you wish to stay put there are two well maintained pools within the complex, but only a few minutes drive will get you to either a local beach with it's own taverna or into Makriogialos with it's very reasonably priced restaurants, harbour, stretch of beach, and a laid back, non touristy feel. Anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour by car will get you to larger towns for shops, markets, boat excursions, and more beaches. All in all Crete is an island well worth seeing, and Bayview provided us with a great base from which to explore and enjoy it. Adrian

“Quality small apartment within excellent development and area :-))”

This was a trip to explore some of Crete with friends, 4 of us in total. The facilities at Bayview including lovely swimming pools x2 were of a highly maintained standard and within a peacefully situated development. The apartment was clean with everything you would need inside and had wonderful views out to the sea and looking up to the mountains. The area itself had lovely places to eat and plenty to visit and see and do . A car is probably the best way to travel and it is a 5 min drive into Makriogialos. Overall a great spot from which to appreciate Crete and not too touristy.

“An excellent place for a couple to stay to explore the unspoilt south east of Crete.”

We had a lovely holiday in this apartment at Bayview. The accommodation and site was of a very high standard and the apartment has an excellent balcony with views of the sea and mountains. It is an ideal size for a couple. We would find it a little small for four adults. We enjoyed the area very much - Makrigialos has lots of lovely reasonable restaurants and a good sandy beach which has the warmest sea I have been in in the Greek Islands. The Green Beach and Taverna is a must - the food there is lovely and typically Greek. We didn't hire a car and instead used the local buses. The trip from the airport was easy and cost only 11 euros. The bus stop was just across the road from the arrivals area at the airport and we had about an half hour wait. The journey took about two hours to Irepetria but gave you lovely views of Crete. We had an hours wait in Irepetria for the local bus to Makrigialos but there is a cafe at the bus station so that was no problem. Alternatively you can get a taxi from Irepetria to Bayview, which we did on the way home, for about 37 Euros. All the bus times are available on line. It is a pleasant 25 minute walk along the road from the apartment to Makrigialos, however, it does involve some moderate hills so if you are less able you would need to drive.

This guest took the unusual step of using public transport - and found it very acceptable in getting both to and from the airport and around the island. Very pleased they enjoyed their holiday.
