If you are looking for somewhere to rest, chill out, and completely recharge your batteries, this little one-bedroomed holiday cottage in the beautiful Limousin region of South-West France is perfect for you! There is an excellent, FREE Wi-Fi Internet connection. Your well-behaved pet is welcome.
Limousin-Cottage is a traditional and very quaint 18C stone cottage, in a quiet off-road location, in a tiny Haute Vienne village, and roughly a mile away from the nearest town, St Sulpice Les Feuilles. If you yearn for a get-away-from-it-all vacation in the countryside, and peace and quiet, the cottage will be ideal for you! The Limousin is one of the most sparsely populated regions of France, and has forests, lakes and mountains in abundance. The Limousin air is pure and revitalising.
The cottage is available all year round.
There are always excellent markets and brocantes (car boot sales) going on all over the region. The cottage is absolutely perfect for weekly lets or for longer stays, and is ideally situated for easy access to the whole of the Limousin region, via the toll-free A20 motorway, for those of you wishing to house-hunt, or just to get to know the region. Junction 22 is just a few minutes drive away. We offer a discount for a longer stay, according to season and length of stay.
Current availability remaining for 2015 is just a few dates in November. Please consider booking in advance for Summer 2016. For a month-long stay, any period of the year (including peak season) we offer four weeks for the price of three!
The front of the cottage is on a safe little courtyard parking area for residents or guests - and is well away from the road. You can park safely, off-road, directly in front of your door. There is open countryside in all directions from the village, with quiet lanes passing through quaint hamlets for lovely walks. From the garden at the rear you can enjoy countryside views in this beautiful location, and listen to the birdsong. It is lovely to sit outside until bedtime with a glass or two of wine, marvel at the crystal-clear night sky and spectacular star constellations, and you may even hear the beautiful song of the nightingale who sings his little heart out in the Summer. There is exterior lighting for your convenience.
The cottage is a perfect getaway for a couple to relax and unwind, but can sleep up to four. Your baby or infant can share the double bedroom - a travel cot can be provided at no extra charge, as well as a high chair and stair safety gate. There is also a double sofabed in the sitting room, plus a single fold-up bed, ideal for use either in the sitting room or bedroom. All bedding and towels are provided.
There are two mountain bikes available free for our guests to use - but you must bring your own safety helmets if wishing to make use of them. We have a no smoking policy inside the cottage - but smokers are of course welcome to sit outside and smoke if they choose. The little bench in front of the cottage seems to be the favourite spot!
Limoges airport is just a 40 minute drive away, and is served by both Ryanair and Flybe from various UK airports.
The cosy and very quaint one bedroomed accommodation offers:
A very comfortable through sitting/dining room with beamed ceiling and flagged floor, English and French TV, and FREE Broadband Internet access (wi-fi) for your laptop or tablet. The log-burning stove makes it a cosy retreat during the Winter, and in the heat of the Summer the very thick stone walls keep the cottage beautifully cool. There is a comfortable double sofabed in this room. There is also a DVD player, and a good selection of DVD's, books and board games to choose from. You will find a comprehensive information folder in the cottage with lots of places to go, events, local attractions, etc.
There is a compact but practical and well-equipped kitchen. There is ample crockery and glassware, and a good range of cooking utensils. The kitchen opens directly out into the garden and patio area. You can dine in style whether inside or outside.
The spacious and quiet double bedroom, with double bed, overlooks the garden and open countryside to the rear of the cottage, and the light and airy modern shower room, with power shower and heated towel radiator, is right next to the bedroom. All our guests remark on how comfortable the bed is and how well they sleep. My theory is that it's the pure, fresh Limousin air that tires them out!
The cottage is practical and well-equipped for a longer stay too, with washing machine, hoover, iron and ironing board, in fact all your likely day to day needs. It has it's own little garden and patio area at the rear for your 'al fresco' dining and barbecues, and beautiful countryside views beyond. Barbecue, table and chairs and two sun loungers provided. It is wonderful to sit out with a good book, glass of wine, and listen to the remarkable birdsong.
Nearby is a beautiful lake, Lac de Mondon, Cromac, with a lovely open air swimming pool during the Summer, fishing in the lake, and spectacular riverside walks through what can only be described as a medieval forest! The River Benaize at this point is known as 'The Boiling Pot', for reasons which become obvious after rainfall! It is rare to encounter another living soul when on this walk. There is also a poolside bar restaurant at Lac Mondon, with live entertainment at weekends during the Summer. In high Summer there are events going on at Lac Mondon, such as the night market, barbeque and cycle races. Last Summer we even enjoyed hot-air balloon rides by the lakeside!
This region is known as the French 'Lake District'. There are several other lakes in the vicinity, with beaches where you can swim, and a wide range of watersports. Lac de St Pardoux is a very large lake, with beaches, about 40 minutes' drive away. Lac d'Eguzon is about half an hour away. The area is perfect for all types and levels of fishing. We can provide our guests with comprehensive information on places to fish.
For lovers of culture, you will be spoiled for choice on a Limousin holiday. Within easy driving distance you can follow the Richard the Lionheart trail, visiting chateaux he actually stayed in along the way. You may also enjoy a visit to Montmorillon, 'the city of writers'. You may wish to visit the WW2 martyr village of Oradour sur Glane, about 40 minutes drive from the cottage. Limoges itself is a very cultural and historical city, the capital of the Limousin, and famous Worldwide for it's porcelain. There is a great monthly brocante in the medieval streets surrounding the cathedral.
Le Dorat is another lovely medieval town in which to spend a day or evening, and there are also farmers markets, where you can buy fresh meat and other produce direct from the farmer and barbecue it yourself there and then on the barbecues provided. During the Summer there are horse-racing meetings at Le Dorat.
A 15 minute drive from the cottage, at Les Herolles, there is a huge monthly farmers market, all year round. There is livestock on show, plus a vast selection of food and non-food market stalls.
We can recommend some really nice local restaurants, where you can enjoy some of the famous produce of the region, including the renowned Limousin beef. If you don't wish to drive, there is an excellent French chef in the village, Herve, who prepares authentic French meals to take out at surprisingly inexpensive rates.
We are happy to welcome your well-behaved pet to stay with you.

In the heat of the Summer the cottage always remains refreshingly cool inside, due to the very thick granite walls. The fitted kitchen is compact, but well-equipped, including a washing machine. You can't help but totally relax and get into ''France mode'' (as our friends quaintly describe it!) From the cottage there is easy access to the toll-free North/South A20 motorway (Junctions 21/22 about 5-10 minutes away) so it is ideally situated for exploring the whole of the Limousin region. We are at the very top tip of the Haute Vienne (Dept 87) and right on the doorstep of the Vienne (86) the Indre (36) and the Creuse (23)
Our weekly prices are inclusive of gas, water, property tax, Wi-Fi Internet and all bedding and towels, Electricity is charged at the end of your stay, by meter at current EDF tarif, with the exception of July and August, when electricity is included in the rent. |Further details outdoors|
The front of the cottage opens directly onto a small, safe courtyard parking area for residents - it is not situated by a road. You can safely park your car, off-road, right in front of your door. The cottage is quietly tucked in behind the Roman origin church of St. Gervais St. Protais in the village of Mailhac sur Benaize, 87160. The nearest town is St Sulpice les Feuilles, just 2 kms away. (The church is no longer used for regular masses, so no church bells to wake you up on Sunday mornings!) It is situated in a little row of four cottages. The little garden at the rear of the cottage overlooks open countryside. There is also open countryside in all directions from the cottage, and many quiet lanes to explore, taking you through quaint hamlets. Perfect for countryside walks. Your pet is welcome.
The Limousin region
This is a beautiful, unspoilt and very rural area of South-West France, with lakes, forests and mountains, and with lots of medieval towns to explore. The area is in fact known as the French 'Lake District' It is also the burial place of Richard the Lionheart, and you will find many interesting medieval towns and chateaux to visit. There is plenty to do in the local area, like fishing, swimming, hiking, horse-riding, clay pigeon shooting, water sports, canoeing or even hot-air ballooning for the more adventurous amongst you! There are always fleamarkets and vide-greniers going on in the region, and as an added bonus for those of you who love a good rummage, there is a second-hand warehouse less than 1 km along the road to St Sulpice les Feuilles, where, you name it - you are likely to find it! In the summer the official average temperature is 25 degrees, although it can get considerably warmer, often reaching 30 degrees or more. We get lots and lots of sunshine, even out of season! The cottage is also ideal for a Winter let. Just a mile or so along the road from the village is Lac de Mondon, with a beautiful open-air swimming pool, poolside bar/restaurant, and where you can take spectacular long riverside walks, with prehistoric caves and a waterfall! Limoges is a beautiful city to explore, and has a great monthly brocante or flea-market in the medieval streets around the cathedral. There is also an excellent, huge, monthly market at Les Herolles, about a 15 minute drive from the cottage. It is reported to be one of the biggest markets in France. Limoges airport (served by Ryanair and Flybe from several UK airports) is just a 40 minute drive from the cottage, or it is around a 6 to 7 hour drive down from the Channel ports. The charming nearby town of La Souterraine has a TGV fast train station.
Mailhac sur Benaize
Limousin-Cottage is ideally situated for you to explore the whole of the Limousin Region, via the toll-free A20 motorway, which is just a 5-10 minute drive away.
On mid-Summers day the area participates hugely in the very popular music festival, with free open air performances in virtually all the towns, which end with fireworks. The festival in Limoges, the capital city of the Limousin, is very vibrant. Limoges is also a nice place for a day trip (40 minutes by car from the cottage) and is famous for it's porcelain manufacturing. The museum of porcelain is a must for a visit, as also is the ''quartier de bouchers'' - in the old part of the city.
Also not to be missed is the very poignant martyr's village of Oradour sur Glane. In WW2 the whole village was massacred, and it has been left entirely as it stood at that time, as a tribute.
From early Spring to late Autumn you will find there are Sunday car boot sales ('brocantes') in various nearby towns and villages, as well as some great weekly and monthly markets.
The nearby 'Lac Mondon' is within walking distance, and the open air swimming pool is lovely - modern and clean - but gentlemen - you do need to wear proper swimming trunks (shorts not allowed)
Depending on the timing of your visit, you will find local and national festivals going on all over the region (we provide a ''What's on'' report for our guests which is updated regularly).

"Gem of a find in Mailhac sur Benaize 87160"
What can I say about this qite. Except this is a gem of a find in a beautiful setting just behind a small church in a peaceful village close to St Sulpice and La Soutterraine. Gite has everything you need. so wel equiped is an understatement. Garden is beautiful with seclusion from the owners Linda and Sam's own house. Kitchen has full cooker, washine machine, fridge/freezer, kettle and everything else you could use. Has wifi which is included in the rental charges. One bedroom with a double bed, Fold up bed is also upstairs for extra quests. Large living / dining area decorated in typical french style. Power shower in bathroom, Quaint to say the least, pure Gem. Owners Linda and Sam are the most helpful of owners we have met, nothing is to difficult for them to help with and give advise on things to do and places to go. Linda is english but both her and sam speak both fluent french. Value for money in every way
Thank you guys for such lovely comments, which are very much appreciated.

"lovely cozy cottage, everything provided, good central location."
We spent a week in the cottage, it was very comfortable and warm, with all you needed in the cupboards. The central location enabled us to adventure far and wide each day, so we covered a lot of the area, and it was great to come back to the cottage, turn on the English tv, and prepare for the next day. Our hosts were lovely, Linda gave us hints on where to see, and we enjoyed them all. I would certainly recommend this cottage to others, it is ideal for 2, but there is a sofa bed for another 2 if needed. Parking outside your door is another benefit, much appreciated. Totally enjoyed our stay.
We are so glad you both enjoyed your stay in our little corner of the Limousin. It was lovely to meet you, and thank you so much for your kind comments.

"The perfect break"
This charming cottage is by far the best accommodation we have been in by some margin. Meticulously clean, spacious and well furnished with all the facilities needed for catering. It is ideal for journeying about on day trips as it is close to the A20 motorway and within easy reach of some lovely towns via country roads should you wish to take in the scenery. My wife was very impressed with the cottage and we will be going again if they are not booked up. I would recommend this to anybody for short or long holidays. Brilliant.
Thank you for such lovely remarks and we are very pleased that you both enjoyed your stay.
