The Berkshire region

The Apartment is in close proximity to the theatres, museums and luxury shopping of London, as well as famous towns such as Windsor, Ascot, Henley and Oxford, while the Cotswolds are a day-trip away. Sights such as Stone Henge and Salisbury Cathedral can also be seen in a day's touring. The advantage of this region is that it combines beautiful lush countryside with a huge number of attractions that are relatively close together - historic buildings, stately homes with landscaped gardens, pubs and churches scarcely changed in centuries, riverbank walks, ancient beech forests, and in the summer, many traditional festivals and special music and sporting events. England is blessed with an incredible network of signposted footpaths that allow you to roam the countryside in every direction.

We are in a prime location for getting anywhere in the country - in easy reach of major airports (Heathrow is 20 km away, Gatwick and Luton are an hour's drive). Windsor is 10 minutes away. London is an hour by car, 40 minutes by train, while fast commuter trains take 25 minutes. Oxford is 40 minutes by car. The Cotswolds and Stratford-upon-Avon can be reached with ease in an hour and a half. Motorways nearby head North (M40 & M1) and West (M4), and the M25 skirts London, linking with motorways South and East. The beautiful Dorset coast and places like Lyme Regis, famed for its fossils, are a few hours drive away along beautiful country roads.

Maidenhead Riverside

The Apartment is located in Maidenhead's very beautiful Riverside Area, near the famous Boulter's Lock where you can sit and eat ice cream and watch the lock fill and empty while vessels make their way up or downstream. There's a lot of wildlife on the river, many peaceful places to sit and watch the swans, ducks, coots, grebes, cormorants, herons and kingfishers. A short walk downstream is Brunel's famous railway bridge built in 1838 and revolutionary in its day. You can cycle along riverside paths to Windsor and see the Castle, parts of which date from the 11th century, with its Gothic chapel, the incredible Doll's House, and the State Apartments filled with great works of art. You can go horse riding through Windsor Great Park and see the Queen's deer grazing amid thousand year old oaks.

The neighbouring village of Bray has two world-famous restaurants, and there are other lovely pubs and restaurants in Maidenhead and nearby Cookham. The supermarkets are good quality, and there is also a French and a fabulously stocked Italian delicatessen in town.

For entertainment there is local multiplex cinema and an art house cinema, and there is a theatre in Windsor with shows all year round. Across the river bank, the early 19th century mansion Cliveden, now a luxury hotel, has tours of its lavish interiors, and you can walk through the landscaped gardens and woodlands designed by Capability Brown. Boats are available to hire locally, and there are regular tour boats running between Maidenhead and Windsor all summer long.
