Location description from manager

The Lake Maggiore region

Lake Maggiore:

Lake Maggiore is 54 km long, with a coastline of over 150km and at its widest is 12 km. Like all the other Northern Italian lakes it is a deep glacial basin fed by rivers; Verzasca, Giona, and Cannobino flow into the lake. Its major outlet is the Ticino which, in turn, joins the river Po just south-east of Pavia.

Piedmont and Lombardy are two major regions surrounding the Lake but the most northerly section of Lake Maggiore extends a dozen kilometres into Switzerland, the lowest point above sea-level in Switzerland.

The climate as with all these protected lakes is mild in both summer and winter, producing lush vegetation, with beautifully planted gardens in wonderful villas growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Isola Madre, Isola Bella and the Isole di Brissago, that of the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa. These lakes are almost like a lost world. They also have their monsters apparently!

Maccagno

The well-serviced town also offers a bus service, a main lake road and a hydrofoil stop. Visitors can easily get about and explore the resorts of Stresa, Ascona, Locarno and Pallanza as well as the beautiful Borromean Islands and a host of activities including water sports, hiking, golf, skiing and extreme sports.

Maccagno:
This beautiful resort town enjoys a lovely lakefront position along the northerly eastern shore of Lake Maggiore and retains an ancient and noble history, once being known as a skilled craft and fishing village under the Mandelli Counts, before being granted freedom to become a free miniature state with its own mint for several centuries before the powerful Borromeo family took control.

Today its colourful past can be seen with the lower part of Maccagno noticeably more ancient then the modern upper part of the town, with medieval passageways, noble townhouses, an imperial watch tower and the sanctuary of 'Madonna della Punta'.

Visitors can enjoy the many pizzerias and fine restaurants, its lakefront promenade which leads to a modern art museum, a forest, play area and beach. For swimmers the Lidos of nearby Locarno and Ascona are recommended. Carnival festivities also feature during the summer months and play up to the town's famous culinary expertise with the famous 'Rice and Sausage' festival.

Maccagno offers a wide choice of sporting activities including tennis, hiking, mountain biking, volleyball, rock climbing, scuba diving and sailing. For golfers there is a choice of 6 golf courses in a 40 km radius of the town.

A frequent ferry service also operates from the town taking visitors to the beautiful towns of Cannobio, Stresa and to the incredible and elegant gardens found on the Bromero Islands.

From the town and just 7 minutes drive away, visitors can also take the mainline train from Luino to explore the local area. The bustling town of Luino also offers a wide choice of supermarkets, shops and amenities as well as boasting the largest weekly market in Europe!

The cosmopolitan Swiss city of Lugano makes for an enjoyable day trip and is conveniently located just 40 minutes drive away. Lugano boasts many fine boutique designer shopping boulevards and antique and fine art shops as well as many lovely cafés and fine restaurants which line the elegant piazzas. The nightlife is also buzzing with fantastic bars, a choice of nightclubs and modern casinos.

Lake Maggiore is also within easy reach of neighbouring Lake Como. The smaller and extremely beautiful lake is just a 65 minutes drive away and offers many pretty villages and villas to explore.

For winter sports the Ski resorts of Alpe Forcora, Andermatt and St Berradino are ideally situated 1 hours drive away.

Milan Malpensa airport is also easily accessible from Maccagno, being just an 80minute drive away and an inexpensive train service operates from Milan Central Station to nearby Luino and taking between 1-2 hours.

(The lovely lakefront town of Maccagno is fully-serviced with amenities and activities, to offer a wonderful setting in which family and friends can savour the freedom of self-catering stay. A selection of grocery shops features alongside an array of cafes, authentic restaurants and the welcoming allure of an ice cream parlour.

Alongside its 'amenity appeal', Maccagno also offers a children's park, volleyball and football courts, sailing facilities and an art museum and music hall.

A frequent bus and hydrofoil service also enables guests to easily explore the famous sights of Lake Maggiore, including the spectacular Isola Bella Gardens and the resorts of Stresa, Ascona, Locarno and Pallanza.
The surrounding Maccagno area is also a mecca for water sports, boat rental, cycling, tennis, golf, horse riding, skiing and extreme sports.)

Additional Sports & Adventure Activities include:
Bike Rentals, Boat Rentals/Charters, Canoeing/Kayaking, Float Plane/Helicopter, Funicular Railway, Markets, National Parks, Public Transportation, Public Villas & Gardens, Rowing Boats and Wine Tours.

Golf:
Golf Club Lugano, Via Boett, CH-6983, Magliaso.

Lugano Golf Club - the oldest club of Italian Switzerland.
The club was founded in 1923 and represents a miracle of golfing architecture.
Over the years, several changes have been made until the decision to adopt a master plan in 1992, the implementation of which continues in stages, with the aim of making the route increasingly attractive and meets the needs of today's golfers, whether they are experts or beginners.
Located 10 minutes from the city of Lugano, the economic-financial and tourist center of national and international significance, it is easily accessible being on the cross of North-South transit connecting the north of the Alps to Italy.

The Golf Club Lugano is a must for all golfers who want variety of routes, nature and picturesque landscape and warm welcome to the Club House.
All our staff are on hand to make you enjoy your visit.

Skiing:
Skiing: Splugen or the Mottarone Ski Resort, Stresa:
