Location description from owner

The Tangier-Tetouan Region

Closest airports are Tangiers, Tetouan - both local moroccan. If you wish to fly to Gibraltar or Malaga, you will need to take a ferry across the channel and then either get a cab or hire a car. Ports on European side are Algeciras, Tarifa and Gibraltar. On the African side, choose between Ceuta (Spanish province) and Tangiers. AND WHAT TO DO HERE? Apart from lying on the beach and sunbathing, you can do various things to keep busy. There are few places on the beach that offer water sports, e.g. speed boat rental. If you like to hike, you can walk along the beach promenade and follow the coast all the way to Ceuta in nearby Spain. Marina Smir, an exclusive port which offers scuba diving, boating and fishing is just 10 minutes walk along the promenade and also has bars and restaurants.Visiting towns and citiesIf you want to explore more of Moroccan's more traditional culture we suggest the following: Fnideq and M'Diq (both 10 mins drive) are small towns with few little shops and markets but with plenty of cafes and restaurants. Tetuan (Tetouan) is the biggest city in the area and is also called "La Blanca Paloma" (White Dove), thanks to its white houses. Visit the narrow streets, some of the mosques, local artists' workshops (where you can get real bargains). There is always something to do or see in Tetouan. Chauen (Chefchaouen) is one of the prettiest towns in Morocco with traditional blue houses. It is about 90 mins drive. Shopping Food Smaller basic shop is about 5mins drive towards Alcudia Smir. Big and relatively cheap supermarket is in Tetouan and is called Marjan. Depends what you decide to buy - local food is cheap, imported food is very expensive (e.g. 1kg of olives is about €1.50, pack of French biscuits is about €3). Sea food and fish are cheap, be aware of different hygienic standards in supermarkets. Also, if you want to take home some spices, you will find those big buckets even in the supermarket.Souvenirs shopping Best done in M'diq or Tetouan. Things are reasonably priced (table runner about 8€, very large throw about 30€, locally made leather handbags and shoes cost between 10-30€ and will do as very nice presents. Eating Out There are plenty of restaurants in M'diq or Tetouan. Try the Tagine dishes, seafood, fish or Kafta (Meatballs). Prices are anything between 4€-10€ per dish. Please note that only a few restaurants are licensed to sell alcohol, so you might only be able to get water or tea with your meal.Attractions in the Area Port Marina Smir Scuba Diving, boating and fishing from Marina Smir Horse Riding at Cabo Negro (10 min drive) Golf - Royal Golf, Cabo Negro (10 min drive) Smir Aqua Park, Sania Beach (5 min drive) Waterpark - Nr Tangiers (45 min drive)
