The Sardinia region
Northwest Sardinia is a land of wild, dense green maquis interspersed with wind blown rocks and some of the finest beaches on the island. The region of Alghero has remained largely unspoilt and is recognised for its charming seaside resorts, archaeological sites and, above all, its spectacular coastline. Alghero itself boasts a fascinating Old Town which has retained its Catalan favours and tends to be rather crowded in the height of the summer season, mostly by young people.
Near Alghero (50Km.) there is Stintino, an ancient fishing village with restaurants, pubs and discos, and ‘ La Pelosa’ , one of the most stunning beaches nearby. La Pelosa beach is one of Sardinia's famous swimming spots, lapped by shallow, turquoise sea of crystalline clarity. Some say it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world! Le Prigionette Nature Reserve at Porto Conte is a great spot for hiking and cycling through the mountains and valleys.
Near Alghero you can visit ‘Capo Caccia’ with the ‘Grotte di Nettuno’ that is one of Sardinia's most visited tourist attractions: it consists of 60 million years old caves discovered by fishermen in the 18th century and that you can visit by boat or if you wish by 700 stairs!
Alghero is even for a weekend! Visitors to the city find that the area around Alghero gives a lot of opportunities for day trips: the famous cave complex of ‘Grotte di Nettuno’ (Neptune's Grotto), located 15km to the west on the peninsular of ‘Capo Caccia’, is one of the most spectacular cave complexes in Italy and a very popular tour destination.
To the north and south of Alghero the resorts of Bosa and Stintino are worthy of investigation. Slightly inland, Bosa boasts a compact centre of narrow streets and a relaxed atmosphere whilst its extension at Bosa Marina, 3 km away, provides access to the beach. The smaller Stintino on the northwestern tip of the Island is renowned for the stunning coastline at La Pelosa with its superb beaches and calm turquoise waters.
The area around Alghero also contains several important archaeological sites. Nuraghe di Palmavera is the best preserved nuraghic complex in the region and the older Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero airport (Fertilia), is a necropolis consisting of around forty burial chambers.
Located on the northwest coast of Sardinia, Alghero has become a major holiday destination in recent years and yet still retains its distinctive Catalan character. This derives from the influence of Pedro IV of Aragon who seized control of the town in the mid-fourteenth century and embarked on an intense period of colonization from Spain.
In winter the climate is very warm so the walk on the old walls of the old city with some very nice cafes and restaurants (ranges from young to older generations).
The most famous beaches that you have to see near Alghero are ‘Le Bombarde’, that It's a really nice sand beach and its sea water is just crystal-clear at all! It is the beach for young people (20 - 30 years old) who usually go there in the afternoon after nightlife. There are the ‘Lazzareto’, ‘La Speranza’, ‘Maria Pia’.

"Very helpful owners helped us get our holiday off to a great start"
This apartment is near the centre of town, close to the beach and the shops, and is clean, secure and very well equipped. However, it was the welcome we received on arrival that really made the difference. After the usual holiday stresses of delayed arrivals and queues at hire car desks, we arrived in Alghero a lot later than expected. Then we were directed through the town to the apartment on the phone, met at the door, shown around and moved in before we knew it. This was a great way to start our holiday.

"Fabulous spacious apartment"
I stayed in this apartment with my husband and 2 small children. We had our baby in our room in a cot provided by the owners and our other child slept in his own room which has bunk beds. The apartment doesn't seem that big initially; 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and small kitchen/living, however the balcony runs the complete width of the apartment and it's like a large sitting/dining/utility room! It is fabulous and we had our breakfast out there every morning. The owners were most helpful with any questions we had and made sure that we had everything we needed. Also they met us at the apartment with the key so we had no trouble getting in. The location of the apartment is fine if you don't mind not being near Lido. Lido has a long sandy beach but we just went there once. There is a cove with a beach 5 mins walk from the apartment which we actually liked, the sandy is more stony but it was so hot we never stayed too long anyway, just went for swims so sunbathing wasn't too important to us. There is a supermarket just 2 mins away. We walked into the old town each day which took about 10 mins and there was a park with playground also about 10 mins away. Personally we really enjoyed our visit very much and it suited our needs perfectly.
