Description from owner

Stylish contemporary apartment superbly located within historic city walls. The apartment is fully air-conditioned to keep you cool in the hot Tuscan summers. And with underfloor heating, double glazing and the benefit of the latest energy efficiency building standards, it will also keep you snug and warm in the cold Tuscan winters. Whatever the season this apartment will give you a feeling of comfort and wellbeing.

The apartment is flooded with natural sunlight from large floor-to-ceiling french windows in all the main rooms with views over the rooftops and gardens of a small monastery with the hills in the distance. These uninterrupted views are extremely rare within the 'centro storico' where the narrow medieval streets mean that a lot of apartments can be quite dark, draughty and cold in winter, and hot and stuffy in summer.

The excellent acoustic insulation between the floors of the building further guarantee your holiday will be a restful one and completely free of disturbance.

The Tuscany region

Tuscany is famous throughout the world for its beautiful landscapes, its wine and food and its art and culture in the historic towns and villages across the region. It's all very accessible from Lucca. Direct trains and buses take you into the heart of Florence in 1 hour 15 mins or drive along the autostrada in less than an hour. Pisa is less than 30 minutes drive by car or 40 minutes by bus or train.

Lucca Historical Center

Lucca is a beautiful Tuscan town whose historic centre is uniquely encircled by its 16th century walls - no other city in Italy or Europe has anything like it. These ancient city ramparts, 5 kms in circumference, today form a wide walkway on top of the walls, shaded by large chestnut tress where you can walk, jog or cycle.

The city is surrounded by hills which are famous for their historic villas, many of them open to the public and within cycling distance of the city. There are numerous places to sample the local wines and olive oil along the 'The roads of wine and olive oil' (Le strade del vino e del olio) that wind their way through the local countryside of vineyards and olive groves.

Travel a bit further out (half an hour from the city) and you will find yourself at the Versilia - an endless stretch of beach where you can eat wonderful seafood spaghetti in Viareggio all year round, go clubbing in some of Italy's best known nightclubs, or simply, for a six months a year, lie on the beach, go for a swim and get some sun. If you're looking for something more active, then go walking and hiking in the beautiful hills around the city - a 30 minute drive will take you further up into mountains which range up to nearly 2000 metres high. An hour's drive away and you can go skiing in Abetone from December to March.

Lucca is a wealthy town with a strong sense of its traditions and independence of spirit, the city provides a diverse programme of contemporary and classical culture yet far less touristy than Florence , Sienna or Pisa. It is sufficiently off the beaten track to have kept its character and authenticity - a 'best-kept secret', yet only 30 minutes from Pisa airport.

This small, compact city of of 80,000 people means its very easy to really get to know and the best way of getting around is on foot or by bike. You will be delighted by some of Italy's finest medieval and renaissance architecture, local family-run restaurants serving typical Tuscan dishes, and being the home of Puccini you can enjoy all year music festivals, concerts and recitals. In summer the city also moves to another beat with the Lucca Summer Festival with stars such as Elton John, Moby, Anastasia descending on the city.

The all-year round programme of open-air events range from the ice rink and christmas market in December, wine tasting and food festivals for the month of September , and every month the city hosts the second largest antique market in Tuscany that takes over the streets and piazzas of the old town with furniture and bric-a-brac stalls. Combine this with the late night openings of the Contemporary Art Gallery, the nightclubs and inimitable Italian beach culture on the coast 20 minutes away, skiing one hour away and you have the ingredients for a holiday to suit all ages and tastes.

“An Excellent Base”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2015

My wife and I stayed for 9 nights in this splendidly appointed apartment and wished we could have stayed for longer. The owner, Martin, was very helpful in sending us detailed info as to the location of the apartment and how to access it. As he works in the UK, he was unable to greet us himself but arranged for some friends, who lived in the same building, to meet us and show us around. They were so welcoming, showed us the apart and then took us to their own apartment for drinks and nibbles. They even took us to the nearest supermarket so we could stock up on provisions. As Martin wanted to give his friends a fairly accurate time of arrival, he suggested that we got a Taxi from Pisa airport and he arranged this transfer for us. We were planning to use either the bus or train for the transfer but as the apartment was tucked away in a very quiet part of the old city, we would have struggled to find it so the taxi was definitely a sensible suggestion and well worth the 55 euros. We did use the train for our return, however, and it was very straightforward and, of course, much cheaper. The apartment itself was beautifully clean, spacious, secure and very well equipped with all modern amenities including washing machine and dishwasher . The living area was a pleasant space to relax after the heat of the city and all the rooms have air conditioning. There is a large screen TV which we didn't use as it only seems to have Italian channels, and DVD player etc. There was a useful library of travel info relating to Tuscany and a good selection of games to play for those with children. The apartment is probably ideal for a couple but as there is a sofa bed in the living area it could accommodate more at a pinch. The bed in the main bedroom is large and very comfortable. The bathroom is especially spacious and has a large bath, two showers, bidet, w.c etc. We found the location ideal as the apartment is situated in a modern block close to the city walls and yet only 15 mins to the city centre. We walked everywhere and frequently accessed the walls which provide lovely views of the old city and the mountains beyond. There is usually a refreshing breeze up there too. There is a good selection of shops and restaurants close at hand. (Our recommendation for a cracking meal: check out Pasqualies on Via del Moro off san Giorgio) Public transport is excellent and makes trips to places like Florence, Viareggio , Barga a breeze. We will certainly return to Lucca as we have so much more to explore and would definitely stay in the same apartment unless we travelled with friends when we may look for something larger.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed and positive review - very much appreciated. Look forward to the next visit!

“Historical Lucca with all the comforts of home”

Reviewed 24 Oct 2012

I spent 4 wonderful weeks in Lucca, in this apartment. The owners, Manuela and Martin, were welcoming and helpful. The apartment is clean, comfortable and had everthing I needed. The location, just inside the old walls but away from the tourist heart, meant it was light, airy and quiet. The view from the windows was special; across roof tops to the trees on the wall with the mountains in the distance. What a joy - no matter what time of day or weather. In front of the building is a large, grassed open area which is great for catching some sun while reading a book. Everything is close by including several restaurants, deli's, a local bar and a gelateria. This is a modern building which suited me perfectly - I could enjoy heritage Lucca during the day but retire to modern comforts at night.

“modern comfort in the mediaeval city”

Reviewed 22 Jul 2012

The owners could not have been more helpful and welcoming. The apartment is is in a good location for exploring the fascinating city, well equipped, and with underground, secure car parking, with a lift to the apartment, make it ideal for anyone with problems with stairs! The air-conditioning too was very welcome, as this was a particularly hot week even for Lucca in July.

“Lucca: La Dolce Vita”

Reviewed 5 Jul 2012

For those who haven’t been to Lucca, I can assure you that it’s Tuscany’s best kept secret, a medieval town about the size of Bath or Chester (though slightly smaller than Pisa) but with a style all of its own. With its huge ancient walls, its towers, squares and churches, and with its myriad of bars and great places to eat, the town has something for everyone. Whilst there are a few hotels and a number of private apartments within the town walls, many are noisy, difficult to reach or without parking. Fortunately, the apartment offered by Martin & Manuela satisfies every need. Located within a smart, modern, newly-constructed private complex the apartment is light and airy and beautifully appointed with everything one could possibly want for a comfortable holiday, including a washing machine, dishwasher, a modern, spacious bathroom with shower, and excellent air-conditioning. It has an underground car park (a unique feature for a building within the walls I believe), electronic gates, adjacent gardens and is no more than a ten minute walk from the centre. Most of all it’s quiet as the east side of town benefits from a total absence of crowds and bustle and usually all that one hears on waking up each morning in the apartment is birdsong. The complex is easily accessed by car via Porta Elisa, which in turn is easily accessed from the motorway and whilst perfect for a week in town the apartment is also ideal as a base to explore the coast and the surrounding area. The huge choice of fabulous restaurants, trattorias and bars within easy walking distance are too numerous to detail here, however I would mention a Gastronomia (a delicatessen) called ‘Da Ponte A Quarto’, at 24 Via Michele Rosi, on the route between the apartment and the centre, absolutely perfect as a source of great food should you feel the need for a quiet night in during the week in order to drink all the wine you’ve accumulated! Once again Martin & Manuela have provided everything within the apartment that you might need should you wish to prepare your own feast, to the extent of sets of both champagne and large wine glasses! Martin and Manuela were always concerned to ensure that we enjoyed our holidays on both of the occasions that we’ve stayed at their apartment. They are the perfect hosts; cultured, friendly and generous and always available to provide, information, advice and assistance whenever it was needed. I strongly recommend their apartment to anyone wishing to book a holiday in Lucca.

“Great apartment in perfect location”

Reviewed 26 May 2012

The apartment is light and modern and in a perfect location within Lucca's city walls. We stayed for five nights and could have stayed longer. Lucca is a great base for visiting Florence and Pisa but is also a lovely city in its own right. Manuela was friendly and very helpful both before and during our stay. Highly recommended.

“Beautiful modern air conditioned apartment within the ancient city walls of Lucca”

Reviewed 19 May 2012

We visited Lucca for the first time last summer, we had a fantastic holiday! The apartment is modern, very well equiped and presented beautifully, with lovely views looking over the rooftops and gardens. Also in an ideal position, within the ancient city walls making it easy to walk to the local shops, bars and restaurants. The owners could not have been more friendly and helpful as well as offering tips on local amenities, all in all a great holiday and heartily recommended.
