Location description from owner

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines region

Bequia is still the same as it has always been, incredibly friendly, unpretentious and quirky. The traditions of boat building, fishing and whaling endure and there is yet to be any sign of high rise hotels or commercial chains. A strong sailing culture exists in these islands with both the local and international scene, and most visitors still arrive and depart by sea.

Yachts from all over the world are routinely at anchor in the bay and at night their mast lights twinkle in the harbour adding to the atmosphere of the eclectic mix of bars and restaurants along the harbour walkway.

Days here can be relaxed or full of discovery and action. There are several beaches to explore and large areas of forested hills and valleys with trails that may lead to a deserted cove or cliff top. Sailing day trips to the pristine Tobago Cays or affluent Mustique and Canouan Islands are popular ways to pass the time.

Water taxis can be hired to take you to and from the harbour and the beaches, and diving is available at a choice of Dive schools. You can Windsurf in the safety of the wide harbour and there are some marvellous sites for snorkelling here and in the Grenadines. There is also the opportunity to take a Grenadine island cruise on a yacht, big game fishing or nature tours by boat.
Ferries ply their way back and forth to St Vincent, an hour away where a wealth of opportunity exists to explore Kingstown, a working Georgian town with lots of bustle, markets and local atmosphere. Walk up the Volcano or along the many trails, visit Montreal Gardens , or visit the wilder windward coast.

For such a small island there are a surprising and varied number of quirky restaurants and bars with marvellous seafood, live music and great atmosphere overlooking the the sea.

Lower Bay

Lower Bay is Bequia’s longest beach, this beach of golden sand is generous in width, and, since it is on the leeward side of the island, the water is usually calm and clear. There are a number of small restaurants nearby which can be convenient for taking a break from the sun. Close to the middle of this stretch of sand a small reef forms a natural pool – ideal for young paddlers. Lower bay is the host of the Bequia Blues music festival in January and some of the Easter Regatta races start from Lower Bay.

“We've searched through the Caibbean for just this place”

Reviewed 27 Dec 2012

Ravenala House on Bequia was everything we'd hope it would be. We were looking for a place to escape to during Christmas where we could kickback and relax, enjoy family time and experience the Caribbean without large resorts.  The house is perched on a hillside with an amazing view of the harbour and the small town of Port Elizabeth. We spent many hours on the covered deck relaxing, reading and enjoying the cool breezes. In addition to the covered deck there's a pool deck with direct sunlight - enough that the "teenager" could sunbathe between cooling plunges in the pool. The infinity pool is "sublime". It offers a tree top view out over the Caribbean to St. Vincent in the distance.  From your perch (they've thought of everything including built-in seats in the pool) you can watch the lights of the yachts and sailboats come on as day turns to night.  We're very picky about our surroundings and it's nothing for us to find the perfect location and price and then disregard the house because of some overblown heavy handed Caribbean Mama decorating. Ravenala House  is out of a home decorating magazine. Bill and Anne have taken the time to gentrify the house and create a vacation home that is relaxed, stylish and easy on your eyes. Cool white and blues combined with touches of dark teak and a hint of Caribbean pattern make this the perfect setting to relax in and ease your senses.  The kitchen is well stocked, there's a propane barbecue on the deck and the beds are comfortable with good quality linens. Unexpected extras were the screens on all of the windows and doors which made for mosquito free sleeping and the fruit trees in the garden. There's ample space to hang and store all your "stuff" and nice little touches like bath soaps, games and books.  Every bedroom comes with its own bathroom and they are amazing. Decorated in coral and pebble-stone tile they are simple, beautiful and functional. If you're lucky and get the room on the main floor the shower windows open up to offer a view of the harbour so you can enjoy the view while under the rain-head shower. We've been to the Four Seasons in the Maldives with incredible outdoor showers and this one is comparable.  So there are a few negatives (we say negative loosely because they're really small inconveniences to overcome!) There's no dishwasher and the road up from town will challenge your skills the first time. Be patient and you'll get the hang of the local road which is made easier by the good quality small SUV that comes with the house. There's no direct beach access but a 5 minute walk down the hill will get you to Lower Bay where there's beautiful Caribbean sand and wonderful snorkeling.  Getting to Bequia can be a challenge (as we discovered) with your best bet being to fly into Barbados, hop over to St, Vincent on Liat, stay the night if your flight is late and take the 45 minute ferry ride the next morning. The ferry will set the pace for the slow life you're going to experience on Bequia. If you're lucky (like we were) Tim will meet you at the dock, help you to provision and then take you up to the house.
