Location description from owner
The Andalucia region
This bit of coast is called the "tropical Coast" for a very good reason. The winters are the mildest in main land Europe and the summers are not as hot as other Andalusian parts. The fertile valleys of the area grow Papayas, avocados, custard apples, medlars, etc.
The Tropical coast is sandwiched between the Sierra Nevada to the North (3,450 meters high) and the Med and Africa to the South. Because of this, it has a very special climate.
This coast has more than 320 sunny days a year and an average temperature of 20. The Costa Tropical translates as a heavenly place. Its extensive beaches, with clear blue waters, have been repeatedly awarded the exclusive eco-label Blue Flag. These beaches draw thousands of both Spanish and foreign visitors. However, this area does not suffer the problems affecting other regions and it remains very Spanish.
The tourism boom that took place in Spain during the 60s and 70s arrived late to the Costa Tropical and that is why it has successfully kept away from becoming a grey urbanized and tourist-stricken land mass like other parts of Spain.
Almunecar is only 1 hour and 15 minutes away (by car) from Sierra Nevada. The ski season in Sierra Nevada runs from late November/early December to after Easter and it has been known to remain open into May when the snow has allowed it. Sierra Nevada is the most southerly ski resort in Europe and unbeliebably, it has fantastic snow for 3 months of the year. The highest slope goes almost to the very top of the mountain at 3,400 meters. One can easily ski in the morning and swin in the sea in the afternoon. From the top of Sierra Nevada, Africa is clearly visible on a clear day.
The Coast around Almunecar has wide family beaches as well as many coves and dramatic cliffs. There are also various nudists beaches.
All sorts of sports are easily available in and around Almunecar. Scuba diving, golf, horse riding, paraglyding, moutain biking, road cycling, hiking, canyoning, walking, etc, etc. One can even do absolutely nothing and simply enjoy the nice coffee bars and restaurants that the area has to offer.
Almunecar is a busy town all year around.
Almunecar has a very long history which predates the Romans. This is reflected in its arquitecture and monuments. The Old town and its handsome Moorish castle sit on a small hill between the mouths of two rivers. Almunecar has managed to retain the atmosphere and character of an old Spanish town with winding narrow streets and tapas bars. Besides tourism, fishing and the growing of tropical fruits remain at the heart of the town's day to day life.
Almunecar's beaches have excellent facilities -pedalos, beach beds and parasols for hire, showers and toilets and life-guards in high season. The beach fronts are lined with typical Spanish restaurants and bars serving delicious seafood and tapas.
The town has a water park, bird park and botanical gardens.
There is an open air market every Friday selling Spanish leather goods and pottery as well as bargain clothing.
The first Saturday of each month is the craft and flea market.
Granada is the only province in Spain that will serve you a free Tapa with your drink. Have a couple of drinks and you will have had a free lunch! They do exist in Granada!
Malaga and Granada are only an hour away from Almunecar. There are many things to do and see in either of them. If you plan to visit the Alhambra, make sure you book in advance to avoid dissapointment.
Please ask me if you have a specific interest. There are too many things to do around here to cover them all.

“Great house, amazing views”
A spacious split level house with great outdoor space for admiring the spectacular views, having a bbq or just relaxing around the pool. The house was well equipped and comfortable, with most things you need for a successful holiday. The correspondence with the owner was easy and she was very helpful and responsive. The location is quiet and peaceful and some way from beach and centre of town so a car is definitely recommended to explore this interesting area. The town of Almunecar has a great local feel, especially the old town, drinks are cheap and good quality free tapas abound! All in a all a great holiday!
Owner's reply: Thank you very much for enjoying El Nido and Almunecar!! I hope you will come back!
“The Perfect escape and most wonderful views!”
El Nido was the perfect escape, in a peaceful location with the most amazing sea views from all over the house - we also had a week of full warm sunshine at the beginning of April! It is a lovely house, well equipped with a lovely little pool/ terrace area for sunbathing and looking out over the sea. We had our 2 year old son and the steps down to the pool were not an issue for him and it always felt safe. It is a very short drive (or walk) to the nearest beach and also Almunecar town. We did do the walk into town from the villa downhill which does not take too long, but it is steep coming back up (esp if you have a pram and shopping!) and not the sort of walk you would want to do every day, but there are plenty of taxis. I did a lot of running so enjoyed the hill to the villa, and the location being slightly away from the town adds the the peace and tranquility! Ana was so very very friendly and helpful from start to finish, easy to contact and made everything seamless. She even provided us with some shopping for when we arrived and some dairy free products requested for our son! We will definitely be back - thanks so much Ana! Will
Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your kind words. It was a real pleasure to meet you all. Please do come back. Lovely people like you are always welcome!! All the best for the summer, Ana
“Wonderful - we'll be back!”
My wife and I invited children and grandchildren to celebrate my wifes 60'th - and we had an absolutely wonderful week in this beautiful property. Arriving very late in the evening we were met by friendly and smiling people and a basket of fruit and wine. The house has all the functions of an excellent summer villa and works very well with all ages - but mind the stairs! We thank the owners for superb communication before and after our stay - and we hope very much to come back to El Nido one day.
Owner's reply: Thank you very much for enjoying our house. I look forward to welcoming you to El Nido again. All the best to you and your family. Ana
“Great property, fabulous views, fantastic holiday”
This property was exactly as advertised and was very well maintained. The views were stunning and we spent many idyllic evenings up on the top balcony. The pool and sun terrace was ideal for relaxing days in the sunshine. Our group was 5 adults and one child and the property was spacious enough that everyone could have their own privacy when needed and the property is not overlooked by any other. The hill is steep but it was easy to walk down into the town and get a taxi back up. Almunecar had a good daily food market and we made the most of the seafood on offer. Our visit coincided with the fiesta and the fireworks display on the final evening was excellent. The property had easy access to the N340 and E15, so day trips in to the Sierra Nevada, Malaga or just the large supermarkets in Nerja and Motril/Salobrena were quick and easy. All in all we had a fantastic holiday and look forward to the day when we can return to El Nido.
Owner's reply: I am very pleased you enjoyed El Nido and Almuñecar so much. A special thank you also for being such wonderful guests. I very much look forward to your next stay in El Nido. Thank you for leaving a review. All the best, Ana
“Idyllic way to spend the summer”
What an amazing holiday. The villa is stunning and well prepared for guests. Our party of 9 loved the space and the views were simply stunning. Ana was amaxzing with providing so much information both before and during our holiday. A very gracious host who was responsive and accommodating. We will definitely be back; one of the best breaks we've ever had. Throughly recommend.
Owner's reply: Thank you very much for reviewing El Nido. I am so happy you enjoyed it!! Thank you for being such great guests. I look forward to having you back. Enjoy the rest of the summer. All the best, Ana
“Peaceful location, very private pool - simply great views”
Well, we certainly picked a very hot week to stay (24th July to 1st August) - temperatures ranging from 32 to 42 degrees. The locals had been teling us that even they were finding the weather hot. Upon arrival at 10:15pm we were greeted by the villa owners housekeepers. First impressions were that the villa was lovely and clean - pool was also really clean. Within a few minutes we were all in the pool which felt as warm as a bath after that days fierce sun. That is pretty much how things remained through the week. The pool got a lot of use on and off when the sun wasn't too strong. The gardener turned up at regular intervals through the week and swept up the steps and terraces, watered the plants and cleaned the pool. The villa is a short (but steep) drive up from the beach, this is actually great because it sets it high up above the sea and surrounding villas to give really great privacy and views, you really feel tucked away. All of the local amenities are only 5 mins away including the local Lidl store if you need anything. We would always recommend a trip to the Auchan (Alcampo) Hypermarket in Motril (approx 12 mile drive east) as this has everything you could possibly need for your stay in the area and also a very impressive seafood selection if you are self catering (as we were). Almunecar sea-front is peppered with restaurants, bars and small mini-markets for those little convenient shopping trips and dining al-fresco. Our friends visited the aqua-tropic water park with their children and were impressed. If you want to travel further afield, we would recommend a drive through the Lecrin Valley up to the Alpujarras to Orgiva - the views on the drive are amazing and the people in Orgiva on the whole are really friendly and accomodating to the children. There are so many great places to visit around the area including old town Almunecar with its winding streets and boutiques to Torre del Mar with its lovely beaches on the N-340 between Almunecar and Malaga. The locals were really friendly in Almunecar and we ate at a lovely restaurant "Cafe Restaurant - La Tralla" on the Paseo Puerta del Mar close to the underground car park. One word of warning - this is traditional Spain so don't expect many people to speak English! With a bit of effort on your part you will be well looked after so try to learn a few words to help make your stay more pleasurable - I can only manage a handful of local words but it was enough to get by. It's worth mentioning that the downstairs portion of the villa (if you are renting all of the rooms) is connected to the main villa by external steps (not internally connected) which was no problem to us with hot dry weather being the order of the week. The garage at the top of the driveway has an electric opener with remote control which makes it easy to come and go from the villa without having to get in and out of the car. All in all we would thouroughly recommend the villa, the location and the host Ana Garcia who deserves a mention as she is very attentive and thoughtful to her guests despite living in the UK far away from the villa. She has good local connections and will try her best to help you should you need any assistance.
Owner's reply: Thank you very much for leaving a review about El Nido and Almunecar. I am certain future guests will find it very useful. Thank you also for your kind words about me. I just want to make sure that everyone enjoys El Nido as much as possible and I will do anything I can to help. Enjoy the rest of the summer and I hope to welcome you back some time in the future. All the best, Ana
“We would happily stay here again”
Travelled with grandchildren aged 2 and 4. They loved the pool. This property is on 4 levels - the pool at the lower level - perfect for us as at the end of the day when we eventually got the children out, they weren't tempted to go back in. The pool isn't very big but there is plenty of space around it and the steps going in we're great for the kids. The house was spotleesly clean and had everything you need for a family holiday. Great views from all the terraces and you are not overlooked at all. You do need a car because it's a very steep hill up to the house. Great ice cream shop down the road too.
Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your review. I will be very happy to have you at El Nido again any time. Enjoy the rest of the summer. All the best, Ana
“First time in Spain”
Excellent accommodation set out on two levels, plus pool level, we only used part of the top floor. Fully equipped kitchen if you don't want to eat out and plenty of space, good clean shower rooms with all that is needed to enjoy your stay The villa is quite high up with good views over the sea and east to Montral With three levels to sit at and enjoy the sun space is easily found here to relax Top veranda, large middle patio area and pool side all accessed by steps down the side of the villa Weather was just right for us not being overly hot at this time of year but with the pool you can cool down when needed. Pool area is nearly completely secluded allowing for complete relaxation but still with the view to the sea. A good place to come to if you are looking for a Spanish town with the local atmosphere, many restaurants and bars all providing good food especially fish dishes
Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your review. I hope you come back to Spain soon!! Have a great rest of the summer. All the best, Ana
“A piece of heaven !”
We have now been vacationing at El Nido several times and simply love the place. It is the place where our family loves to gather and relax . El Nido is a wonderful house with the most fantastic view. Nothing is better than sitting on the terrace in the morning with your morning coffee and watch the sun rise. What a relaxing feeling. You feel like you do not want to leave the house. Ana is a most wonderful host. She is offering the best service from the first e-mail you write to her until the end of your vacation and even is corresponding with you when back in your home country. We were always very well received by Ana’s contact in Almunecar who showed us the house and handed out the keys to the house upon arrival. Moreover whenever something is not functioning (which is very very seldom) Ana is answering e-mails instantly and following up on things. Last time we were at El Nido, there were some internet problems, and Ana was working on the issue instantly until the problem was solved. We could not have gotten any better service ! El Nido also has a perfect layout with 2 different levels, which gives privacy when travelling together with friends or family members. The pool is also a very nice place to gather. El Nido / Almunecar is also the perfect base for excursions in the Sierra Nevada’s, one hour drive to Malaga, hiking, mountain biking, there is a most beautiful cave nearby in Nerja etc… There is so much to do and see. Almunecar is the “real” Spain, it is a town where people life and work and not “only” set up for tourists. That’s what makes us come back to Almunecar and El Nido and makes Almunecar / El Nido so special for us. El Nido is not just a wonderful house, but a “home” with a spirit. That’s what’s making the difference compared to other vacation homes. We will be back !
Owner's reply: I am so happy that you enjoy El Nido so much! I consider myself very lucky that you found El Nido some years ago and come back to it every year. You are wonderful guests and really lovely people. I hope you will keep coming back for many years to come. You will always be most welcome. Thank you very much again for your kind words. All the best, Ana
“We keep on coming back which says it all - just perfect!”
A great location for a great family holiday with a selection of superb beeches and restaurants etc and when you get back to 'El Nido' it feels like home with the added benefit of a lovely pool and fab views. Also a great location for exploring the local mountains and cycling which we did for a few days!
Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your nice review. I am so pleased to have you coming back year after year and that you keep enjoying El Nido. We love Almunecar and its surroundings too. I hope to see you again next year! All the best, Ana
