Description

El Cobertizo is an amazing unique shabby chic farmhouse with a Moroccan influence offering total privacy, all day sun and al fresco dining with a roof top sea view. We are located just a twenty minute picturesque drive from the beach into the hills overlooking the lush tropical valley of Los Banuelos once favoured by the Phoenicians. Quiet, peaceful and totally private this is the 'stuff of dreams', the 'real Spain' where the sound of goats' bells still tinkle over the hills. It is easily accessible to La Herradura, Salobrena, Nerja, Malaga and Marbella or a visit to Granada, the Alhambra and local markets for bargain hunting, Otivar water falls, day sailing from Marina del Este and many excellent restaurants for eating out. The villa benefits from its own private 10.5 meter pool. Four rooms all on one level have access to the spacious terraces and pool with stunning mountain views. Location description from owner

The Andalucia region

Granada! What a fantastic vibrant university city - home of the 'eighth wonder of the world' the Alhambra Palace and close to the Sierra Nevada mountain range (beautiful in summer too) and of course the region of mountain villages known as Las Alpujarras, famous for their unique mini-ecology, clinging to the southern flanks with deep, sheltered tropical valleys and gorges which run down towards the Mediterranean. Less than an hour's drive and you reach the old fishing port of Motril on the Costa Tropical. (There is stunning country route taking you instead through Otivar with her waterfalls and through the village of Jete to Almunecar, Marina del Este and La Herradura (horseshoe bay) on the coast) - just 15 minutes from Nerja and an hour and a half from Marbella!

Los Banuelos

Los Banuelos is a 20 minute breathtakingly beautiful drive into the hills and mountains behind Almunecar town where there is truly something for everyone - restaurants, shops, a picturesque marina, sailing and watersports, hang gliding, golf, horse riding, mountain biking, climbing, trekking, a bird park and much more. Many historical sites, art galleries, local artisans' exhibits and cultural venues including a Roman fort, aquaducts, Phonecian fish farms, caves and museums. The Costa Tropical has 19km of coastline and over 20 beaches; some are hidden coves, some designated for naturists, many have plenty of beach side cafes and restaurants with lively tapas bars and night life. Enjoy real Flamenco in authentic surroundings or just relax. Almunecar is a 50 minute easy drive from Malaga or Granada airport. Our house in the mountains is totally private but not isolated. We are surrounded by olive groves, mangoes, lemons and avocados - in these tough economic and difficult times the Spanish are returning to their roots - happy industrious families farming their land, re-terracing their hills with the sound of singing and laughter reverberating - especially at weekends when they visit their cortijos.

“Peaceful Paradise”

Reviewed 30 Oct 2015

My husband and I wanted to find somewhere that was far away from a town for privacy and peace. But we also wanted to be close enough to the shops and supermarkets and the beach. So this place felt like the perfect location for that since it took around 15-20 minutes drive down into the town called Almunecar, a beautiful town located on the beach. The house is big. However it still felt cozy with just the two of us there. We loved the design of the property and took advantage of the swimming pool and outdoor lounge. Every morning we went for walks up into the hills and the views were spectacular. We both enjoyed the feeling of being alone at the top of a hill overlooking the Spanish mountains watching the sun set over the mountains with a glass of wine... Special memories. Great place for a couple or a family who want to spend quality time together without too many distractions.

Thank you so much for your review - we are so happy that you enjoyed your stay. As you say the house is very flexible - couples often book especially out of high season and find it very cosy. We hope to welcome you again in the future.

“Paradise is hard to find.”

Reviewed 20 Oct 2015

Sometimes it will be a road less travelled and rough and winding. This house is Paradise and actually only 20 minutes from town. Beautiful, peaceful, fabulous views. Lovely pool, everything you could want or need is there. Really well equipped kitchen, loads of character, masses of room. The outside space is enchanting, so many different areas and pretty plants. The owners had left a ridiculously generous welcome food and drink package, no need to shop for days! The communication with the owners was the most efficient and friendly that I have ever experienced with any previous rentals anywhere. We all loved it and really did not want to leave. One of the best things was the gorgeous live in cat, missed her very much when we got back. It took ages to break the spell of enchantment once back home. Unlike other holidays, we did not eat out a great deal, except to go to a great bar on the beach. It was so lovely at the house! A magical place, the owners have created a paradise!

Thank you so much for such a heart felt review! You were also the perfect guests and we very much look forward to welcoming you again next year.

“Natural Paradise from up high”

Reviewed 26 Aug 2015

My husband and I stayed at Paul and Harriet's home for roughly a month and a half until high season began. It was flat out incredible! Stunning scenery, fantastic accommodation and perfect location. The house and grounds themselves are so ingeniously designed that you feel alone in the sky gazing at the towering mountains and valleys below. The feeling that immediately hits you on opening the front door is quite difficult to put into words. Complete tranquility/ awe of beauty/ sweet relief. What these two have created here is a work of art. The house itself is incredibly comfortable- 4 bedrooms- essentially 2 suites and 2 bedrooms which are a little more basic- ie without balconies and scenic windows. Moorish style doors and windows, great layout, superb kitchen if you love to cook. Wifi works great, every appliance present and had no troubles at all. A lot of the charm here too is how thought out everything is- I don't think you could be missing anything at all. A large closet holds pool accessories like rafts and nerf guns, badminton rackets, extra bedding and even a pool table that you can mount on the dining table. The main town of Almunecar is actually a really nice place to spend time in. I personally dont enjoy the coast and it's overdevelopment very much- but this town has many charming old quarters worth exploring- and I was really pleasantly surprised. One note on the ride there: I have heard many people are wary of the ascent- which is about 20 minutes from downtown Almunecar. While it is a narrow winding road, the journey is quite beautiful, so take your time, relax and you'll get there fine. If you go to Granada City I recommend another route-1 hour- same time as the highway, you can take the winding road up through the national park over breathtaking moonscapes into the plateau to Granada. You can not go wrong with this place! Also- Tigger, the resident cat is a wonderful, warm little animal, whom I still miss very much!

“Tranquil, private, comfortable, well-stocked villa in beautiful location, with pool.”

Reviewed 9 Aug 2015

Our whole family from 9 year old, to older teens plus my partner and I loved this villa. Lots of space for everyone to have some privacy, great pool and fabulous location in the mountains. Surrounded by mango, almond and avocado trees. We loved lounging by the pool or in the kazbah, had lots of bbq's and ate outdoors on the terrace or roof terrace under clear skies with lots of stars. Loved Tiggy the very friendly cat. Car journey up there fine once you got used to it. Loved the nearby waterfalls at Otivar, and the Alhambra. Would definitely love to go again and explore more. Rene also great at managing the villa - not obtrusive but there if you need him.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to write a review - and such a good one too! it makes a huge difference to us to know that we have been successful if making your holiday a happy one. We very much hope to welcome you again. Kind regards Paul and Harriet

“Peace and tranquility, our own superb private island”

Reviewed 29 Dec 2014

We so enjoyed our stay up in the hills, what a wonderful place. The whole ambiance and character was so very different from our home in Sydney, Australia. A holiday of a difference and not to be missed. Local shops, restaurants and the beach are not far away. The Alhambra - a must visit, is about one + hour's drive. 1 1/2 hours to the snow fields, though we didn't do that trip. All in all a most enjoyable time and we look forward to a return visit one day. Paul and Harriet's hospitality, care and guidance were impeccable.

Wow R you certainly have a way with words!! Thank you so much for taking the trouble to write them. For our part you were also wonderful tenants who really appreciated and took care of our home.....and Tigger!! I hope one day our paths cross again - all the very best Paul and Harriet

“A slice of heaven - gorgeous vistas and an amazing, unique home”

Reviewed 18 Jun 2014

Harriet and Paul's home was so perfect for our mini family reunion. Lovely variety of spaces, everything imaginable for cooking meals, and that view -- to die for! We so appreciated the welcome, and Harriet and Paul's help to get settled, including being met in town and guided up the winding road to the house. Experienced, confident driver is a must, especially if you have standard transmission. The pool is lovely, too, and we certainly used it when the days were hot. There is lots to do in the area -- the house and town were a great base for exploring, or just staying home and relaxing. The Wifi/cell service was sometimes iffy, but generally adequate. Tigger was also a charming housemate!

“A Little Bit of Paradise”

Reviewed 8 Dec 2013

We stayed for at this cortijo in November 2013 for just under a week. It is an amazing place, beautifully furnished and with the most stunning views! The owners left us with a great array of local produce including avocadoes, almonds and custard apples. Also firewood as the evenings did warrant a bit of heat! Daytime, it was shorts and t-shirt weather and we ate outside on numerous occasions. The cortijo is in the country and about a 15 minute drive to the nearest town of Almuñécar. Almuñécar has everything you need, restaurants, stores, theatre, historical sites and an old town that is well worth a visit. If you like walking, this is the place for you. The scenery is to die for and if you love peace and quiet, you will not want to leave, we didn’t!

“Heavenly”

What more can I add to the comments already made other than to try and describe the overall feeling of the house. El Cobertizo is not just a rental villa,it is a home. The walls breathe of the love and happiness this villa has known and it welcomes strangers like us with open arms, ensuring a happy relaxing reprieve from the real world. On a practical note the villa is very well equipt with everything you could possibly need to ensure a comfortable holiday. The welcome pack provided by Harriet and Paul is excellent, the best we have ever received in many years of renting. Internally the villa feels spacious with thought and flair given to the overall decor and emphasis on comfort. Huge comfy sofas and sky tv if you want to just relax a bit in the evenings. Externally stunning views with many different areas to relax away the day. The pool is a delight, not just one of those little splash pools but a very good size with room to do a few laps. There is also plenty of outdoor furniture and sunshades for the hottest parts of the day. If you do visit make sure you go out at night to look at the stars, on clear nights it's wonderful, With no light pollution you see so much more and can even see the Milky Way. The only sadness is leaving, although did I just hear the walls sigh 'a job well done' in response to our contented smiling faces as we leave. Harriet and Paul are the most amazing hosts we have ever come across, genuinely friendly and gracious and always at the end of the phone if you need them. Both Paul and myself wish you the very best for your upcoming adventures and thank you for such a wonderful holiday and such happy memories. Beverley and Paul

Wonderful house with geranium lined terraces, a sapphire pool, beautiful vistas and surrounded by hillsides with tropical fruit trees. A magical stay. A big thank you to Harriet and Paul. A truly stunning house in a beautiful part of Andalucia.

Thank you for taking the trouble to review El Cobertizo - we too really enjoyed meeting you all and a big thank you for taking such good care of our home!

We stayed here over Christmas with two young kids. The house was beautiful, the views spectacular, the stargazing amazing, and the location wonderful for relaxing or easy for many fascinating day trips. Harriet and Paul were excellent hosts - extremely friendly and helpful. Gave an insight into a side of Spain not otherwise easily available. Highly recommended for short or long stays!

Thank you for such a positive review - we really enjoyed spending some time with you and the girls - hope you had a great time in Barcellona on your route home.....all the very best Paul and Harriet
