A comfortable house in a beautiful location overlooking The River Border Esk and parkland, just half a mile from The Scottish Border. Standing next to a 15th century Peele tower, the property formed an old Border Riever's stronghold. Apart from the Tower (30 m away) the property is isolated from other houses. It is reached by a 400m privateTarmac drive and has plenty of room to park in the gravelled courtyard. It has a large garden which is largely lawn, sun loungers, garden furniture and barbecue. Zip and link beds mean that any combination of twin or doubles can be specified. The house has open fires and oil fired central heating. There is a pool table and a table tennis table. The kitchen is well equipped and has an oil fired Aga. There is a good modern electric cooker as a standby should your first Aga adventure be unsuccessful and all the appliances were new in August 2014.

The house is perfect place to relax with family and friends with lovely walks by the river and locally and plenty of space in the house.
Fishing can be arranged on the river in front of the house and further afield and a tennis court is available nearby. Bird watching is great locally with many different habitats from heather moorland to foreshore within 10 miles. Miles of uncrowded roads make bicycling enjoyable, bicycles can be hired in Longtown. There is a wide variety of Golf courses, with two wonderful championship links at Silloth and Southerness. Both about an hour away, but seriously worth the journey.

Visit Historic Carlisle, The Roman Wall, Gretna Green and The Scottish Borders. Being so close to the M6 and M74 means that further destinations can easily be reached. Ullswater can comfortably be reached in 40 minutes and Glasgow is just over an hour away.

Location description from owner

The England region

North Cumbria is a sparsely populated rural area with cattle and sheep far outnumbering the number of people who live here. Do not be surprised when walking that you do not see another soul. Lying between The Lake District to the South and The Cheviots to the North and sandwiched between The Solway to The West and The Pennines to The East, you do not have to travel far to get wonderful panoramic views. Whilst the Lake District and its obvious charms are half an hour away, there is plenty to see and do closer at hand. You are perfectly positioned to explore the Roman Wall, The Scottish Borders, The Solway Coast, The North Pennines and the local area itself.

Being in the North West of the country, we tend to get more than our fair share of rain but there is plenty of sunshine too. The mean temperature is usually 2 or 3 degrees cooler than in the South, but the air is very fresh and unpolluted.

Those seeking bright lights and gastronomic adventures should look elsewhere but we can offer peace and comfort in lovely surroundings. An ideal location for family and friends to get together for a special occasion or holiday.

Longtown

The immediate area had a turbulent past and was part of the Debateable lands between England and Scotland, an area where no law prevailed. The Border Rievers would lure their enemies into the area to murder them, knowing that they could not be prosecuted by English or Scottish Law. Happily that was a long time ago and you will find a peaceful parkland landscape with lovely old buildings. Kirkandrews Tower was built in the 15th Century to protect The Grahams from the maraudering Armstrongs, Scotts & Kerrs. Kirkandrews Church stands closeby. This was built in the late 18th Century as a copy of the English Church in Venice. Its rather austere classical design belies the ornate interior inside. Kirkandrews House is Listed Grade II and has been created from two cottages and a barn.

There are Lovely walks locally along the river and around the Estate. The North Solway Coast is very close as are the Cheviot Hills and a great variety of landscape and habitat is to be found nearby. Bicycling along uncrowded roads is possible once you get off the main A7. Bicycles can be hired in Longtown. Wildlife abounds and there are great local birdwatching sites.

The closest Shops are in Longtown, where all essentials can be purchased. There is a Spar, Filling Station, Chemist, Newsagent, Butcher and Greengrocer. In Carlisle there are a number of supermarkets including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury, Morrisons and Aldi. Asda and Tesco both deliver to the property. We even have a large retail outlet in Gretna for those who must have a retail fix!

The nearest pubs are in Canonbie and Longtown and there is a good restaurant at The Marchbank Hotel only half a mile North, on the Border. There are a number of takeaways in Longtown.

Details of all local attractions will be sent by email when bookings are made.

“Gorgeous house”

Reviewed 29 Jan 2017

Had a fabulous stay here with family. The house is gorgeous and very comfortable, and hiring a hot tub made it even better. There's plenty of space so even if there's a big group of you, you can still get away for a bit of quiet time. The only downside really was the internet as it didn't work at all. Would love to come back here in the future.

Owner's reply: The Internet is now more reliable but still pretty slow I'm afraid, we have done away with the satellite system and replaced it with a normal wired system with unlimited downloads. We are hoping for a significant improvement shortly. So pleased that you had a wonderful stay.
