The Puglia region
Puglia has something for everyone ..... For beach lovers there are miles of unspoilt coastline, from rocky coves for snorkelling to long stretches of white sand with crystalline water.
Foodies will enjoy the freshest fish and seafood, vegetables bursting with colour and flavour, local cheeses, fresh pasta and baked products and the incomparable local olive oil and excellent wine.
Natural beauty abounds, whether you are driving, walking or cycling through a landscape dotted with olive and fruit trees, divided by dry stone walls or admiring a crystalline turquoise sea from a cliff top vantage point, a a boat or a white sand beach. There are architectural gems as well, from the perfect, simple medieval chapel to the full blown Baroque cathedral.
The climate is temperate, lots of sunshine but usually with a breeze from the sea so that the heat is seldom oppressive. See www.welcometopuglia.it for pictures
San Marco with a village shop/bakery, little bar, post office, pharmacy is a short walk away. A good traditional restaurant is about 20 minutes walk.
Locorotondo - one of Italy's officially recognised most beautiful small towns is 5km away set up in the hills, overlooking the surrounding countryside and sea,. It is famous for its white wine, and the picturesque centro storico, or historic centre, has some excellent restaurants.
Cisternino, Martina Franca , Ostuni, Alberobello are also worth exploring as are the caves at Castellana, and the cave towns of Matera and Massafra about 45 min drive. For kids there is a Safari Park (Zoo Safari Fasano) and Theme Park (Fasanoland) about 15 minutes drive away and a big new Aquapark about 20 mins aqway. We supply notes on the area , restaurants , sights etc when you enquire.
A choice of beaches to suit all tastes is available within a fifteen to twenty minutes drive.
