Location description from owner
The Wales region
Vulcan Lodge - the Searle sits in the Upper Wye Valley which is designated an area of special interest and beauty. It is only 3.5 miles from the market town of Rhayader: the gateway to the Elan Valley. With its network of lakes and dams the Elan Valley is considered to be the Lake District of Wales.
The backdrop to the area is the Cambrian Mountain range which stretches from Rhayader to the coast in Ceredgion.
Rhayader is a vibrant town with much to offer the visitor. With its Leisure Centre, Elan Valley Visitor Centre, Museum, Community Arts Centre (CARAD) Willow Globe open air Shakespeare theatre and Red Kite Centre it is rich in culture and interest. Each year there are a number of local agricultural shows in the surrounding villages and Rhayader itself has a Grand Carnival week with events occurring on a nightly basis over a 10 day period. There is a programme of events at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre throughout the summer season and the Leisure Centre offers school holiday activities for children. There is a children's playbarn 3 miles from the cottage.
With a population of just over 2,000 Rhayader has a range of shops including a Spar store and chemist. It also has 12 pubs!
For walkers the Wye Valley Walk is just a 10 minute walk . The Red Kite Centre at Gigrin Farm where the wondrous raptors can be seen at close quarters at feedng time each day, is 3 miles away. For cyclists there are many cycle paths and trails, and in Rhayader there is a mountain bike centre which offers guided tours and bike hire. For canoe enthusiasts there is a canoe access point on the river nearby and there are many opportunities for fishing both on the Wye and Marteg rivers and at Llyn Gwyn pool owned by Rhayader Angling Association.

“Home from home break”
Been before easy to just move in, dogs and all enjoy the comfort & facilities on offer. Including the welcome Welsh Cakes & Wine ( good quality). The Red Kites are our favorite, trip, also saw a magnificent murmeration in Aberyswtyh. Weather it's February, still managed to enjoy the Wye Valley & Elan Visitor Centre in a snow flurry.
It was nice to welcome you back to stay with us. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay despite the February weather and thank you for your positive comments. Best wishes Elaine Owner
“luxury accommodation! worth every penny!”
booked Searle cottage for a romantic short break, dropped lucky in finding it as was difficult to book one-bedroomed self-catering accommodation of this quality! the cottage itself has been beautifully renovated and kept some great original features. Fittings and fixtures are of high quality (even having porcelain crockery!) and the cottage was spotlessly clean. Comfortable bed, storage space and plenty of garden were all worth having as well.. It was quiet and well located for some lovely walks and attractions (Elan Valley, Red Kite Feeding Station and Abbey Cwm Hir Mansion all well worth a visit) and the owner was friendly, helpful and was flexible with our booking arrangments having booked at very short notice we were lucky to stay!. Highly reccommend staying here and would definitely visit again!!!
Thank you very much for taking the time to post a review about the Searle Cottage. Thank you too for your very positive comments. The Searle is our most popular cottage and I think this is because - like you say - it is very spacious for a one bedroom unit. We do of course now have another spacious one bedroom cottage on the ground floor (the Tudor) which has been designed to accommodate guests with limited mobility and like the Searle it is becoming quite popular. Thank you again for your review.
“The cottage was comfortable with great attention to detail, loved it.”
The website is really accurate and easy to navigate. We loved our cottage it had everything needed for a relaxing break. The renovation was sympathetic and of a high standard, loved the original features . It was so convenient , the little shop was well supplied and the cafe comes highly recommended. The owner is so helpful whilst respecting our privacy. Amazing walks accessible from the cottage and so many stunning places a short drive away. This is an unspoilt part of Wales. We will certainly return. We were shown around all the properties and they where all of the same excellent standard. Along with the BandB rooms The Vulcan Inn is suitable for all. We have no hesitation in recommending this property.
Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review of the Searle cottage and for giving such positive feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Yes - there are some lovely walks and we are lucky to have them close by - especially the one to the rear which leads directly to the banks of the Wye. We very much look forward to seeing you again at some future date.
“First class accommodation”
We have previously stayed at the caravan site at Doldownlod and found it to be excellent. The Vulcan Lodges are equal to it.. We stayed in Searle Lodge with our dog. The owners have not pinched any pennies setting these lodges up. They are well appointed with modern facilities throughout, well maintained and spotlessly clean. We could not have been more comfortable. The site is convenient for a walk down the river with the dog (important and only 150 yards away!), fly fishing (more important!!) or just getting away from it all. Next door is a well stocked mini market and adjoining cafe, which does good simple food. Without doubt, the best self catering accommodation we have ever stayed in, and in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of Wales. We'll be going back!
Thank you very much for taking the time to review your stay in the Searle. We very much appreciate the positive comments you have made. Yes - we really are lucky to have the river so close by which is very useful for the early morning dog walk! I'm glad you felt the shop, post office and café nearby to be of benefit. Guests find it especially useful for their morning paper and odds and ends they may have forgotten to bring with them. We very much look forward to seeing you again some time in the future. Best wishes Elaine
“Relaxed walking holiday.”
We loved the quirkiness, of the Searle. We felt relaxed and it felt like a home. Clean, a welcome tray was a lovely thought and most welcome after our journey. The bed was very comfortable, and the kitchen had everything you needed. Having lovely weather made all the difference, being able to walk out to the garden in the morning and eat your breakfast. Then in the evening have a most welcome glass of wine in the evening sun after a day out walking. There are some lovely walks near by, or use your car and go further afield. Just along from the cottage is a store where you can get your morning newspaper and anything else you may need. Then next door to that is a retro cafe, where you can enjoy homemade cakes, a cooked meal or just a cup of coffee and if the weather is kind to you sit outside in the garden.
Thank you for taking the time to review the Searle. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay and in particular the Searle cottage. We very much look forward to seeing you again at some time in the future.
“A truly comfortable retreat”
An amazingly beautiful, homely and clean place with plenty of room for me and my wife along with our two month old daughter. All the mod cons you would expect (and some you wouldn't!), along with a fully stocked kitchen. A very nice welcome basket which was a pleasant touch. The accomodation is part of a total of three little 'holiday homes' which share laundry facilities which was convenient. There is a petrol station and a shop next door which sells everything you could possibly need for a short stay (including plastic cups!). There is also a cafe next to the shop which is open until 5.30pm (which we didn't use) but could have chosen to have breakfast, lunch or tea in. I describe the accomodation to friends and family as being 'in the middle of nowhere' but I use that in the most positive way possible - that is exactly what my wife and I wanted. We wanted a retreat where we would not be disturbed or have to think about anyone or anything, and in this respect, it was perfect for us. There are things to do within an hours drive away if you wanted lots to see and do, but there are plenty of walks you could do locally. I'm sure it would be a lovely place to be in the warmer months as there is a garden outside with picnic benches which would make a perfect place for a barbecue.
Thank you so much for posting a comment about your stay with us recently. We are very pleased indeed that you enjoyed your stay. You are right - in warmer weather it is a beautiful place to be. We know that we are very lucky to live in such a lovely part of Wales and we enjoy sharing its beauty with our guests. Thank you again for taking the time to comment on your stay with us.
