Location description from owner

The Wales region

Vulcan Lodge - the Faulkner sits in the Upper Wye Valley which is designated an area of special interest and beauty. It is only 3.5 miles from the market town of Rhayader: the gateway to the Elan Valley. With its network of reservoirs and dams the Elan Valley is considered to be the Lake District of Wales. The backdrop to the area is the Cambrian Mountain Range which extends from Rhayader to the coast of Ceridigion.

Llanwrthwl

Rhayader is a vibrant town with much to offer the visitor. With its Leisure Centre, Elan Valley Visitor Centre, Museum, Community Arts Centre (CARAD), Willow Globe open air Shakespeare theatre and the Red Kite Centre it is rich in culture and interests. Each year there are a number of agricultural shows in the surrounding villages and Rhayader itself has a Grand Carnival week with events occurring on a nightly basis over a 10 day period. There is a programme of free events at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre throughout the summer season and the Leisure Centre offers school holiday activities for children. There is also a playbarn 3 miles from the cottage. With a population of just over 2,000 Rhayader has a range of shops including a Spar store and chemist. It also has 12 pubs! For walkers the Wye Valley Walk is just a 10 minute walk from the cottage. The Red Kite Centre at Gigrin Farm where the wondrous raptors can be seen at close quarters at feeding time, is 3 miles away. For cyclists there are many cycle paths and trails close by and in Rhayader there is a mountain bike centre which offers guided tours as well as bike hire. For canoe enthusiasts there is a canoe access point on the river a short walk away and there are many opportunities for fishing both on the rivers Wye and Marteg and at Llyn Gwyn pool owned by Rhayader Angling Association.

“As good as ever...”

Reviewed 28 Feb 2016

Have been visiting this area for many years and have discovered something new every time. If you like walking, cycling, motoring, fishing, views, wildlife, food, dark night skies, history - you'll get it all around here. Have stayed at the Vulcan Lodge ever since it was converted from an abandoned pub some years ago and have always felt it to be a 'home-from-home'. Elaine, the owner, is always available by phone and will do everything she can to ensure a pleasant stay. Next door is a well-stocked shop/off-licence as well as a cafe serving very good food which can be eaten outside in their lovely garden. If you want a base from which to explore the Elan Valley and Mid-Wales this is the place to stay.

It was good to welcome you back to Vulcan Lodge. A returning visitor is always a good recommendation and your very positive comments are very much appreciated. Very best wishes Elaine Owner

“Great short break in mid Wales”

Reviewed 9 Apr 2015

Great location for visiting mid Wales. Rhayader 10 minutes Builth wells and Llandindod Wells a short drive away. Nice clean and warm accomodation - snow on the hills and River Wye at the bottom of the garden. Caravans and motorhomes can be accommodated on the site but none there when we stayed but we may try those facilities in our own motorhome.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review and thank you too for your positive comments. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and look forward to seeing you again some time in the future. Elaine Owner

“Nice secluded stay for two”

Reviewed 5 Sep 2014

Right in the centre of Wales my girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Vulcan lodge with the beautiful scenery and the river right on the doorstep.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Faulkner cottage. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay. It is as you say a beautiful part of Wales and we love sharing it with our guests. Very best wishes, Elaine Owner

“Lovely”

Reviewed 10 Sep 2013

This cottage was lovely, well equipped clean and spacious , Just off a main road but once in the grounds you would not think so, my only criticism would be that caravans can pitch up right outside your door and they can look directly in your windows not as remote as we thought

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide us with such positive feedback about your stay with us. It is much appreciated. I'm sorry you found the tourer vans a bit close: I presume you are referring to the French windows in the lounge not the bedroom windows which of course are too high to be overlooked. You are right in saying the Vulcan Lodge is not remote. I've now adjusted the information on our website to make this clear. Like you many guests love the river walk. We are so lucky to have it on the doorstep. Also, the Wye Valley Walk itself is only just across the river and can be reached by a 10 minute walk through Llanwrthwl village. Thank you again for giving us your feedback.

“Excellent accomodation in a beautiful part of Wales, perfect for a quiet break”

Reviewed 14 May 2013

The cottage was spotless and beautifully decorated. All possible needs were catered for, with plenty of tourist information. Walks along the river adjacent to the lodge were suitable for experienced walkers, dog owners and family groups. The lakes and dams are within easy driving distance and are set in stunning landscape - perfect for photographers and painters. Altogether a lovely place to visit with super accomodation. Don't forget your camera - I did !

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. What a pity you forgot your camera. If I'd known, I have a spare you could have borrowed. Never mind perhaps you will come again - our beautiful scenery is not going to go away!
