The historic Beaumaris is only a 5 minute drive from Underwood Cottages. Buildings there have survived civil war, piracy and even a scathing critique from Charles Dickens.
One hundred and fifty-four years has passed since he dropped in as a journalist on the Isle of Anglesey and I'd be interested to see what he thinks of the place in 2013. The pretty town is crammed with traditional pubs, shops and restaurants and has plenty to offer and you can easily spend a morning in the antique shops and galleries dotted around town.
But it's the castle that visitors seem to flock to with its ancient walls, and it's well worth a stroll around the ruins of the World Heritage listed fortress that was the last of Edward I's fortifications. A ticket for the castle will also get you into the impressive 17th century court house over the road and the ancient jail museum around the corner, built in 1829.
But historic buildings are not the only draw to Beaumaris. The old pier reopened last year after a multi-million pound face lift and is the perfect place to sit, eat ice-cream and watch the world go by.
The nearest beaches to Underwood Cottages are at Llanddona and Penmon, both of which are about two miles away.
Penmon is a wide, pebbly beach with an excellent rock pool system for catching small fish and crabs. Take a bucket and net. The beach is approached over a private headland so there is a charge of two pounds for parking. The toll man stands by the entrance gate and is often not there early in the day or during the week, so drive straight through. Penmon is the closest place on Anglesey to Puffin Island, and there is a classic Victorian lighthouse. A small cafe provides tea, coffee, ice cream and sandwiches. Penmon can be a good beach to visit on a rainy day.
Llanddona is a shallow sandy beach, ideal for toddlers. It is approached by a steep hill, but is worth the effort. Parking is free, and again there is a small cafe stall with benches outside. Probably a beach best visited on a fine day, Llanddona is ideal for paddling and swimming.

"Fabulous location with excellent facilites"
I stayed at the cottages in February with my husband and our children and another couple and their children. We had a lovely weekend and the cottages had everything that we needed, it was definitely home from home. We were even able to get Asda to deliver our food for the weekend. The weather was lovely so we were able to have a relaxing work to the pub on the Saturday afternoon over the hills. We will definitely be returning again.
Thank you for leaving a review I am delighted you had a great time and that you felt so homely. The views are stunning when you walk from the farm to the pub in Llanddona. I will look forward to seeing you again in the future.
