La Calzada is a traditional Asturian villa recently restored to make a comfortable holiday retreat. It sits at the high end of La Borbolla - a typically Asturian village set in a picturesque valley only 7 km from the coast and the beautiful beach at Buelna. The house is south-facing and boasts uninterrupted views of the Sierra del Cuera.

La Calzada has an open-plan area downstairs with a new, fully-equipped kitchen and wood-burning stove. On the first floor there are two bedrooms, a double and a twin, with doors to the large balcony at the front of the house. There's also a large double bedroom in the loft with views of the valley to the east.

To the front of the house there is a good-sized garden with table and chairs to enjoy the views at the foot of the mountains. There's a private drive between the house and the garden, both for the use of this house and the one next door, although the owners of the house next door rarely use it. There's also a separate parking area to the side of the house.

La Borbolla is a lively little village with a small rural primary school and a traditional bar-restaurant which serves simple meals. There are also plenty of good restaurants to choose from in the area. A baker visits the village every day and there are several other vendors visiting on a regular basis. It's a short drive away from the historic market town of Colombres, famous for the grand colonial houses built by the rich emigrants returning from Latin America. There's an open-air swimming pool in Colombres which is open from mid-June to mid-September. The pretty harbour town of Llanes with its medieval centre, outdoor cafes and restaurants and busy weekly market is 17 km away.

The Asturias region

Asturias contains a wide variety of landscape. The huge mountain range of the Picos de Europa lies a short drive away from the coast. The Asturian coast is lined with glorious beaches, none of which are spoilt by the high-rise resorts one associates with the Mediterranean 'costas'.

This range of scenery within a small area makes Asturias an exciting destination for all kinds of travellers. A bracing walk in mountains higher than any in Britain can be followed the same day with a stroll around one of the many picturesque fishing towns and villages.

Asturias has a warm, mild climate. Summers are hot without the searing heat of the south, while the winter months often bring days that are warm enough to eat and drink outside.

Asturians are considered open, friendly and generous by other Spaniards, and you can expect to be very well treated in restaurants and bars and by the house-owners and locals where you are staying. Eating is easy and pleasurable. There is always plenty of choice wherever you are - some tiny villages will have several bars. Asturian food is hearty and plentiful. Asturian cuisine specialises in meat and bean stews as well as a wide range of seafood and different hams, chorizos and cheeses. It is hard to imagine how anyone could go hungry. Vegetarians have to be selective but even so, there are plenty of tortilla, chickpea and mushroom dishes. The Asturian drink is cider. It is poured from on high by your barman who will expect you to down the fizzed-up few gulps in one go. Alongside a fresh spider crab it makes up a typical and refreshing summer meal.

"It's a small but comfortable and well equipped house, with nice views"

We thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay here. The house is small, but comfortable and easily fits six people. The kitchen, eating area and living room are all in one smallish room, which may not suit everyone, but was fine for us; the kitchen was well equipped. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all nice (2 with a balcony) with good views and there was plenty of hot water (not always the case in our experience!) The owner was extremely helpful with providing information about beaches, restaurants, things to do etc. and was very helpful and responsive with booking things as our Spanish was rather limited. The only slightly disappointing thing was the outside space - the garden was across the road, and not at all private. There was also some intermittent noisy building work next door but one, and the neighbours weren't always very quiet, although it didn't bother us much as we were out most days.
