Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

Tavernelle is located in Lunigiana, the most northern region of Tuscany. Nestled in stunning mountain scenery, it is an easy twenty minute drive from the A15 motorway and the train station at Aulla, and just 40 minutes from the coastal villages of Lerici and the spectacular Cinque Terre. It is accessible from two major airports: 1 hour's drive from Pisa airport and 2 hours from Milan Linate. Tavernelle is a superb base for Tuscan sighteseeing, located 1 hour's drive from Lucca; and 1 hour 30 mins from the renaissance wonders of Florence and Siena. The 3000sq kilometres of surrounding forest provides some of the best trekking in northern Italy, and the ski slopes at Prato Spilla are 25 minutes' drive. For trekkers, the ski lifts provide summer access to the high paths, or sentieri above Lagestrello.

Licciana Nardi

Tavernelle lies on the Tavarone river, in the heart of historic northern Tuscany, set against a backdrop of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park. The village boasts a bar and, two excellent restaurants, a weekend pizzeria, a butcher's shop/grocery store. The river offers swimming in cold rock pools, sunning and scrambling upstream through the eddies and falls.Summer weekends bring heightened activity, with the ballo liscio, or 'slow dance' held beside the bar attracting all-comers. Al fresco dining reaches a climax during the annual Festa della Trota, usually held on the first weekend in August. The village is transformed into a medieval marketplace, and feasting takes place noon and evening in the village park. Visitors and locals alike throng to this annual festa to sample the best local fare and wine, trout, lamb, pastas and tortas.

“Such a beautiful location!”

Reviewed 24 Jul 2015

Tavernelle is a lovely medieval village in the mountains and the large roof terrace of the apartment is the main attraction, giving spectacular views all around. The accommodation is perfect for two, simple but cosy with everything you might need. The location is ideal for exploring the mountain villages either walking or by car. We would recommend the walk up to the Montagne Verde restaurant in the old monastery which is clearly visible from the terrace. It's a steep 30 - 40 minute walk up the mountain path but the exercise is rewarded by excellent food and wine at a very reasonable price. We were also fortunate to meet the owners, Sheila and Michael, who were great company and very helpful in recommending places to explore.

We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Casa Giulia so much and that you liked Tavernelle and the area. I agree that the terrace is a great place to relax and to enjoy the views and the fresh air! Montagne Verde is certainly a superb restaurant and remarkable value.....good wine too! We enjoyed your company too and look forward to welcoming you back to Casa Giulia.

“beautiful location, very comfortable accommodation with fantastic terrace views”

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week holiday at Casa Giulia. We found it to be very clean, comfy and very well equipped with everything we needed, including a very extensive welcome basket which was much appreciated, especially the wine !! The only little problem we had was accessing the internet and this was very quickly and efficiently remedied after contacting Michael. The apartment has a lovely, large, sunny terrace with spectacular views, great to relax with a BBQ after a day exploring the area. Very good bar and restaurant is a 5 min walk and local shops very good, 5 min drive from property. Local villagers and neighbours very friendly. The extensive visitors book has loads of information on things to do in local area and further afield. We especially enjoyed cooling off in the mountain plunge pool 15 min walk away! All in all a wonderful holiday and we would love to return to Casa Giulia.

We are very pleased that you both enjoyed your stay at Casa Giulia and that you liked Tavernelle and the area so much. I will pass on your comments to ELISA who looks after the apartment for us.....she will be be delighted to know that you were happy with everything at Casa Giulia. You will be most welcome back to Tavernelle ......you were wonderful guests!

“Loved it!”

We found this property on the Owners Direct website and liked the look of it from the photos. I contacted the owners who could not have been more helpful and patient. The actual property and it's views are better than the pictures! It has a lovely large patio area and as the property is not on the ground floor it has a view above the surrounding properties....however 2/3rds of the views are over the mountains and very impressive. (casa Guilia is also 2/3rds up a mountain!). A car is essential as the property is a distance away from larger towns. (We had a Fiat Panda which turned out to be an excellent mountain goat). The village location of this property is terrific and we had 2 days that we didn't venture out of the village. The local bar is great and they speak enough English to make it easy to communicate when your Italian fails. 'Mama' does the cooking and it's a treat.(and inexpensive). The main trips we did were to Lucca and the Cinque Terre and Viareggio...which are all within an hours drive and worth the journey. I suppose the main question would be.....'would we return?'.......No Question about it. We would return in a heartbeat!

We are absolutely delighted that you both enjoyed your stay at Casa Giulia so much. You certainly seem to have got to see and do a lot during your holiday. I agree that Nella's cooking at the Capriolo is so good. I will pass on your compliments to her....she will be very pleased! Please do come back and visit Tavernelle and Casa Giulia again.......you were ' molto simpatici' . Thank you for your kind comments.

“A very special getaway!”

The area is beautiful; rustic; scenic; tranquil. The clean accommodation is perfectly small inside with everything you would need for comfort, dining and entertainment. So pleased to NOT have a TV! The balcony is a dream come true complete with furniture, built in bbq, plants and with the best views in the village. The owners are extremely helpful, willing to answer all of my pre holiday questions immediately and their guest information at Casa Giulia is very informative catering for those who wish to explore by car or on foot. The welcome basket that greeted us on our arrival was abundant, more than we would have ever imagined. It's a place you want to be in to watch the seasons. We could have stayed for much longer than our 10 days. We came away refreshed and revitalised. Sheila and Michael, you have a gem of a place. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I am absolutely delighted that you enjoyed your holiday so much. Casa Giulia is a very relaxing place and I am very pleased that you found it so. It is great to know that you found Casa Giulia so comfortable, clean and welcoming. I will pass on your comments to our housekeeper.....she will be very happy. It will be a pleasure to welcome you back and you can relax on the terrace once again!

“A Romantic Idyll in the real Tuscany.”

Reviewed 18 Aug 2013

A wonderful experience overall. The accommodation was exactly as described, clean, well equipped and homely with the most amazing views. What a delight to sit on the terrace listening to the birds and the babbling brook and gazing at the village and mountains. If you're looking for nightlife and shopping, go elsewhere! But if you crave tranquility, history and beauty, this is the place for you. The village of Tavernelle is so unspoiled that we felt we had stepped back in time- but with all the mod cons! The people were friendly and helpful, and made every effort to make us feel at home, praising our efforts to use a few words of Italian. My booking experience was quick and efficient, all my questions were answered and the owners went the extra mile to ensure that my holiday had everything I needed. The local food and wine are excellent, especially the family-run bar and restaurant in the village, which combines friendly and efficient service with quality local cuisine. A tiny note of caution- as the village is relatively unchanged from medieval times, parking is a short distance from Casa Giulia so make sure your suitcases have wheels!! For value for money, relaxation and a real taste of Tuscany I would highly recommend Casa Guilia, and I hope to go back sometime.

Many thanks for such a fullsome review. I am so glad that you loved Casa Giulia and Tavernelle so much. It really is a special place and also the people are so friendly and anxious to help. I will pass on your compliments to the chef and family at the restaurant. They are always anxious to serve good authentic Italian food to their guests and delighted to know that they have done so! I agree the views from the terrace never disappoint! It is a wonderful place to sit and relax. I hope you got to see the shooting stars and the fireflies. I hope you do come back both the village and I will be delighted to welcome you.

“beautiful surroundings - wonderful holiday”

Reviewed 18 Aug 2013

My husband and I were so very surprised at how lovely a place Casa Guilia was, very authentic, clean with the most beautiful panoramic views from the huge patio area where we enjoyed many barbecues. It was peaceful, romantic and so very relaxing. Would highly recommend.

Many thanks for your lovely comments. I am really pleased that you liked Casa Giulia and Tavernelle so much and that you found it comfortable, clean and welcoming. I also love a BBQ on the terrace or just sitting and taking in the views. I hope to welcome you back to enjoy it all again!

“In one word - Fabulous!!”

Reviewed 19 Oct 2012

Great location, lovely apartment. A bit of challenge the spiral staircase with suitcases a bit quirky. Outside space fab with brilliant views, had planned to have a bbq but got rained off at last minute but still managed as the little oven worked wonderfully. A real bonus having wifi as was able to research where to go each day. Bar/restaurant in village (the only one) do lovely meals especially pizza night on a saturday and sunday. Wine really cheap!! Only one slight problem was the mattress seem to slope into the middle.

I am delighted that your stay at Casa Giulia was so enjoyable. Also really pleased that you liked the terrace so much. Pity that it rained as a BBQ on the terrace is quite unforgettable! I appreciate your comment on the mattress. We ourselves slept there at the end of the season and have since changed it. Many thanks.

“A perfect escape”

Reviewed 17 Mar 2012

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We couldn't have imagined how stunning the setting would be. Not even the photographs and information on the website could have prepared us for just how beautiful the view from the terrace actually is! The accommodation is set in very quaint, typically Italian surroundings and had everything we needed. Tavernelle has been a wonderful escape. We will definitely return again. Dawn and Gary.

How wonderful that you enjoyed Casa Giulia and the terrace so much! I am really pleased that you found everything to your liking and that your holiday was such an overall success. I am delighted that you want to come back and experience it all again! I hope that you are still feeling the benefits of such a good holiday experience. Sheila.

“A unique Italian holiday experience”

Reviewed 15 Mar 2012

N. Tuscany is far more rugged than we might have imagined with mountains rising up to 7,000ft. Casa Giulia is set in a village approaching a pass over the Apuan Alps and the view from the extremely large terrace is stunning in all directions. The accommodation is full of character, comfortable and provides every convenience. We loved the people who were so friendly and helpful, everyone spoke to us whenever we were out walking. The food was our greatest surprise, quite distinctive cuisine, nothing really that you would expect (apart from pizza!) but every meal was relished and, not least, because the cost was half what it would be in more fashinable places. We would happily repeat it all.

I am delighted that your stay at Casa Giulia lived up to expectation. Tavernelle really is a very special place and I totally agree that the people are wonderful and the best neighbours! Relaxing on the terrace and the great value food always amaze. Hope to see you again soon, Sheila.
