The Rhône-Alpes region
Morzine is a beautiful, traditionally French village in the heart of the Portes de Soleil ski area, which has kept it's authentic Savoyade character but which offers fantastic facilities like that of a first class ski resort.
There is an abundance of cafe bars, restaurants, sports shops and shops boasting local produce, like cheese, meat and local arts and crafts. If you are
more adventurous, there are several nightclubs which stay open until the wee hours of the morning!
Besides from skiing and snowboarding, there are many other activities which are on offer in the local area:
- Dog sled rides
- Cross country skiing
- Snow shoeing
- Snow mobile riding
The Portes de Soleil is situated in the Northern Alps and is the largest ski area in the world, with over 650km of pistes within 14 linked ski resorts in France and Switzerland. There are over 260 pistes and nearly 700 snow canons to guarantee snow all season. The area has a vast range of skiing to suit all levels and abilities, whether you like wide motorway runs, off-piste tree runs or playing in the snow parks, the Portes de Soleil really does have something for everyone!
Lowest Altitude: 1000 m Highest Altitude: 2460 m 195 lifts, included on the Portes de Soleil lift pass 266 pistes catering for all levels: 25 black, 100 red, 106 blue and 35 green 650 km of pistes 694 snow cannons guaranteeing snow all season 89 slopeside restaurants Halfpipes: 3 The inclusive Portes Du Soleil Ski Pass covers the following 14 resorts, all of which are linked by lift: Avoriaz, Abondance, Champery, Champoussin, La Chapelle d'Abondance, Châtel, Les Crosets, Les Gets, Montriond, Morgins, Morzine, St Jean d'Aulps, Torgon, Val D'Illiez.
Les Onchets is a 5 minute drive from the centre of St Jean D'Aulps, which is only 10 minutes from Morzine.
It is a sleepy hamlet with around 20 chalets and is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday.
Arguably the friendliest village in the Alps, Saint-Jean-d'Aulps is located just 10 minutes drive to the north of the very popular resort of Morzine. Accommodation in Saint-Jean-d'Aulps tends to be more affordable and there is a thriving English speaking community, several restaurants and a very good bar.
Saint-Jean-d'Aulps is a friendly and typically French Savoyard town, situated in the Portes du Soleil, one of the largest linked international ski areas in the world. The resort is set in a picturesque valley, and has a distinct charm with its traditional chalet style architecture. Convenient links in the Portes du Soleil allow easy access to the nearby Swiss resorts of Morgins and Champéry, and the French resorts of Châtel and Les Gets, or over into Avoriaz for some more testing runs.
Non-skiers will also be happy in Saint-Jean-d'Aulps with shops, 2-3 bars, and restaurants to suit everyone. Popular with self-drive guests and families, Saint-Jean-d'Aulps offers great value and a warm welcome, with the whole of the Portes-du-Soleil accessible without the higher prices and busier streets of Morzine itself.

"So relaxing, great food, brilliant place to stay."
Our holiday couldn't have been better. Owen picked us up from the airport as planned and ran us into Morzine to get our skis. There is a chalet service for ski & boot hire but we had already pre-booked ours. The chalet is up a hill from the village so don't expect to go for a walk to the village in the evenings, but we were dropped off and picked up every day to and from the slopes and it worked perfectly. The owners Owen and Amy are really flexible and nothing is ever too much trouble. The chalet is beautiful, with comfy beds and a really relaxing lounge area - just like the photo on their well-informed website. There was plenty room - although we were the only guests that week and our bedroom was probably the biggest in the chalet. I don't think there will be many gaps next year though, as people will be booking up again once they've experienced this chalet and once word gets out! The food is fantastic - really big portions and a good variety. Breakfast was 'continental' style, afternoon tea was scrumptious and dinner was so tasty. We're not big on 'partying til dawn' so Chalet Sophie was perfect for us. We had great weather for the whole week, so can't comment on what you could do if there was no skiing, but there are loads of good DVDs to watch and plenty of books to read. Owen or Amy will run you to a good restaurant on their night off and arrange for transport home too. Great value for money and with a cheap flight you're definitely on to a winner.
