The Rhône-Alpes region
Chamonix is probably best known as the skiing and alpine capital of the world. As a destination it has a reputation for the extreme and this, whilst undoubtedly true, can mask a wide array of sporting and leisure activities (particularly in summer), peace and quiet, great nightlife, and superb scenery that can be enjoyed at whichever pace suits you. Chamonix is the perfect place to come for a weekend break or a week's holiday. In fact there is so much to do out here many people decide not to go back!
The town is at the foot of Mont-Blanc and following introduction of skiing in the early 1900s Chamonix hosted the first winter Olympic Games in 1924.
Les Houches sits at 1000m above sea level and is the first big alpine settlement you’ll come to in the valley. It is a great family resort offering a wide range of summer outdoor sports and is quickly becoming a haven for mountain bikers. In the winter it is the perfect choice for a family holiday with the ski resort geared towards beginner and intermediate skiing. Les Houches has its own lift system for skiing, hiking and mountain biking. The village is also the starting point for many attempts to climb Mont Blanc.
Les Houches has a different style of skiing to many of the other ski resorts of Chamonix. The wide pistes meander in and out of tree lined rolling hills that make it a perfect location for families or beginner to intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Les Houches’ slopes also provide great powder conditions and better visibility for the white-out days when the rest of Chamonix is in cloud. Often it is less crowded on a powder day and you will get more fresh tracks than on the Grand Montets (just be aware of the school holidays!).
The large ski area links to St Gervais and covers a vast range of beginner and intermediate runs as well as the black run ‘la Verte des Houches’ that hosts the world renowned downhill competition Kandahar.
New for the 2009/10 winter season was the introduction of Area 43 – the DC Winter Snow Park with huge table tops, gap jumps and rails. You can spot pro-riders getting big air and pulling off signature tricks or compete in some of the local and international competitions that are held throughout the season. There really is something for everyone here in Les Houches. If you are staying in Les Houches the daily ski bus runs regularly to and from Chamonix as well as other resorts throughout the day.
Chamonix is best known for its extreme skiing, climbing, high mountain hiking and mountain biking. This busy alpine village is extremely popular in the winter and summer seasons with tourists clambering for a glimpse of Mont Blanc.
CHAMONIX: Chamonix has all the facilities of a town; with a great variety of shops, restaurants and bars, cinema, museums, sports centre, ice-skating, tennis, squash, swimming pools and a very good 18 hole golf course.
There are fabulous walking and running trails all over the valley, some are world famous and every year Chamonix hosts the ultimate 'Ultra Trail' covering over 154km in August. For hikers this trail is known as Le Tour du Mont Blanc (5+ day walking trip). The climbing is spectacular with the highlight being the annual Climbing World Championships in July. Mountain biking is very popular for both cross-country and down-hilling trails and the golf course in Chamonix is of a very high standard with excellent facilities. During the summer the alpine rivers swell from the mountain snow and the white water activities really come into their own.
SKIING: Chamonix provides skiing for all abilities with nursery slopes at Les Planards, Les Chosalets as well great ski schools at all the ski resorts. However, Chamonix is ideal for the intermediate and advanced skier. The intermediate runs boast excellent groomed pistes, trails and mogul fields. For the expert skier there is limitless off piste skiing and some of the steepest and most challenging runs in the Alps including the awe-inspiring 22km ski down the Vallée Blanche on the Mer de Glace with a mountain guide.
The skiing in the Chamonix Valley is spread over 5 separate areas which are linked by a regular and efficient bus service included in the lift pass. At the base of the Valley is Les Houches. From the Chamonix centre Le Brévent which is linked to La Flégère. Up the Valley is Les Grands Montets at Argentière and finally Le Tour.
As the Valley cuts through the highest mountains in Europe, the skiing in Chamonix has a reputation for being among the best available. This reputation is built on the fact that Chamonix Mont Blanc has the world's biggest skiable vertical drop that is served by lifts (2807m). It also boasts one of the world's longest runs - 22 km through the Vallée Blanche - and staged the World's first Winter Olympics in 1924.

"This apartment just proves that location really is everything!"
It’s the first time we have stayed in a real ski in/ ski out place and it made such a difference! Ten minutes after putting on your skies by the French windows, you can be at the top of the Prarion Gondala. Pop home for lunch if you like or if you have forgotten something – it’s no problem. The view from the French windows is an amazing panorama of the Aiguilles and you can even monitor the progress of the Aiguille to Midi cable car as you watch the light constantly changing your view. The apartment accommodates a surprising number of people and is well kitted out to provide for them in terms of comfortable seating, dining space and kitchen/dining equipment. We found that the combination of sleeping arrangements and bathroom facilities catered well for our large family group of 3 generations. Private parking and a gorgeous heated indoor pool were a real bonus. Back to location.... Good shops, services and restaurants in Les Houches. We lovedthe free bus and train service in the Chamonix valley, so we had easy access to Chamonix town with its cafes, bars and restaurants, not to mention lots of up market shops. Alternatively you can try other ski areas such as Brevent, Argentiere and Le Tour without the hassle of digging out the car. We will definitely be returning.
