Description from owner

Description

Our chalet was handmade 12 years ago by my craftsman neighbor, whose family has lived in this valley for more than 200 years. We have a colorful organic garden and fruit trees, 2 bedrooms on the ground floor and a mezzanine with two twin mattresses pushed together upstairs. We're situated in a very private sun-filled spot in the village. So you can get up every morning before skiing and walk down to the boulangerie for your fresh, warm baquette like a local and return home to sit in the sun on the terrace in complete privacy. Our back terrace has a barbecue, picnic table and umbrella. It looks out over magnificent views of the close, glaciated mountains and wide sunny valley. There are beds and seating for 6, but 5 would be more comfortable given the chalet is small, there is one shower room and one toilet room. There's a wood fire in the chalet and firewood is included. Large interior chest inside the chalet is available for ski boots and there's a ski/snowboard locker

Location description from owner

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region

Our village of Les Contamines is literally at the end of the road, but far from sleepy. Where the pavement and car travel ends, a steep rock road built in Roman times to cross the Alpes ascends. Our friendly village (with no through traffic) is a jewel at the heart of the Mont Blanc region. The sensation of a hidden valley results in a very close knit local community. The village has preserved its historic aspect. More than 70% of old farm buildings have been restored in respect of the local Savoy architecture. The name of the village originates from ancient local dialect. The word “Contamines” once meant plowable land on the squires estate. You hear the medieval church's bells only during the day from the tower that once was part of an ancient castle. The famous "extreme sport" capital, Chamonix, is a half hour away. From there you can take a trip up Europe's highest cable car to the summit of the Aiguille du Midi, taking you to the dizzying altitude of 3842 metres where the views are out of this world. Ski conditions and terrain are like that found around Chamonix without the crowds.

“Lovely little chalet in the perfect location”

Reviewed 7 Apr 2016

Small but perfectly formed. Exactly as described. Everything that we wanted. Cathy and Sarah her representative in the village were more than helpful. We hope to stay there again.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, Penny. I'm happy that everybody enjoyed themselves and that you'd like to return. I was very concerned that it would be too small for your group of five adults and a youth. But I'm convinced having a warm, tight family with us makes up for inconveniences like waiting for the shower. Hurry back! Cathy

“Cozy chalet within easy walking distance of trails, shops and busline.”

Lovely little town nestled at the base of the Mont Blanc massif. Chalet has beautiful mountain and valley views and easy access to trails and mountain hiking, or to wander through the village. Only a few blocks uphill from the tourism office and bus stop. We hiked from the house up valley and stayed in a refuge that is part of the Tour de Mont Blanc. Spectacular.

I love the location too, right there along the fabulous Tour de Mont Blanc trekking route, that takes you through Italy, Switzerland and back through France. There isn't a season that is best there. I look forward to having you try winter next time!
