The Grand Massif region

The French Rhone-Alpes mountains are stunning and throughout the summer they are a mixture of rocks, greenery and mountain flowers, providing a huge variety of mountain activities we now almost prefer our summer to our winters in the Alps as there is so much to do in the summer! The weather and temperature can change rapidly in the summer, particularly as you ascend mountains and a summer mountain thunder storm is something to be remembered!

There are innumerable places of interest to explore in the Haute-Savoie and some beautiful mountain lakes for swimming but as Les Carroz is 15 minutes up the mountain from Cluses and the A40 motorway, a car is needed. Both Chamonix and Geneva are also only about an hours drive away.

Les Carroz-d'Araches

Les Carroz is a beautiful traditional alpine village inhabited throughout the year by locals so it is ‘alive’ out of season as well as during the season.

The village always has a gentle buzz to it, with the weekly market every Tuesday morning and the many cafes and restaurants offering a great variety of the local cuisine, many of which are based in the village centre. There is a two screen cinema providing two daily viewings in winter and summer.

In the winter they host an annual weekly hot air balloon festival and every week there is a torch lit descent down the slopes provided by the two local ski schools.

New for Winter 2012 is the fantastic refurbished sports centre providing out and indoor swimming in winter as well as summer – ideal for the non skier!

In the summer you can take advantage of the many outside/mountain activities organised by the ‘Bureau de Guides’ and the village Sports Centre. Every evening there are activities organised in the village centre for all the family so it is not necessary to leave the village. Special summer weekend activities include cycling, walking and horse riding events and for a whole week the ‘Choeur de France’ descends on the village for a week of singing.

By car or bike or foot, the other villages of the Grand Massif - Morillon, Samoens, Flaine and Sixt - can be reached. The village cable car operates throughout the July and August, giving you access to walking or cycling access to the mountains and these nearby Grand Massif villages.

“Great Skiing Holiday”

Reviewed 15 Feb 2014

Fantastic large chalet catering for 10 people. Well laid out and spacious. Everything you could possibly want in a kitchen all to hand, and catering for large groups is really easy. Well thought out bathroom facilities, with a great separate shower room and a further bathroom and toilet on each floor, which means no queue for the toilet when someone is having a bath. Only a 1 minute walk to the bus stop which takes you straight up to the gondola. Town is only an 8 minute walk. This was our second stay here and once again we were really happy with the chalet.

“A very well equipped spacious chalet in lovely village that met all our needs for a skiing holiday.”

Reviewed 8 Jan 2014

The chalet was better than expected. Nice decor, clean, warm, good sized rooms, an extremely well equipped kitchen, excellent boot / ski room, and plenty of parking in a nice quiet location on the edge of the attractive, lively Les Carroz village. Great for self catering and better value than other places we have stayed, particularly for New Year. We were 3 famililies with teenagers and there was plenty of room for us all. There was an excellent New Years Eve firework display! Night skiing takes place once a week and a new indoor swimming pool and tennis courts are a 5 minute walk away. The skiing here would not be great for beginners or young children in my opinion, but If you want to explore the Grand Massif ski area ( which includes Flaine and Samoens and don't mind having an easy 10 minute bus ride to the telecabine, we would certainly recommend a stay here. The buses are frequent and free and stop at the end of the road- very close. They did stop at 7pm though and you will need to use the bus or walk into the village for supplies and restaurants / bars, but that didn't worry us. There are plenty of ski hire places in Les Carroz, but probably wise to book ahead on the Internet at busy times. The tourist office in the centre was very helpful. You wouldn't necessarily need a car to stay here for a skiing holiday as there are reasonable transfers from Geneva airport. I don't think I would visit in the summer without one, though. You will need to take your own towels for the chalet as these are not supplied. Also the swimming pool only permits speedos - no shorts.

“Great Chalet in the Alps.”

The chalet at Les Carroz was a GREAT place to rent for our Christmas holiday with our family. Plenty of space, good location for free town bus into town and to the telecabine to get to the slopes. Les Carroz is a nice small town with good bars and restaurants. The chalet is well equipped for a winter holiday and being on the edge of town means it's quiet and great for getting out to the countryside. Very easy to find on arrival and everything in the house is explained really well. I would recommend this chalet for a family holiday.
