The Central Portugal region
Our apartment is superbly situated to provide a perfect base for all your holiday enjoyment - the perfect jumping off point for day trips to Lisbon (50 min). The region of Alcobaça (25 min) is remarkable: Alcobaça and Cós Monasteries, medieval town of Aljubarrota, Roman Villa of Parreitas, Museums, richness and variety in gastronomy.
Encompassing the municipalities of Alcobaça, Caldas da Rainha (20 min), Nazare (20 min), Obidos(20min), Fatima (religious sanctuary, 45 min) and Peniche (40 min), this is a unique region of modern rurality, united by a common cultural heritage and cemented by centuries of winegrowing and maritime and fishing traditions.
Caldas da Rainha is home to many art and design institutions, including numerous ceramic and sculpture museums. The town is famous for its local glazed ceramic pottery and has become the ceramic and pottery capital of Portugal.
Peniche is also the surfing capital of Portugal. Its beaches and breaks face in three different directions, allowing surfers of all abilities to hone their skills. Just off the coast of Peniche are the Berlengas Islands, now home to a protected marine life reserve. Throughout the summer the islands can be visited by taking a ferry boat from Peniche's harbour.
Fatima, the most important celebrations are held on 13th May (including the Candlelit Procession on the night of the 12th and the Farewell Procession closing the event on the 13th) and 13th October. Furthermore, the 13th of every month between these two dates is also a day of devotion. For those interested in the historical context of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, visits can be made to the houses of the shepherd witnesses in the village of Aljustrel.
Obidos, is a medieval walled village, with a turbulent past full of historical events that have marked the country, has been declared a national monument. Indeed, the whole village is no less than a royal “wedding present" - back in 1282 King D. Dinis offered it as a gift to his new Queen Isabel on their marriage.
In the region you can also visit Mira D'Aire (underground caves, 50 min) or play golf in one of the several luxury golf resorts (most are off a distance of 30 min driving): Praia d'El-Rey Golf Resort (designed by Cabell B. Robinson, 18 holes), Bom Sucesso Golf Resort (designed by Donald steel,18 holes), Campo Real Golf Resort (designed by Donald Steel, 18 holes).
S. Martinho do Porto is a village of the Municipality of Alcobaça that has one of the most beautiful beaches of Portugal. With its dazzling shell shaped bay, the waters are necessarily calm and its sand is white and fine.
Everything you could possibly need is at your fingertips. The apartment is centrally located near S. Martinho's restaurants, coffee shops, bars and supermarkets. The promenade has several esplanadas, bars and pastry shops. There are many fantastic Portuguese seafood restaurants and a few Italian restaurants to pick from – most with a wonderful view of the bay. There is also a lovely little park with jungle gym's to keep the little ones busy.
The village has a railway station and a bus station that can take you almost everywhere, Lisbon, Alcobaca, Caldas da Rainha, Peniche. The most common buses is “Rede Expresso” that allows you to purchase tickets and check timetables on its website.
