Lecce

Lecce
Located in the southern part of Apulia, Lecce is the capital of the Salento peninsula.
Thank to the elegance of its palaces, the fanciful baroque style of its countless churches and its charming squares, Lecce earned the title of “Florence of the South”.

Its ancient origins are confirmed by lots of testimonials of Roman, Medieval and Renaissance ages even if today the city is mainly known for its baroque. The most significant example of this artistic style is probably the Basilica of Santa Croce: built between 1549 and 1695, it is characterized by a richly decorated façade with grotesque figures and a large rose window. Next to the church is Palazzo dei Celestini, a former convent, now the Government Palace. The heart of Lecce is Piazza S. Oronzo, a square dedicated to the Saint Patron of the city whose statue is situated on the top of a Roman column. Behind the column are the ruins of the Roman Amphitheatre, the most relevant heritage of the Roman age. Within a couple of minutes walking it is possible to reach the most enchanting square in Lecce: Piazza Duomo. Brilliantly merged into a unique scenario, the Bell-Tower, the Dome, the Seminar and the Vescovado ensure an impressive view over the square.

The historical center of Lecce is enclosed by imposing walls partly still visible today as well the three monumental city-doors: Porta Rudiae, Porta Napoli and Porta San Biagio. Another important attraction is the Castle of Charles V, a fortress built with defensive purpose but later destinated to other functions such as theatre, museum and, currently, it is the seat of the Cultural Affairs of the township of Lecce.
It is worth visiting also the churches of S. Cataldo, San Matteo and Del Rosario.

Lecce is also famous for its “movida” through the streets of the old town which has a high concentration of cozy restaurants and trendy pubs.
