The Puglia region
The New York Times voted Puglia and Basilicata two of southern Italy's most up-and-coming destinations - and rightly so.
PUGLIA - APULIA the heel of Italy with an Adriatic and an Ionian shoreline is the country 7th largest region blessed with beautiful clean seas and a fertile land.
The deep south of the region from Brindisi to Taranto and Lecce is known as The Salento Peninsula a glorious land steeped in history colonised by the Greeks in the 7th century BC and for centuries fought over by Normans, Saracens and Turkish invaders.
Puglia and in particular Salento is famous for its food and cuisine - LA CUCINA POVERA - cooking the simplest way by making the most of the ingredients available; think of making the tomato sauce from hand picked tomatoes, think of hand made pasta and dishes prepared with hand picked wild greens. Most of the fish in Italy is caught off the Apulian coast, 80% of the pasta in Europe is produced here and 80% of the olive oil originates in Puglia, but it is the raw ingredients - the greenest vegetables, the sweetest fruit that have put Apulia on the food map.
Previously known for quantity rather than quality, Puglia wines have now been recognised for their quality with the best produced in the Salento Peninsula famous for Primitivo - Negroamaro - Malvasia grapes. Take a look at your supermarket shelves - there you will find a wide selection of wines from Puglia Salice Salentino - Copertino - Primitivo - Rosso salento - Leone de Castris - Squinzano on and on - try them !
In the heart of the Salento area of southern Puglia, 20 minutes drive south west from Lecce and approximately equal time from the coast and beaches. We are surrounded by beautiful countryside, land cultivated by local farmers and historical cultural centres such as "Galatina, Gallipoli, Otranto".
The area offers comprehensive shopping, banks, post office a wide choice of high quality pizzeria/ trattorias, caffe bars and lots of sunshine.
Visit during the Summer months and be amazed through visiting villages to experience their local Sagra's there is somewhere to go every night and absorb the beautiful way of southern Italian life.

"Beautiful villa with amazing pool in Salento."
We had a lovely week in this fabulous well equipped stunning villa with a beautiful pool. Beautifully looked after by Guiseppe who showed us the local area and stocked the fridge with essentials for our arrival.

"Very good with some reservations"
This is a spacious and well equipped villa, situated on the outskirts of Sogliano Cavour, a town of some 5000 inhabitants. We had been sent detailed and welcome directions and found the villa after a few very minor detours. We arrived early but were were welcomed warmly by Giuseppe and Piña who were both cleaning the house and ordering the garden and pool from the previous visit. They were generous in their time and solicitous in hoping that we enjoyed our visit. Giuseppe led us to a local restaurant for lunch since we had arrived outside the customary time for il pranzo. We enjoyed our stay at Casa Wally's, making frequent excursions to the coast on both sides, whether diving in grottoes or exploring inlets. Few stranieri, apart from a few Dutch and Germans so it was great to see the Italians at play. Our son and his friend loved the pool especially with its diving board and I rediscovered the pleasure of long distance swimming in an effort to work off the pasta. This is a fine place to stay but a couple of suggestions/caveats which are not meant to diminish our pleasure in having made Casa Wally our destination for one of our weeks in Salento: The house is peppered with printed instructions which although well intentioned, give the impression that the owner is not quite sure whether to trust the ability of his guests to look after his beautiful home and facilities. To be reminded constantly that one will be charged if this or that are broken is wearing and diminishes the ability of its guests to relax. We paid good money to visit and are sensitive, intelligent individuals. If the owner has had bad experiences in the past the solution is not to assail/berate newcomers with helpful hints.....the instructions should go, they are unwelcome and unwelcoming. The surrounding area, whilst honest and relatively untouched by tourism is arid and scrubby and the outskirts of local towns are blighted by the ugliest of developments, alas. Of course the eye adapts to the view but we had already time to acclimatise oursleves with a stay elsewhere in Puglia. The best of the trip was spent of by the sea or in Lecce with its marvels. The welcome of the locals in Sogliano Cavour was warm, if puzzled and with any historic settlement, the longer you stay, the more you uncover. Giuseppe was a great factotem and we hoped that our decision not to avail of his barbecuing skills did not offend this fine man. So all in all, a spacious and magnificent property just needing a little less instruction and a little more confidence in its short term visitors. If you want immediate access to sea and beach, especially with children in tow then you may opt for somewhere a little closer to the action but for a slice of authentic Salento with excellent facilities you will enjoy what Casa Wally has to offer.

"An island of tranquility in the very south of Italy."
This property is in the middle of the of the southern part of the heel in Italy. You can swim in both the Adriatic and Med in the same day with both being about 30 mins east and west of the property by car - the snorkelling was excellent off the rocky shorelines. The property itself is on the outskirts of a working village - we cycled to the baker and the fishmonger in the morning and there were also 3 good supermarkets, 2 of which also have excellent deli counters. There were a number of local cheesemongers also and generally the price of food was significantly less (and the quality better) than in the UK. Locally, the largest town was Galatina (where we enjoyed a wine tasting at Santi Dimitri (ask for directions to their favourite cheesemonger as well as purchasing a litre of primitive for 1.5 Euro per litre). The city of Lecce was only about 40 minutes away. There is an abundance of historic sites, both inland and on the coast along with local fishing ports and excellent restaurants - Guiseppe will be able to point out all the best places to you. Indeed, this was the warmest welcome we have had anywhere we have rented - Guiseppe also maintains the pool and garden perfectly. I would recommend this property for families with small children who are content to enjoy the excellent pool and take the odd day trip out, for those that just want to chill and for those that love exploring the history and food of the region. We had a superb holiday.

"Homely and comfortable accommodation with beautiful pool and local guide on hand"
This is a great spot for accessing the whole of Salento - both coasts and the very tip of the heel of Italy. You need a car - it is fairly remote. The pool is wonderful, fruit and veg growing in the garden and an amazing air of tranquility. The local contact for the property was unbelievably kind and helpful and made our whole stay a total pleasure. Also has air conditioning which is a great plus when it reaches 42 degrees! Really cool, dark rooms for my boys meant lots of lovely sleep for them and therefore also us! Hooray! Many thanks

"Wonderful house, very friendly and helpful owners, fantastic area"
First of all we would like to thank Christine, Giovanni and Christian for their hospitality and help throughout our stay – starting from easy booking of the villa, helpful direction from the airport, tips for the best beaches as well as fantastic fish restaurant in Gallipoli, introducing us to the owner of the best Ristorante on Sogliano Cavour… The house is very comfortable for a big family, in great condition, clean, well equipped, with plenty of towels, kitchen equipment, cooking and cleaning materials. We really enjoyed terrace with outdoor kitchen and large garden with fresh vegetables we were allowed to enjoy. We should highlight fantastic pool (which Giovanni cleaned every other day!). We enjoyed it every day and our kids simply loved it! We also had a chance to taste fantastic Pugliese cousin during a great evening with Christine, Giovanni and their friends Giuseppe and Pina. The location of the house is excellent. You can reach beautiful beaches of Gallipoli and Otranto in 25 minutes, as well as explore wonderful Salento. If you want to relax, you can simply stay in the villa and enjoy all its comfort and privacy.
