Location description from owner

The Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region

In the Hautes-Alpes, on the edge of Provence and famous for its association with Napoleon who marched through on his way to Paris after his escape from Elba.

It is also noted for its sunny climate, boasting 300 days of sunshine a year.

Ideal for walking and hiking in the Spring and early Summer, kayaking and rafting are available on the Guisane, one of the most famous rivers in the Alps for enthusiasts.

Monetier-les-Bains now has one of the best thermal spas in the region. with Roman themed areas, outdoor waterfalls and private treatment rooms

The Parc Nationale des Ecrins is on the doorstep with glaciers, 4000m peaks and alpine pastures. You may spot golden eagles, chamois, bouquetin, marmottes and wild red deer.

Le Monetier-les-Bains

Serre Chevalier is one of the largest ski areas in France, with 250km of pistes to suit all levels of skier. Stretched along a high valley, from 1200m to 1500m above sea level, the pistes are strung out along the length of the valley, with wide open and sunny bowls at the top, and skiing through the larch forest below.

For the more adventurous, there is some great off-piste skiing and boarding, snowparks for the freestylers, and nursery slopes for the beginners. There is something to suit all levels of skier.

For the non-skier, it is an ideal place to spend a holiday with your skiing family, as you can while away your time in the local thermal springs, the pool and sauna, or catch the ski bus down to the walled town of Briancon, a world heritage site, built by the architect Vauban in the 17th century.

The village of Monetier-les-Bains has a traditional feel, with local food stores selling produce from the local farms . Restaurants range from creperies, pizzerias and alpine specialities, to more gourmet experiences of the Hotel Alliey, and Peche Gourmande in Briancon. Thermal waters run through gullies in the main street, and you can relax in the thermal waters at the new spa complex, with Roman baths, saunas, and steam showers.

On the edge of two national parks, Queyras and Ecrins, wildlife is abundant in summer, and alpine flowers cover the slopes. Cycle along the valley to the hamlets of Le Lauzet or Le Casset and sample local cheeses and ham, or visit the alpine Botanic gardens at the top of the Col du Lauteret, with sections devoted to all the major mountain ranges of the world, and a memorial to Scott of the Antarctic who trained for his famous trip to the Antarctic there.

“Wonderfully”

Reviewed 8 Mar 2013

Very cozy and warm apartment, sunny side. Quiet place, but close to lifts and to termal bath. Fully equiped kitchen, heated floor. Warm open pool and sauna, where you can relax after ski day

“Restful”

Reviewed 16 Aug 2011

Well appointed small flat, with use of heated pool and sauna. Endless beautiful walks in the mountains - we got high enough up to touch snow in August, despite the weather being lovely. Really pretty mountain village - although food on the whole not the best France has to offer. Will definitely be returning in winter for skiing. Overall a great family ski resort, particularly for those with younger children.
