Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

The Charente is one of the four departments which make up the Poitou-Charente region, together with Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne. Situated in the south of the region, just one department away from the Atlantic coast, the climate is mild and temperate, with a countryside that changes from vineyards and fields to rolling hills and forests, with hills and gorges in the east and south together with many rivers and lakes which provide the backbone of the region.

The region has one of the richest heritages of Romanesque art and there are many ‘must see’ monuments and buildings including Angoulême’s Cathedral St Pierre, the towering belfry at Lesterps Abbey, the murals at Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe, the west front of Church St Jacques at Aubeterre and the magnificent château at La Rochefoucauld to name just a few.

You can’t live in or visit the Charente without experiencing the local markets and fairs. They are generally held in the mornings so be prepared for an early start as they tend to close around midday. You will find anything from fruit and vegetables to live or ready to cook poultry, as well as other household items for sale. If you're really lucky, you may even find a treasure or two! Visiting these local markets is one of the simplest pleasures of a holiday in France. As you wander, your senses will be aroused by the perfume of herbs and spices.... you will find quality fruit and vegetables at excellent prices, also meat, bread and cheese fact, the perfect way to begin your holiday is to visit a local Sunday market to stock up with fresh local produce.

Le Lindois

Ten minutes away is the pretty market town of La Rochefoucauld with its imposing Chateau and full range of shops and restaurants. The Chateau is open to the public for guided tours.

In the other direction you will find the well- preserved medieval town of Confolens, home to the annual world folk festival ‘Danses et musiques du monde’, which takes over the whole town in August.

The nearby lakes of Lavaud and Mas Chaban offer scenic picnic areas, sandy beaches, family restaurants, swimming, sailing, mountain biking and a fantastic play area for children. Almost 400 hectares of fresh water, set in the heart of the valleys, are ideal for fans of the open air.

Aventure Parc - Explore the world between earth and sky in 7 circuits with over 70 individual challenges of increasing difficulty.

Kayaking - Parents and children alike can try their hand in a canoe or kayak at Montbron on the Tardoire or at Aubeterre or Brantome on the Dronne.

Angoulême - Festival venue for comic strips, rock music, vintage cars, toys and games. The capital of the Charente offers a buzzing cultural calendar and every September hosts to the world famous Circuit des Remparts motor race.
Throughout the year, well-established festivals draw visitors from France and beyond. Each year The Comic Strip Festival (Festival international de la bande dessinée) attracts more than 200,000 fans of all ages who come to see their strip cartoon heroes come alive on the drawing boards and meet their famous creators.

The Festival des Musique Métisses, now a national reference for African, fusion and world music, showcases up and coming new artists alongside established major stars.

Ludoland, specifically for children and featuring the latest in toys and games and the Gastronomades, for gourmet produce, cookery books and media form all over the world.

Cognac - If you're a Cognac connoisseur, then a visit to the 'spiritual home' is a must! Almost all of the Cognac houses provide excellent tours and tastings throughout the summer. Cognac also hosts the famous Blue Passion music festival, held each year in July.

Saint Sornin Vineyard - In the valley of the Tardoire, close to the boundary with the Dordogne, winegrowers have been cultivating and harvesting vines in Saint-Sornin for 30 years. Tours of the Saint Sornin vineyard can be arranged and the 'cave' at the vineyard sells its own produce at reasonable prices.

Brantome - Known as "the Venice of the Perigord", this charming medieval town is built on an island on the river Dronne. A popular tourist hot-spot in the summer months, especially on market day (Friday) where there is a wealth of local produce on display. It's always fascinating to sit at one of the many cafes or bars and watch the canoeists paddling around - especially as they attempt to negotiate the weirs! With an abundance of activities, it's ideal for families and a golfers haven.

For The Golfer - Golf international de la Prèze. The courses are set in 65 hectares of wooded valleys. The ornamental lakes, slopes and undergrowth provide a range of natural difficulties. The fine fairways and fast greens make it a challenging course of international standard.
Golf de l'Hirondelle - Angoulême. It is built on a spur of limestone rock opposite the town. There are fine views of the cathedral and the pink tiled roofs. The 18 holes cover about 34 hectares in the St-Martin woods. The fairways call for good physical condition and a high degree of skill notably because they are very narrow.

Go-Karting - The circuit du Perigord, just 30mins away, is one of the regions major international karting circuits which hosts competitions for enthusiasts from all over Europe. With 2 circuits - the main track boasts a length of 1078m, whilst the under 14's try their hand at karting on the smaller track - there's lots to see! Go and watch the thrills, spills and skills of the drivers or even better, even if you are only an enthusiastic amateur, why not have a go yourself?

Velo Rail - All the year round, regardless of age or ability, the Railroad Charente-Limousine enables you to discover at your own rhythm the landscapes of North-Charente by an extraordinary 'Rail-bike' which runs on a disused railway line.

Futuroscope - Packed with thrills, images in giant-screen format, extraordinary encounters, mind-blowing shows, role-playing, and much more. Futuroscope lets you enjoy new excitement that will amaze you, play on your senses and involve you in the action, as you escape into new worlds of fun, live in the future today and see this world in a new light.

...and much, much more!

“A Hidden Treasure found at Le Tilleul”

Reviewed 16 Jul 2014

We enjoyed a fantastic week at the Gites; 2 families with a total of five children aged between 7-14. The accommodation was clean and exceptionally well appointed with modern kitchen equipment and other quality mod cons. On our arrival we were greeted by the owners who were warm, friendly and extremely helpful. This continued throughout the week and was very much appreciated by us all. The location is idyllic; peaceful with beautiful views over the local countryside. The proximity of the Gites meant that we all barbecued together whilst watching the children perfect their boules and volleyball skills on the lawn. The Gites are ideally positioned for families on holiday together. The most popular part of the holiday for us all were the outstanding facilities. An excellent well maintained swimming pool (with child safety alarm and lockable gate), table tennis table, volleyball, football pitch, badminton and even darts. When we weren't at the Gites we travelled to local activities. A superb 'Go-Ape' centre (15 mins), free canoeing on a lake (30mins), quiet family cycle paths (20 mins), countryside walks (10 mins), weekday town market (25 minutes). There is a plethora of activities within a 30 minute radius, but on most days we were very happy to stay by the pool and relax.....afterall we were on holiday!! I would highly recommend the Gites to anyone looking for accommodation for 2 families holidaying together or perhaps an extended family. Excellent space, wonderful facilities and friendly owners. One regret. We had to come back home! Au revoir until 2015.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your detailed Review of your week with us at Le Tilleul. We are so happy that you enjoyed what we offer here and it would be great if you came back to see us again and did all the things you didn't have a chance to fit in this time! Thanks again and A Bientot!

“Great accomodation, hosts and facilities - first class!”

Reviewed 13 Jul 2014

The Gites at Le Tilleul provided us an excellent base to relax and explore the local assets, which there are many - cycle rides, lakes, walks, classic french villages and much more… The Gites themselves are extremely well equipped, clean and very homely. The views from the Gites are stunning, especially with the sunflowers out. The outside space and facilities provided plenty of room for the children to run around as well as amuse themselves, whether playing football, table tennis, trampolining or swimming. The terrace area overlooking the pool provided an excellent space to wine, dine or simply relax! You will find the owners very helpful and welcoming. We have stayed in many Gites and Cottages over the years and this is certainly one of our favourites. We will return. Highly recommended!

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a comprehensive and complimentary Review of your stay at Le Tilleul. It was an absolute pleasure having you all to stay - fun, interesting people with polite, respectful yet fun-loving children - what more could we ask for in our guests? We sincerely hope you will come back and see us before too long!

“Fantastic comfortable holiday, highly recommended. Truly delightful.”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2013

The place is lovely, the gites are very tastefully renovated and comfortable. There were 7 of us, aged from 13-76 and there was more than enough room with the beautiful big (soon to be heated) pool, shady summer terrace with hammock, shaded terrace outside the gites, gym, large playing area for football, badminton, boule, table tennis; everyone had as much space as they could want. Les and Sara are delightful; as discreet or as sociable as you want; very generous with fresh eggs and produce, and could not have been more welcoming or friendly. They did everything possible to make our stay perfect; nothing was too much trouble. There are 2 supermarkets within about 20 minutes drive; one of them open Sunday mornings. There is a good high ropes course within 15 minutes drive; a great day out for the whole family. Limoges airport is a delightful 45-60 minute drive away. What more can I say, but thank you to the Hendersons for a really relaxing holiday.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for reviewing your stay at Le Tilleul, and thank you also for your very kind and complimentary comments. It was an absolute pleasure having you and your extended family to stay at Le Tilleul and I hope you will find the time in your hectic schedules to pay us a return visit before too long.

“Great holiday - just what we were looking for”

Reviewed 26 Oct 2012

A really well kept and luxury holiday home. They were well kitted out and kept very clean. The 2 homes are adjoined and next door to the owners, who couldn't have been more helpful. Pool was a great size with loads of toys for the kids. Huge amount of outdoor space for children to play. Enjoyed canoeing and sailing nearby. It worked really well for a group of 10. Wifi signal did not work in one of the properties but the owners are fixing it.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your positive Review. We very much enjoyed having you and your extended family to stay at Le Tilleul and hope to welcome you back again in the future. With regards to the WiFi signal - we appreciate that, at the moment, the coverage does not extend over the entire combined property although coverage in Le Cerisier, its patio and on the Summer Terrace is pretty good. Nonetheless, we hope to have a bridge router installed for 2013 in order to achieve more widespread coverage, particularly for the residents of Le Pommier.

“Fantastic well equipped accommodation in peaceful setting”

We were a 3 generation family we found the Gites very well equipped and the pool was the icing on the cake. Plenty to do roundabout, including canoeing and sailing.

Owner's reply: Thank you for taking the time to write a Review on your holiday at Le Tilleul - it was a pleasure to have you and your extended family to stay. We strive to provide a peaceful environment where our guests can relax and unwind and you seemed to find that here. We hope to see you all again before too long.

“Perfect Family Holiday”

Reviewed 17 Jun 2012

We stayed as a family of 7 in June. Taking both Gites provided us with really flexible family accommodation. We took advantage of the wonderful living room space of Le Pommier for evening film viewings and drinks on the balcony. Whilst making use of the excellent BBQ facilities and outside dining space of both Gites. Both Le Pommier and Le Cerisier offered wonderful standards of accommodation and it was great to have the opportunity to enjoy both. We all agreed we had a fantastic family holiday and have very happy memories of our time at Le Tilleul, we would love to return.

Owner's reply: Thank you for taking the time to write such a flattering Review on your stay at The Gites at Le Tilleul. When we renovated Le Cerisier we tried to do it in such a way that it offered something different, but complimantary, to Le Pommier whilst still maintaining the same high standards of finish and furnishings. We were glad you were able to enjoy it in exactly the way we had envisaged -making use of the differing benefits offered by each gite in its own way. We very much enjoyed having you to stay at Le Tilleul and look forward to seeing you again before too long.

“absolutely fabulous”

Reviewed 11 Jun 2012

The accommodation was everything & more, could not have found better! with beautiful views across the lovely countryside. All the help/information from the hosts was excellent, the amenities/utilities were top of the range i.e. everything you would expect to have in a top class establishment, even down to the gas bar-b-q's. There is also an outdoor terrace adjacent to the pool area with large table, chairs and mini bar, great for outdoor B.B.Q's. The pool area is south facing, so sunny all day. The area is furnished with umbrellas ,sun beds with comfortable cushions, poolside shower & various inflatables for children. The pool itself is a really good size with shallow end 1 metre, sloping gradually to 2.5 metres. Within easy reach of the Gites there is go-karting, 3 lakes with a whole range of water bourne activities & an adventure park with all sorts of climbing & tree walking activities. What we liked best was everything. What we liked least was having to leave this beautiful location & the Gite.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your very positive Review on The Gites. When we converted Le Cerisier, we tried to create a different 'feel' to Le Pommier, whilst still maintaining the same high quality and standard of fixtures and fittings, which we feel is important to offer our guests. Therefore when families take both gites together, as you did, they are able to share the benefits of both and enjoy, for example, the open plan first floor living space of Le Pommier which has enough space for the occupants of both gites to relax and be together, with the larger patio of Le Cerisier, where the entire family can gather and enjoy an 'al fresco' meal together. It is gratifying to hear, from your comments, that we appear to have got it right! We very much enjoyed having you to stay and hope you will return before too long.
