Description

Canonge is a lovely cottage for 5 people set amongst the terraced vineyards of Le Fel and looking down onto the Lot valley and river 860ft below. This is the oldest house in le Fel, built of stone with lauze tile roof and over many years has been creatively renovated by the French owners. They have filled the house with wonderful curiosities that give the house its own special ambience. A cellar goes back to the time when monks produced and stored their wine here. The house and pool are set in magnificent surroundings enjoying views that will take your breath away.

This has got to be one of the most amazing holiday properties in the region both for its views and the layout both in the house and outside. There are many different levels and steps between terraces and rooms all delightful and charming. Canonge is a house extraordinaire! However, because of this we would not recommend the house for families with children under the age of 14.

There are many different levels and steps between terraces and rooms all delightful and charming. Canonge is a house extraordinaire! However, because of this we would not recommend the house for families with children under the age of 14.

The main entrance from the terrace leads into a very large dining area with a glass topped table, fireplace, and a well equipped kitchen. The staircase in the dining room/kitchen area leads to the large bathroom with a bath, shower and washing machine. A glass roof gives a wonderful sensation of light and space. There is also a separate WC. Beyond the kitchen, is a spacious bedroom with a large double bed, wardrobe and comfortable chairs with its own terrace.

Also on the ground floor to the left of the dining room/kitchen is the sitting room with sofa, chairs, TV (French and English satellite channels) and access through French doors to the terrace and barbecue area. This room as with all others is decorated in a wonderfully artistic style. A staircase from the sitting room leads to the large second double bedroom and then above this surprising room is a mezzanine floor that provides a reading and relaxing area with access to a small terrace and the vineyards surrounding the house.

The design of the house with its special features and different levels is not for the faint hearted or those guests who prefer minimalist surroundings. Canonge is for the romantics who want to be wrapped in seclusion and stunning surroundings to soak up the quiet serenity which this wonderful part of France provides.

The accommodation comprises of:

• A fitted kitchen with refrigerator, electric cooker, & hob.

• An open plan living and dining area with dining table and chairs and comfortable armchair and sofas.

• 1 bedroom with double bed on the ground floor and 1 with a double bed and 1 small single bed on the first floor

• 1 bathroom with bath and shower attachment, hand basin and separate WC.

All utilities, end of stay cleaning, bed linen, towels and pool towels are included in the price.

It has its own driveway of 500 meters through the vineyards of le Fel. A grassed walkway brings visitors from the parking area through a pergola with hanging vines, which gives beautiful dappled shade and leads up the cobbled steps to the house and the front sun terrace. A large dining table and chairs overlook the swimming pool and breathtaking views of the river below.

The 8x4m private pool is surrounded by decking with sun beds.

The picturesque village of Le Fel with its two good restaurants is a short drive away,or a 20 minutes walk through the steep vineyard terraces. Montsalvy and Entraygues are both 9 kilometers away. In both villages there are banks, shops, bakers, bars and restaurants plus weekly markets, where good, reasonably priced local produce can be found. The large towns of Aurillac and Rodez are about an hour’s drive and both offer extensive shopping, culture, restaurants and activities to suit all tastes

Location description from owner

The Midi-Pyrénées region

The Cantal region descends from the breathtaking volcanic Mountains in the north down through gorges and river valleys. Steeped in historical interest it has an abundance of ancient sites, monuments, castles, towns and villages. It is an unspoilt region where visitors can enjoy rural life with clean air and glorious countryside yet still find plenty of activities to interest everyone of any age. The local people are friendly and take great pride in their region's heritage and are always keen to introduce visitors to their treasures whether food, drink, their way of life or the countryside. Most of our properties are located around the medieval village of Entraygues sur Truyre nestling in the heart of the picturesque Valle du Lot on the border of the Cantal and Aveyron. Entraygues is in the north of the department (or county) known as the Aveyron, which is one of eight in the Midi-Pyrenees. It is here where the river Truyre tumbles out of the Auvergne and joins the river Lot.

Le Fel

At the centre of our region is Entraygues-sur-Truyère at the confluence of the Lot and Truyère rivers, which was founded in the 10th century and by the middle ages had become an important town and bustling river port shipping local produce (notably wine, cheese and wood) to Bordeaux and from there to the rest of France and beyond. The name comes from the old language of the region Occitan, which is still taught in schools and translates to “entre les eaux” meaning between the waters. Once fortified, traces of the old town walls and 2 out of 213 towers from the old castle can still be seen. Today it remains beautifully preserved with narrow cobbled streets, timbered and corbelled houses and its 2 gothic XIIIth century bridges. The Truyère bridge was a key river crossing for pilgrims on the “route de St. Jaques de Compostella” (St .James’s way) down to Santiago in Spain. Pilgrims can still be see throughout the region following the well trodden path to Galicia today

As well as exploring the town’s history, visitors will find a full range of shops, restaurants and services for practical and enjoyable purposes. There are weekly markets and even night markets in the summer selling local produce.

Whether you like walking, driving around to explore medieval villages, more strenuous activity such as canoeing or horse riding, sampling the delights of the regional cuisine there is something for everyone. All our houses have information on what to do.With the nearest Auto route 60 miles away and the nearest railway line 30 miles little has changed over the years and the Vallée du Lot remains a haven of peace and tranquillity.
