The Midi-Pyrénées region

Tarn et Garonne:

An ideal holiday region in southern France with a rich heritage:

The fortified towns and medieval villages, castles, abbeys and museums.

You will find all information in the summer guide to the Tarn-et-Garonne: Le guide d'ete.

Below is a summary of various attractions in the area, sorted by location.

Lauzerte is 9 miles from Lespinet. The old walled town is one of France's most beautiful heritage and has "Un des plus beaux villages de France" nomination. There are various activities in the village such as musical evenings in the church or in the cafe.

There is an attic sale (vide grenier) in July and an antique market in August. Furthermore there are regular repas-evenings, fine dining French style at long tables.

This village lies between the rivers Aveyron and Bonnettel. A town with a significant past, a valley wich the Romans called Nobilis Vallis. It has the oldest town hall in France anno 1125, it is a truly medieval town, whose streets and alleys are over 8 centuries old with heritage houses with pointed arches and covered walkways. Today the town hall and a museum have the extraordinary collections include prehistoric objects found in the area. There is a market hall on the main square with its disk-shaped cross (14th century), the beautiful facades, the arms and the banners bear witness to the important and rich past. It is surrounded by protected the scenic gorges of the Aveyron, the cliffs of the Roc d'Anglars and the Cirque de Bone, which are located on one of the pilgrim roads to Saint Jacques de Compostella. In the vicinity are the castle of Cas, the Grotte du Bosc with a museum, the Cistercian abbey of Beaulieu and Rouergue with its center for contemporary art.

Castelnau Montratier is a colorful town a short distance from Lespinet. There is much to do, play petanque with the locals in the main square, or enjoy as a spectator on the terrace of a fine wine. In the vicinity of the town is also much to do in the sports, such as mountain biking, ballooning and golf. The course consists of 9 holes, par 3, 4 and 5.

Saint-Cirq Lapopie is an extraordinarily beautiful medieval town, which has become a real artist and craft village. It is situated on a cliff above the banks of the Lot. The road from Cahors to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie runs along the rocks, and is itself worth a trip, but the ultimate is of course Saint-Cirq-Lapopie itself. Leave your car on the way down the parking stand and go on foot via the signposted walk to this formidable village, where you will feel as being back into the Middle Ages. A real winner!

The Pont Valentré is a world famous bridge. It is a fortified 14th century bridge over the Lot (construction started in 1308). Majestically seven arches span over the wide river. With its solid 40m high towers with their pointed roof it can be clearly seen that the bridge was part of the medieval defences.

The central tower, which served as a lookout, can be visited during the months of July and August. The long construction time of the tower gave rise to an old legend: Due to slow progress in construction, the master builder made a pact with the devil who was supposed to help him. As he wanted to save his soul, he made a bet with the devil just before completion to bring him water for the last batch of mortar in a large sieve. The devil of course was unable to provide the water in the sieve and lost the bet. In revenge, the devil broke a stone from a corner of the center tower every night that had to replaced the following day every time. During its restoration in the 19th century the architect asked a sculptor to make a stone sculpture of the devil pulling a stone out of the wall. That sculpture was then placed where the stone was missing. Since then the bridge is also called the "Devil's Bridge" or the tower is called "Satan's Tower".

France has many departments of which some are located in the area of the Midi-Pyrenees. These departments are: Ariège, Aveyron, Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrenees, Lot, Tarn and Tarn-et-Garonne. France furthermore has many regions which usually overlap the department limits and owe their name to the typical character of the area. The region in which we are located is called Quercy Blanc, it gets this name from the white rock that is typical for this region.

Trejouls, which is the village that Lespinet is located in lies in the department of the Tarn-et-Garonne, on the border with the Lot.

Trejouls is situated between the rivers Barguelonne and Lendou, the core consists of a dozen houses, a church, a school, a tennis court and a large salle de fetes. Trejouls has 262 inhabitants on a surface of 1350 hectares.

On the outskirts of the village is Lespinet: a 10 acre estate on a 17% slope

Lespinet is a former winery, which has been renovated into a beautiful complex of 8 holiday houses and a bed and breakfast with a bar and restaurant, pool, playground and tennis court (the latter is located 1 km away). The property is under Dutch management (South Limburg). The buildings are typical of the Quercy Blanc, in white rock stone. The entire property exudes a quiet country atmosphere, however this does not mean that there is not a lot to do in its surroundings. Lespinet is located on southern slope, which gives a wonderful view over the valley.

The local climate has mild temperatures, it does not cool as fast as in other regions, so you can stay outside until very late. According to the locals, we have the privilege to enjoy a micro-climate. The region has beautiful spring and autumn weather, when the sun gives you a summer feeling!

The houses / gites and chambres d'hotes on Lespinet all have their own character and therefore no accommodation is the same. The all have a French country atmosphere, but they are fully equipped with modern convenience. They have tile or wooden floors and some have antique wood burners. In summer the white rock keeps the houses pleasantly cool. In addition, all homes have their own completely private terrace with garden furniture and parasol. Gas barbecues are available, which can be requested the day before.
