Location description from owner

The Isle of Purbeck region

The Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, southern England, is not really an island but an idyllic and beautiful area of rolling hills and downs, sandy beaches, the dramatic World Heritage Jurassic coastline and a wealth of places with historic and natural interest. There are no motorways - just minor roads, country lanes and footpaths linking small towns, villages and farms.

The region caters for a wide variety of holiday tastes including walking, watersports, family and cultural activities, exploring the countryside or just lazing on a wide expanse of sandy beach. Photographers and artists have immense number of opportunities to record spectacular coastal and countryside vistas.

The Purbecks can be easily accessed by road (2 hours from London), rail (mainline rail link to London) and air (nearest airport is Bournemouth).

Langton Matravers

The area of the Purbecks in which Kilderkin Cottage is located is a couple of miles from the seaside town of Swanage which can be easily accessed by car, bus or on foot.

The cottage is also close to a network of marked footpaths offering beautiful coastal and countryside walks to local villages and places of interest. The World Heritage Jurassic Coast can be explored on foot, boat trips from Swanage Pier or Poole Quay with the more distant parts of the coast being easily accessible by car or public transport. Close by are areas of National Trust grass and heathland teeming with wild life, the famous ruins of Corfe Castle (one that Oliver Cromwell knocked about a bit!) in its' village of Purbeck stone thatched cottages, Lulworth Castle near to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, The Tank Museum and Monkey World on the way to Dorchester, local museums and activity centres. The Swanage Steam Railway offering rail trips between Swanage and Norden is a very popular attraction for visitors of all ages. A wide range of watersports are available in Swanage, Studland and Sandbanks. There are boat trips between Swanage, Poole and Bournemouth, along the Jurassic Coast and around the National Trust's Brownsea Island - where Baden-Powell founded the Scouting movement. Fishing trips can be arranged near Swanage Pier. For those who enjoy a beach life, there are wide expanses of safe and sheltered sandy beach at Swanage and Studland. Beach huts are available and both beaches are served by small cafes and toilet facilities.

There is a village shop a 5 minute walk away from the cottage. Swanage has a wide range of local shops, a couple of supermarkets, pubs, restaurants, and cafes. It also has a small cinema. The bigger towns of Wareham, Poole and Bournemouth are good shopping centres with a wide range of chain stores. On-line grocery shoppers can have deliveries from a range of national supermarkets.

The Purbecks are well served by a range of annual festivals including music, arts, beer and cider. Swanage has a Carnival at the end of July with a wonderful fireworks display.

This is England so we cannot guarantee wall-to-wall blazing sunshine but Swanage Bay is sheltered from the extremes that the weather can throw at us and there are plenty of sunny days to deliver a healthy glow to even the fairest-skinned visitors.

“Everything about the house was lovely with great welcoming touches.”

Reviewed 12 Jul 2016

From the moment we entered the house we knew we were going to love staying there. The tastefully furnished rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean. All the beds were really comfortable as was the sitting room. The owners provided all the basic kitchen items we needed, as well as toys, games and bubbles for our granddaughter. It exceeded our expectations. We were able to go on a number of different scenic walks from the house, and fantastic beaches the steam railway and Corfe Castle were only a short drive away. We would love to return next year.

Thank you for this review. We are delighted to know how much you and your family enjoyed the cottage and the beautiful Purbecks. Please come again and tell your friends about us!
