Location description from owner
The Pays de la Loire region
The Loire Valley region
Situated between southern Normandy and the lower stretches of the Loire valley, Mayenne represents real French countryside. A haven of forests and hills through which farmers have watched conflicts over the centuries. The Mayenne river attracts both boaters and anglers alike and divides the department from north to south. Its 85 kms of towpaths are used by both cyclists and walkers The capital Laval boasts an 11th century chateau, originally home to the barons and counts of Laval untill 1794. Le Mans is famous for it's annual 24 hour endurance race and colourful lights display in the summertime
St Hilaire du Harcouet
St Hilaire du Harcouet is only 10 mins away from the cottage. Weekly livestock markets every Wednesday morning in front of the twin towered church are a delight for visiting children. It is possible to hire a pony and trap from the same square during the summer tourist season.
Across the main road is the weekly produce market where a delicious array of fresh delights await the discerning customer. The area is famous for it's beef, cream and cider. Indeed many of the local restaurants use these ingredients to provide good value meals and snacks. Most visitors enjoy a coffee and pastry and a chance to watch the world go by during their visit.
Visitors of ten and under will enjoy a visit to Jouet a toy store situated on the by-pass around St Hilaire du Harcouet.Next door to which is an excellent craft centre Cassiope.
From the square with the twin towered church it is a short walk to the park housing an artifical beach and two lakes surrounded by wildlife.
20 mins along the main road towards Domfront will bring you to St Frambault. This enchanting village won the prize for the prettiest floral village in France for several years running. There are numerous displays of flowers and bedding plants. Visit the little primary school gardens and see the latest generation being taught how to preserve their beautiful village. Wander down to the lake surrounded by flowers. Saunter along the banks to the little cafe where you can hire a pedalo for a leisurely trip around the lake accompanied by the local families of mallard ducks.
In the nearby village of Fougerolles du Plessis you can enjoy a three course lunch with wine for 10 euros at the Lion D'Or followed by a round of miniature golf.
From spring onwards, villages in France have diverse activities such as fetes and car boot sales. Indeed it is a rare weekend that there is not one or both going on nearby. Every summer our neighbouring village of Savigny holds a medieval evening commemorating the opening of the Abbey there in Medieval times.
Our village of Landivy, just half a kilometer away has two bakers, a small supermarket, butchers, chemist, bar / tabac and two hairdressers. A large supermarket is just 6 mins away by car.

“Fabulous two week holiday”
This is a lovely Gite, spacious, comfortable and well equipped. The Gardens are beautiful. The private pool was well maintained and the water was generally in the mid twenties celsius (we stayed for two sunny weeks in June). There are walking and cycling trails throughout the surrounding countryside (we borrowed the bikes that were on site). Barbara and Keith were perfect hosts. It was a good base to explore this area of Brittany/Normandy. Overall we had a very relaxing time and a very enjoyable family holiday.
“Excellent location, relaxing atmosphere and outstanding service.”
We couldn't have wished for a more friendly and charming stay, Les Freuberts is an exceptional place and run by Barbra and Keith with diligence, care and loving attention. It was more than a B and B as we felt so at home! Our room, the African suite, was large enough for our family of four for six nights, the spacious bathroom adjacent had a luxury feel, so too did the daily freshly changed sheets and towels. The breakfast of warm fresh croissants and homemade jams set us up for the day . However the garden is perfect for sunbathing as the weather in Landivy is actually 5 degrees hotter than the UK, this was a really pleasant surprise and delayed our outings! On the days we did manage to leave, Keith and Barbara were informative about the surrounding area and the location was ideal for getting to St Malo, Mont St Michel and Fourgeres. Last but not least Benji deserves a mention, their delightful Shih Tzu dog ,who my kids fell in love with ! I would love to book the Gite next time as we were able to see it before we left.
“A beautiful home from home, perfect for a relaxing family holiday”
We have just returned from 2 fantastic weeks at Les Freuberts. The gite is lovely, comfortable and very well equipped. The gardens are gorgeous, with tons of activities for our children (12, 11 and 10) to enjoy and the pool is superb. Barbara and Keith are excellent hosts, always available, but never in the way. We were sad to leave and very much hope to return.
Owner's reply: Thank you Joanne. We so enjoyed having you all here and really glad you enjoyed your holiday. We hope to see you someday in the future. Kind regards Barbara & Keith & Benji !
“Lovely for families”
We spent a week at Les Freuberts this August and would have happily stayed longer. The property is brilliant for families with young children. The pool, trampoline and large garden with play barn meant that our 2 and 5 year olds were kept endlessly entertained. We were able to sit in the beautiful surroundings with a drink and a book and relax in peace. A rare commodity when you have young children. There is enough to do within an hour's drive to fill a week easily. We had lovely days out at Mont St Michel and Fougeres and spent several hours investigating the lovely Fougeres forest and lake beach. We would have done more but the children were having too much fun at Les Freuberts.
“Brilliant place to stay”
Stayed at Les Freuberts with our Sons and his family that included our two young Grand Daughters We had a fantastic time, Barbara and Keith were the perfect hosts who were always available to answer our questions and help. The Gite is well appointed and ideal for families with plenty of space for the 6 of us and toys for the children and adults for wet days (of which we had none!) The pool is great and being enclosed is safe so the children can play out but not get into the pool unsupervised. The garden is great and the we'll eqipped "play barn" a tramplone kept our 4 year old fully entertained and more importantly safe The location is also excellent with many places to go within an hour or so drive We will certainly go again, and would recommend it to all Thanks Barbara and Keith we had a great holiday Alan
Owner's reply: Thank you for the great review. Much appreciated. We are doing maintenance now in the winter and you will be pleased to hear that a dishwasher is now installed!!! Hope to see you back one day. Regards Barbara & Keith & Benji!
