Lagrasse is known as one of the prettiest villages in France which is perhaps why it has attracted many artists who open their doors to visitors. The village is surrounded by vineyards and the Corbieres hills and yet is only 40 minutes from Mediterranean beaches and Carcassonne.

Vineyards and olive groves line the valley and the surrounding wild hills offer superb walking through umbrella pines with views to Pyrenees.

There are 5 excellent restaurants, a bakery with delicious cakes, a café/bar, shops, a busy delicatessen with ready prepared meal, tabac, post office, cash dispenser, doctors, chemist and many 'caves' selling their own excellent wine.

The 13th century market place (on our doorstep) has a market on Saturday mornings selling organic local produce. There are two shops and several wine producers and if all you want to do is relax in Lagrasse there is no need for a car.

The vineyards and olive groves of the river valley are an inspiration for artists; for those wanting more than an amble, the wild hills with their limestone crags, umbrella pines & cypress trees are on the doorstep. In the winter months there are breathtaking views to the snow capped Pyrénées.

Lagrasse's Abbey founded in the 8th century, is shared between the commune & the Chanoines monks both of whom welcome visitors. The tennis court, football & boules pitch are open to all & we are happy to lend you racquets & balls. The area is great for walking & mountain biking, river swimming & horse riding, all of which you can do from the doorstep.

There are castles to visit, the Mediterranean beckoning & the Canal du midi for a leisurely boat ride. If you want more activity there are walks from the doorstep, mountain biking, horse riding, fishing, tennis.

Swim or paddle in the river at the back of the house and wander underneath the 11th century bridge. The pebble beach of the river bank is a peaceful place for children to play and adults to sunbathe.

The 3 apartments can be rented together and sleep 17 people. There are also two sofa beds.

Kate & Roger have lived in Lagrasse and running the gites since 2001. They are on hand to give advice or suggest visits.

Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

"Lagrasse is an unspoilt gem"
Nick & Jan, UK

Lagrasse is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It lies in the foothills of the Corbières and yet is only 40 minutes from Mediterranean beaches and Carcassonne the most popular tourist attraction of the Languedoc.

"The gite is so well placed - there is so much
to do locally as well as further afield"
Sanjay & Reshme, Belguim

The village has 6 excellent restaurants, pizzeria, a bakery with delicious cakes, a café/bar, shops, a busy delicatessen with ready prepared meals, tabac, post office, cash dispenser, doctors, chemist and many 'caves' selling their own excellent wine.

The vineyards and olive groves of the river valley are an inspiration for artists; and for those wanting more than an amble, the wild hills with their limestone crags, umbrella pines and cypress trees are on the doorstep. In the winter months there are breathtaking views to the snow capped Pyrénées.

Lagrasse's Abbey founded in the 8th century, is shared between the commune and the Chanoines monks both of whom welcome visitors.
The tennis court, football and boules pitch are open to all and we are happy to lend you racquets and balls.

"We'll miss the perfect river swim - beats any swimming pool"
Karen & Karel, Seb & Charlotte, Belguim

Bird watchers will enjoy seeing Kingfishers from the open window and listening to nightingales which come back to the river bank each year to nest. Bee eaters can often be heard flying overhead and if lucky you get a flash of blue and yellow as they fly past. We are on the migration route and in autumn I have seen cranes and honey buzzards and nightjars. Little ringed plovers nest on our beach and black redstarts nest on the back wall of house.

Once here, if all you want to do is relax, there is no need for a car (we can arrange airport transfer for you).

"This is the perfect place to cycle & walk, the scenery, flowers
(particularly orchids) & wildlife here are second to none"
Greer & Bobby, UK

Many artists and potters have settled in the village and open their doors to visitors.

"It is by far the most stunning location we have stayed in,
the ambience is good & there is everything you need in the town"
Ralph & Lynne, USA

“A lovely break in a beautiful setting.”

Reviewed 2 Nov 2014

We had an enjoyable stay at the Market Gite. The owners were very helpful with tips for things to do and providing extras which we requested (towels, hairdryer, bag for the beach etc.) Lagrasse is beautiful and the sitting area next to the river with a view of the bridge and Abbey at the back of the gites was really lovely. Swimming in the river (wetsuits were needed as it was October) was a plus and, I imagine, would be wonderful in warmer months. The only shame for us was that many of the best restaurants in the village were closed for the winter.

“Beautiful spacious apartment in perfect village - and a river!”

Reviewed 10 Oct 2011

We stayed in the Market Gite which was beautiful and spacious. Three bedrooms - one with a queen and single, a well equipped kitchen and a really beautiful sitting room. Lots of books and videos, a table tennis table downstairs and a river out the back. The village itself is extremely picturesque and has nice restaurant, although minimal practical shopping (ie small and not all that well stocked supermarkets). Great patisserie though, and it felt special just walking around and sitting in the lovely Abbey cafe. Parking is a short walk away but you can unload by the property. A steep set of stairs through the basement takes you out to a small grassed area looking over a pebbled beach to a lovely little river, good for a swim. There are plenty of things to do nearby and Kate and Roger are knowledgable, helpful and available without being at all intrusive. Nice bath, good shower (over the bath), separate toilet. Also a piano! The kitchen, while well equipped, lacked a few basics like salt, sugar, coffee etc and it would be great if these could be stocked. One of the bedrooms overlooks the common internal stairwell and you need to be a bit careful with your curtain closing. Other than that hard to fault this delightful place.
