“Relaxing and private”
We've stayed at Casa Montaza several times now and it's like coming home every time we visit. Lisa is always here to welcome us with a big smile and a chilled bottle of wine! And she's also on hand to ensure that any small problems are fixed quickly and efficiently. This villa is a great place to stay and relax with friends. There's plenty of space for everyone to enjoy. The very private swimming pool (we always have it heated) is a delight and the gardens are gorgeous. We love waking up to the views every day. Lagos Marina is a 20 minute meander down the hill and the main town is just another 10 minutes beyond. There are lots of restaurants to enjoy (D. Henrique, Navegador, 2 Irmãos and the superb little Italian Trattoria Vecchio Milano are all favourites). If you don't want to go out, then the Pingo Doce supermarket at the bottom of the hill is very will appointed with super fresh fish and meat counters and freshly baked bread every day. Lagos, and the wonderful people of Portugal will welcome you with open arms! We can't wait to return again soon.
“Great spacious villa with lots of character and lovely views.”
We had a wonderful two weeks at Casa Montaza. The villa is not ultra modern but is spacious, furnished in a north African style with lots of character and is very well equipped. It has extensive gardens and a good sized pool with wonderful views of the sea, Lagos town and the surrounding area. The location is secluded and very peaceful and private. The marine is about a 10-15min walk and has a good selection of cafes, bars and restaurants.The centre of Lagos is about a 20 min walk and the beach about 25mins. The villa does have lots of steps both internally and externally which add to the character but may not be ideal for people with disabilities or families with toddlers. Booking through Caroline was absolutely hassle free and she provided really helpful information and on all aspects of Lagos and the surrounding area. The local representative responded immediately on the very few occasions we needed to contact her during our stay and our deposit was returned promptly. I will certainly look to book through Primealgarve Rentals if we rent another villa in this area.
Huge thank you to Caroline and team, was beautiful villa, plenty of space, clean and tidy. Flexibility with our late check out and early check in. Caroline going out of her way to help recommend transfers (Yellow Fish Transfers) which was a BRILLIANT service and so friendly. Will defiantly be returning next year.
“Beautiful Villa great location if you like piece and quite”
The villa was just as we were told, Well equipped, had everything we needed and more. The people we met at the villa, pool cleaners etc were very nice and polite. The only problem, not for us but could be for older people and young children, was the distance to the beach, it is more than 10 minutes walk . Lagos, more like 30 minutes, but not a problem for us, there was a local shop, with the basics, 10 minutes walk(brisk) But a great place to holiday and chill out
“A wonderful place to relax !”
The villa was lovely and had views across to Lagos. We could hear the ocean when we sat on the terrace having breakfast. It was so peaceful and a joy to spend time relaxing in the pool.It had plenty of space so we didn't feel crowded. Lots of terraces to get away from it all.Inside space was good. Well kept and of a high standard. Ignore the earlier bad review we cannot fault the villa or the care taken by the owner/caretaker.
“Luxurious house - splendid view - excellent service”
We booked Casa Montaza for the third consecutive year. Booking was perfectly organised. The owner welcomed us in person and was availabel for any request during our stay. The house offers all comfort one might wish for an enjoyable holiday: excellent beds, well-equipped kitchen, pool towels, WiFi, games, etc. We ordered housemaid service for three times a week, and Lisa was really taking care of everything. The view from the terrace and the pool is outstanding, and although the house is located in a very quiet place, you are on the beach, in the supermarkets and in Lagos town in five minutes. We will come back next year!
“Our wonderful holiday in Portugal”
My self and three Daughters, two Grand Daughters and Son -in-law stayed in a beautiful villa called CASA MONTASA . As we entered the kitchen we thought wow this is fantastic but it got better. as we all started running around the villa we could not believe the space here. The four bedrooms were so spacious, fitted wardrobes and all with fantastic views. The two bathrooms were just amazing, baths big enough to hold 2. The view from the heated pool was amazing, looking out to the sea. The kitchen had everything you could ask for. Caroline and Larry were just so helpful. Told us all the best and not expensive restaurants to visit to eat out. Caroline couldn't do enough for us. She even came to the villa twice to collect my Son-in-Law and took him to golf. Nothing was to much for them. We will be going back for sure.
“Expected so much from this villa but we were disappointed”
We loved the look of this property on the website but sadly we were very disappointed. Booked for an extended family celebration we all thought that, although the villa may have been impressive in its heyday, it is definitely in need of some TLC and maintenance work. The electrics in one room didn't work, a lot of the lights didn't work, the patio furniture was falling to pieces, and there is no air con. A villa of this standard should have air con. The ceiling fans were absolutely no use, they were old and rickety and made a total racket if set beyond the minimum setting. The bedroom doors were slatted as well, so there wasn't any real privacy in the villa as every little noise carried throughout. With an extended family with kids this didn't work well. The villa was also advertised as four bathrooms. Be warned, 'bathroom' apparently covers the toilet and does not necessarily mean a bath/shower room in the villa advertising world. There are actually only three bathrooms and one separate WC, even though they agent knew we wanted 4 separate bathrooms (ie. showers/baths at the time of booking). The pool area was nice but, unfortunately, there were rats running around right beside the patio. Not good. And the location is not ideal either, although it says 20 minutes to the town centre, this is only to the marina area and there's at least another 10 minutes walk to the old town area where the bars and restaurants are. And it's at least a 30 minute walk to the beach too. The villa did have some nice touches such as a pod coffee maker and an inbuilt water filter in the fridge but, overall, we were very disappointed with our stay and know there are much better villas in Lagos for the same price, if not cheaper.
I was very sad to hear from this guest that she did not enjoy her stay, as I take total satisfaction of guests at this and my other villas – as evidenced by the other reviews for here and elsewhere – as my absolutely priority. I was also very surprised that the first I was made aware of her disappointment was sometime after leaving the villa when the guest wrote to me asking for a partial refund, especially as her brother had met the owner subsequently in Lagos and confirmed that they had had a lovely stay at the villa. Notwithstanding this, it is important to address the issues raised (as I did to a very detailed extent in a large number of emails with the guest concerned). First, there seems to be a misunderstanding about the electrics . The power did indeed go off in one room (unfortunately sometimes these things happen, which can be a one off problem or more often relates to wrong voltage equipment such as curling tongs being plugged in). The guest contacted the owner, and he was at the villa within 15 minutes to establish the problem. He was in the process of contacting the electrician when the guests told him not to bother as they would manage without. Not wishing to intrude any further on to the guests’ privacy, the owner did as requested and left the repair until the day of departure (which was a five minute job by the electrician). Re the lights not working, a thorough pre rental check of all items is done before every stay and light bulbs are part of this process as is the check of all patio furniture. In this instance, despite having guests leave in the morning, I did facilitate this guest’s request for an early check in as there were young children in the party. This put a high degree of pressure on the staff (it is a very large villa to get properly clean) and the normal pre rental check was truncated in order that the guest and her family could start their holiday as quickly as possible. Despite this, if the guest had raised the issue of the light bulbs during her stay this could have been addressed immediately. Equally, the pre rental check did not pick up the broken sunbed and on this occasion, the guest did contact the owner who offered to have it repaired/replaced immediately but the guest told him not to bother as there were plenty of other sunbeds to use. The patio furniture is actually of a very high quality (pure teak and properly maintained each year) so I am not quite sure the basis for the comment about its quality In terms of the guests’ point about rats, I only wish if this had been the case that the guest had contacted either the owner, or myself or indeed my colleague when these were allegedly seen. Chipmunks abound in the area, as do Portuguese fruit rats which live in palm trees (no relation I would add to ‘dirty’ rats). The villa is set in acres of land (which is how it is able to provide guests with total privacy) and therefore quite possible that either of these did make a visit. However, there has never been a reporting of same before or after this guest’s stay, and I truly regret that the guest did not contact one of the numbers she had for her stay or take photos (so we could at least identify what type of ‘visitor’ purportedly turned up) on her phone. If there was a problem, then of course one would wish to be aware of it /take the necessary action but as there have been no sightings of same before or after this guest’s stay (or during the gardeners’/ pool people’s twice a week visits) there has been limited activity able to be done (and I certainly wouldn’t put rat poison down without evidence of a problem for obvious reasons) Finally, in relation to the guests’ point about air conditioning and bathrooms. First, the villa has never been advertised with air conditioning – the villa is constructed in a manner which does not require air conditioning (ie the house is cool in the summer and catches the ocean breezes that occur in the afternoon/evening). However, as a guest convenience, there are two sets of fans in every room – ceiling fans which fit with the authentic design/ambience of the villa and modern oscillating fans. After I received the guests’ comments on these fans I did arrange a visit to the villa before the next guests to check there wasn’t any undue mechanical problem causing the noise and do have to say that the fans were working as they should and with minimal noise (far less than the air conditioning units I have running as I write this whilst I am on holiday in Thailand). With regards to her point about bathrooms, the guest was a very ‘detailed’ booker and out of the 38 emails I received from her before her stay, at no point did she ask questions/mention the importance of bathroom layout (or air conditioning for that matter) in relation to this villa. If she had raised questions on either of these then they would have been answered as fully as all her other questions/special requests etc were. Finally, in terms of the comment about TLC and maintenance work required at the villa. The villa is very large, set in extensive grounds and regularly maintained. Indeed, before the main season of 2012 it was completely repainted throughout and additional ‘comfort’ touches added. The gardens are attended to twice a week and the pool likewise so I am not sure of the basis for this comment. A peek at the other trip advisor reviews for this villa will confirm that At the end of the day, and despite my detailed responses to the guest’s emails when she did contact me with her issues, I am extremely sad that the guest herself (albeit that her family appeared to) did not enjoy her stay. I was equally disappointed that the majority of issues raised were only done so after the stay, and were not brought to the attention of the owner, myself or my colleague during the stay so they could have been addressed without delay. I am sure that the guest was also disappointed that having contacted me 11 days after her return requesting a refund, this was denied for the reasons outlined in this review and my many emails to her on the subject. Despite this, I am still sad that after five years of renting this villa, there is now one unhappy guest as we all put so much effort into making guests’ holidays as perfect as they can be. This is evidenced from the Trip Advisor feedback for this and my other villas. Equally, given that the TripAdvisor placing is relatively recent, guest feedback prior to this is available to anyone who requests it. Indeed, in 2013 I have guests who are coming back for the fifth year in a row, which I think is testament to the position, quality and facilities of the villa and the service that guests receive from the owner and myself during their stays.
“Comfortable luxury villa, a home from home, great views and location”
Great service from Caroline before and throughout our stay. The weather at the beginning of our holiday wasn't great and we asked for our pool heating to be turned up which was done straight away. This meant that we could still enjoy the pool in the cool weather. The villa was very well equipped, everything we needed in the kitchen to cook at home. Lots of inflatables for the pool and toys to take to the beach. The open log fire was wonderful in the cooler nights. Outside the villa there were lots of different seating areas so would be great for extended family as lots of room for a bit of privacy. Lovely views from the villa, we could see and hear the sea. Great location, just up the hill from the Marina, but secluded and mostly quiet. Wish we were still there!
