Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

The department Aude has a 50 km coast line with beautiful beaches, lovely fishing villages, beautiful countryside, vineyards, lavender and sunflower fields, and with cities and villages like Limoux, Quillan, Narbonne, the book village of Montolieu and Carcassonne with their farmers markets, churches, museums, various culinary experiences and shops, it caters to everyone’s taste.

But perhaps the Aude is most known as the land of the Cathars, a group of Christian heretics who, in the 11th - 13th century were persecuted by the Roman Catholic church. Many Medieval castle ruins are a silent witness to that dark period in history: Saissac, Lastours, Montségur, Queribus, Puylaurens, Peyrepertuse and perhaps the most famous of all, the walled city of Carcassonne, the ‘Cité’.

Lacombe

Lacombe is a small village in the department Aude, part of the Languedoc-Rousillon, a quiet region in France which has yet to be discovered by the masses. There are no traffic jams and the deafening silence and star filled nights are magnificent. The Aude borders the Hérault and the Tarn on the north, the Mediterranean on the east, the Pyrénées-Orientales on the south and the Ariége and the Haute-Garonne in the west.

Lacombe lies on an altitude of 750 meters. Mountain weather pertains. The Languedoc is 'le pays du vent', whether it is the mistral, the marin or the tramontane, there is always wind, wonderful for sailors and keeps it cool in the summer.

For those who like peace and quiet and just relaxation away from it all, Le Fayet Haut is THE ideal holiday home.

BUT for those who don't, there is an awful lot to do and see in this part of France.
• Sports activities like rafting on the river Aude, carting on the course near Carcassonne airport, play tennis on the nearby court of St. Denis, go biking, not to mention the innumerable hiking paths which can give you hours of pleasure. There are a number of maps in the house
• visit the Cité of Carcassonne. Every July the festival of Carcassonne is held here with opera and concerts in the open air. The fireworks on Quattorze Juillet (July 14th) are unforgettable from the ramparts of the Cité.
• Limoux, the city famous for Blanquette, a white sparkling wine, piano museum and weekly market every Friday (or Thursday if a public holiday falls on a Friday).
• Montolieu is a typical French village some 6 km's from the house. It is known for it's bookshops. There are a few restaurants, a drugstore, a caffee and the men play 'Jeu de Boules' on the village square.
• Revel is a small city 25 minute drive through the Montagne Noire. It used to be known for it's furniture makers, but today it is especially the farmers market, held in a Medieval square in the cenrer of town each Saturday morning, which is not to be missed. The market was one of the locations frequented by chef John Burton Race in the Channel 4 programme 'French Leave'.
• Castelnaudery, not only famous as home to the French Foreign Legion, but also famous for the 'cassoulet'.
• Toulouse 'Ville Rose' or the Pink City, is a must for those who love to shop. It is a university town with many student pubs, restaurants, beautiful churches and museums. A visit to the Halle is worth your while, especially the lunch on the first floor!

“Lovely holiday retreat”

Reviewed 24 Jul 2016

We stayed with 3 small children in le fayet, and had the most relaxing time. The great pool makes the holiday, and the sheltered location in the mountain means temperatures are lovely when it's too hot in Carcassonne. The accommodation is like a home away from home, there's literally everything you need, plenty of books and magazines, and the kids have their domain upstairs which keeps clutter and noise away. A very charming house, remote enough to switch off but close enough to lots of things to do...the owner is very helpful with lots of details about the house and the area. Would highly recommend it if you want to discover a beautiful region, or just stay by the pool!

“Beautiful family home in idyllic French countryside”

Reviewed 9 Aug 2012

Le Fayet Haut is a beautiful home lovingly restored and furnished as a second family home. Everything we could have needed was to be found there including inflatables for the pool which the kids adored and books galore for the adults! We spent a wonderful 2 weeks there this July with 4 kids aged 7,8,10 and 14, us parents and my parents. The house sleeps 8 comfortably and the kids even had their own quarters with bathroom, bedrooms and living room, all upstairs. The house sits in a large garden given over to grass, perfect for running around in, the pool has the sun most of the day and is fully equipped with parasols and loungers, and there is a view of the Pyrenees in the distance. We went into Carcassonne a couple of times which was great and we also explored the local villages, Montolieu the book village, Lastours with the chateaux ruins and Fontier Cabarde with its musical evenings. All in all a perfect break in the perfect place.
