The Murcia region
The Costa Calida (warm coast) and Murcia region enjoys a warm climate with the highest average sunshine of anywhere in Europe.
The beautiful city of Murcia is just a 25 minute drive away and there you can enjoy excellent shopping and traditional Spanish cuisine. The city has a stunningly beautiful cathedral as well as a number of places of interest. Try the Tapas in the Plaza Des Flores. It has one of the oldest Tapas bars in Spain.
A little way out is a huge shopping centre, Nuevo Condomina. This is also where the brand new football stadium of Real Murcia is situated. They have just been promoted to the Spanish premier league.
Cartagena boasts a Roman amphiheatre. It is about 40 minutes drive away and is situated around a lovely natural harbour. The city was founded by Hannibal and became a very important Roman Port. The city is best enjoyed if you go through the suburbs and around the city centre to arrive at Parque Torres at the harbourside. From there a coffee by the water can be followed by a walk to the shops and a variety of fascinating buildings.
The Mar Menor or "little sea" is a huge inland saltwater lagoon. It has beautiful beaches and a nature reserve that is wonderful to walk along. This is where many Spaniards come to holiday and immerse themselves in the therapeutic mud on the edges of the salt flats. The water is shallow keeping it warm and very salty.
Los Alcazares is one of the beaches on the Mar Menor, and our favourite. The beach is really lovely and there is a good selection of bars and restaurants just a short walk from the beach.
National Parks are numerous and include the stunning and largely deserted Sierra de Espuna. A huge contrast to the lowlands of Murcia, a respite from the heat of summer and fabulous for walking, mountain biking and simply enjoying the panoramic vistas afforded by the terrain.
The region of Murcia is unspoilt and largely undiscovered by Brits. There are truly too many places too mention here but the area is well worth exploring.
La Torre Golf Resort
The Polaris World La Torre resort has a Jack Nicklaus - designed 18 hole golf course along with a number of bars and restaurants.
There is a supermarket on site.
There is a large range of facilities including communal swimming pools, children's play areas, tennis courts and gardens all around the resort.

We recently stayed in a lovely 2-bedroom apartment at the Golfing Resort in Mercia, where the large terrace gave a spectacular view across the distant hills. The bedrooms were light, airy and well appointed. The decor was pleasantly tasteful and the fittings, including the large fitted wardrobes in each bedroom, were of a very high standard. The beds were delightfully comfortable, and the compact kitchen contained everything we needed to make our stay perfect. The back of the apartment building gave on to a pathway leading to a blissfully large, well-kept private pool to which only residents of the nearby apartments were given access; it was quiet and restful and I can't think of anywhere more relaxing, a true get-away-from-it-all holiday in a beautiful setting. The local shops had a varied and eclectic mix of food and wine, should you want to dine in, but there were also a number of good restaurants at the local marina, which was only a 5 minute walk away. After eating, we would retire to the Irish pub next door, a busy and lively establishment with very reasonable prices. Sue Wells
