Description

Our house in La Malartrie is a lovely traditional stone property perched above the Dordogne on the edge of La Roque Gageac. Stone steps lead up to a long terrace with wonderful uninterrupted views along the river to the famous village of La Roque Gageac. Opposite, across the walnut groves in the valley, is the bastide town of Domme on the skyline.
The house has three bedrooms - one double and two twin - all overlooking the Dordogne. The double room on the ground floor has a king-sized bed and an en-suite shower room. Upstairs there are two lovely bedrooms with coombed ceilings, each with twin beds and each with a large bathroom off.
The terrace ( 9m x 2.5 m) is a wonderful outdoor living space. It's partly covered and has plenty of space to eat or just relax and watch the river rolling by. When you can tear yourself away from the view, wide french doors open directly from it into the lounge/dining room. There you'll find wi-fi, UK television channels, DVDs

La Malartrie is a really superb location for a holiday in the Dordogne. Within strolling distance of La Roque Gageac - designated 'one of the prettiest villages in France', it's set in the heart of the most celebrated part of South West France. No fewer than five castles are within a mile or two of the house and the famous medieval town of Sarlat is only 5 miles away. With the beautiful bastide town of Domme three miles away, Castlenaud just over one and Beynac around two you won't find a more central location to enjoy the best of the Dordogne's 'golden triangle' . In the village itself you'll find a boulangerie, gift and wine shops, a small grocers and several lovely restaurants to enjoy what the French do best! With the river only a short stroll away theres no shortage of places to swim. Canoeing is available from the village as are boat trips and tennis.

Location description from owner

The Dordogne region

La Roque Gageac has been formally designated "one of the prettiest villages in France" by the French Government, and who are we to disagree? Clinging to the cliffs overlooking the river Dordogne the the village has evolved, one house at a time, over a 1000 years to have a charm and personality of it's own. The beautiful local architechture with its honey coloured stone, steep perigordian roofs and pigoniers is a delight and pretty villages unfold round every corner.
The area around La Roque is steeped in history. From prehistoric cave dwellings, through Viking raids, the 100 years war in the middle ages and the Renaissance, each era has left it's mark. There are five chateaux within a mile or two of the village. Sarlat, with more listed buildings per square metre than any other town in Europe, is only 5 miles away. Domme, Castlenaud and Beynac are all within 3 miles - so the house is in the centre of the most celebrated part of the Dordogne.
The food here is world renowned and the markets sell produce often harvested that morning to provide the mouth-watering basis for anything you wish to cook. Good restaurants abound as do pretty terrace cafes and superb boulageries. Add to this the wealth of activities available - canoeing, horse riding , rambling, cycling, hot air ballooning - and the spectacular scenery and its hard to think of a better place to spend a holiday.

“Excellent cottage with beautiful views over the Dordogne”

Reviewed 26 Oct 2013

This cottage is a little gem, perched up from the road and looking out over the Dordogne and the beautiful town of Rocque Gageac. For the location parking was remarkably easy: a short flat walk along the old road. We just dropped down the driveway to swim in the river. We enjoyed the balconey most - dining there and watching the world (and canoeists) go by. The owner David was there for some our stay and was very hospitable and has a wealth of knowledge about activities in the area. Simon and Andrea
