Tucked between the Dordogne River and steep, dramatic stone cliffs, the village of La Roque Gageac is the picturesque location for this completely renovated, 3000-square-foot, stone house. Location description from owner

The Dordogne region

Perigord Noir (Black Perigord) is the most visited region of the Dordogne, and includes many of the sights that you will already have heard of. This part of the Perigord is the richest in terms of beautiful villages, magnificent castles, pre-historic cave paintings and caves rich in stalactites and stalagmites. It really is a wonderful area and well worth visiting. The dordogne river in the Perigord Noir stretches from the lovely town of Saint Cyprien to and on to Carlux on the Lot/Dordogne border.Close to La Roque Gageac are the "most beautiful villages" of Beynac, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle,and Domme. A little further south is the most beautiful village of Belves.Along this same stretch of river are the magnificent castles of Beynac, Castelnaud, les Milandes, Montfort and the Chateau de Fenelon as well as the wonderful gardens of Marqueyssac, on the river near La Roque Gageac and the gardens of Eyrignac near Salignac. There are also some caves in this part of the Perigord Noir though most are along the Vezere valley. Along the Dordogne valley are the caves at Domme, and the troglodyte dwellings under the main square of Belves.SarlatOf course the highlight of a trip to the Perigord Noir is the beautiful town of Sarlat, packed with history and beautiful buildings.

La Roque-Gageac

La Roque-Gageac is deservedly designated one of “les Plus Beax Village de France”. In medieval times, it was an important fortified village and later saw the addition of renaissance manors, including the Manoir de Tarde. It has retained its authentic character over the centuries, featuring attractive narrow stone streets and interesting homes, churches and public buildings. There is a weekly market, fabulous restaurants, a pizzeria and a bakery/pastry shop. For recreation, there are tennis courts, river beaches and canoes for rent. Completely sheltered by the cliffs, there is an area where the semi-tropical plant life survives year-round. A walking path that runs behind the buildings at the foot of the cliff provides great views. There are also pre-historic Troglodyte dwellings above. Within 15 min: The wonderful perserved towns of Beynac, Domme and Sarlat.

“A Fabulous Month”

Reviewed 10 Mar 2015

This is like living in a fairly tale. We spent a month at this house and had two sets of friends visit us during our stay. They also was in awe being there. The house is beautiful and decorated beautifully. The kitchen is very large and well equipped for anyone who wants to do a lot of cooking. Beautiful modern stove, microwave and dishwasher. The living room is very spacious and very comfortable to just relax after a busy day of touring in the area. A wonderful, large patio looking at the river, tiled rooftops and the beautiful countryside. The bedrooms are very large and comfortable beds and the bathrooms are modernized. We have stayed in the home before and can't really get enough of it. I would highly recommend this home to anyone and bring friends with you. There is pliantly of room for 3 couples or even four. We have been to La Roque Gageac several times over the years and we will only stay here from now on. I would give this an 11 out of 10 rating.
