The town of La Chatre is only 5 minutes from the cottage, with bars, restaurants (French, Italian, Chinese), patisseries, charcuteries, boutiques etc. Market day, Saturday morning, turns the normally quiet town into a buzz of activity as people arrive from miles around. On Saturdays it's best to leave the car at the cottage and take the short walk to the town centre. There are also 3+ good supermarkets to choose from, one within walking distance of the cottage. La Chatre has an indoor/outdoor swimming pool and for motor racing enthusiasts there is a formula 3 track on the outskirts of the town. The village of Nohant, only 5minutes drive away, was the home of George Sand the female author whose friends included Chopin, Berlioz and Delacroix to name a few. Her house and gardens are open to the public and Nohant hosts many musical events.

The surrounding countryside is flat and ideal for walking or cycling. There are many pretty little villages nearby to explore - the picturesque towns of Argenton-sur-Creuse, St Gaultier, Gargilesse all within a 40minute drive. There are beautiful lakes, gardens and chateaux nearby - Sarzay, St Chartier and Culan all within 20 minutes drive. Chateaux Valencay (70 mins) hosts beautiful Candlelit Evenings in August.

If gardens are of interest the beautiful Priory Notre-Dame d'Orsan (featured in Monty Don's gardens of France) is 50 minutes away. The stunning gardens of Apremont-sur-Allier inspired by Vita Sackville West's garden in Sissinghurst is 90 minutes away and the unbelievably peaceful Brenne National Parc, a lake district famous for birdwatching, is only 60/70 minutes drive.

Just wanted to say a big thank you for letting us borrow your beautiful house in La Chatre at such short notice. We were desperate to get away and have a relaxing time and thats just what we did. My husband loved the fishing and caught a couple of really big fish. We loved the whole area and didn't want to come home. Larraine - Felixstowe

Just wanted to say what a wonderful holiday we had in your cottage. We had a couple of rainy days where we lounged in the house and the rest of the week was scorching hot - so we lounged in the garden!

Your garden was lovely and relaxing, we saw lots of butterflies, lizards, frogs bats, and birds. We saw the coypu twice and saw an owl too.

The house was even more gorgeous than we imagined and it was lovely sitting in the garden room in the evening with the windows open and a glass of wine.Mark & Mandy - Notts

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. If our 4 week French holiday had to be curtailed to only 7 days at La Maison Rose it would have made the long trip over worthwhile.

Brian & Susan - Queensland, Austrailia

“A special place to spend our 25th Wedding Anniversary”

Reviewed 13 Sep 2014

We chose La Maison Rose from the photographs, it looked nice and was close to a nice looking town, La Chatre, the google street view did worry us a bit but we thought that we would use the cottage as a base to explore from. Well, once we arrived we found the photographs do not do the cottage justice, it is truly beautiful and was spotless clean. The view of the garden was fantastic, just a tip to any visitor, walk across the grass then close your eyes and smell the aroma of the mint that has been allowed to grow in the lawn. This is just a small thing but just helps to show magical this cottage is. Unfortunately our car decided once it had got us to the cottage it wanted a break too! 3 days and a garage bill later! But rather than ruin the holiday (as present to ourselves for our 25th wedding anniversary) we decided to explore La Chatre, what a lesson in don’t believe street view, it is everything we wanted to find, it felt to us very French with beautiful old buildings, some great cafes, bars and places to try out to eat. We have little French but we do try, and found that the people very helpful and understanding and we almost always got what we thought we had asked for! We spent time in the garden watching the wildlife, it may sound boring but watching Mr Mole make a molehill was actually so exciting, we also read all the visitor book, all but one shared our view. I think some people are only they complain. If you want a cottage for 2, with relaxed feel set within it’s own beautiful gardens that is within walking distance of a quaint French town with every thing you need Then La Maison Rose is it. I would also like to thank Steve again for trying to help, it was very kind of you.

“Comfortable and well equipped house set in beautiful grounds”

Reviewed 10 Sep 2014

La Maison Rose is a lovely house set in beautiful grounds on the River Indre a short walk from the market town of La Chatre. The property has everything you could need for a relaxing stay and is very spacious for two. The sun room is a great place to enjoy the morning sun overlooking the garden and river whilst sitting enjoying a croissant in the comfy chairs. It's a perfect spot for those who like to watch wildlife, with kingfishers, woodpeckers and even a coypu to keep an eye out. Just a short walk finds you in La Chatre with lots of boulangeries to choose from and a great selection of restaurants. We enjoyed lovely meals at both La Casa Romana with a riverside table and A la Table de Babeth where the food is excellent and good value for money too. The directions to the property got us there with no problem at all and there's lots of helpful information provided to help you decide what to do whilst you're there but the house and grounds are so relaxing you might find yourself wanting to laze around!

“A little piece of French perfection - exquisite”

Reviewed 15 Jul 2014

La Maison Rose was perfect in every way for us and the holiday we were looking for. We weren't sure what to expect when we arrived as some photos can be quite deceiving but everything was as true as the website stated. We found the cottage easily - driving from Dieppe with our Sat Nav. The entry to the cottage was explained very well in a detailed sheet and we had no problems gaining entry to the front door once we had arrived. We couldn't quite believe how perfect everything would be. The interior decoration of the cottage was to a high standard, clean, very welcoming and homely at the same time. A vase of flowers was waiting on the very large wooden kitchen table and smelt heavenly. The kitchen was a good size with everything that you could need to both cook and eat. The sun room was a nice size and ideal for many relaxing times with the hot sun beaming in first thing in the morning while you had your coffee and croissant and for reading in the late afternoons in the comfortable armchairs supplied. The cottage came with everything you might need for your stay, including bin liners, an umbrella, ironing board and iron, hairdryer, towels, bed lining, tea towels, toilet rolls, kitchen roll, foil and cling film, candles and matches, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, cooking utensils, a game of Boules, board games, numerous CDs, books, a BBQ, garden tables and chairs. Upstairs is open-planned and very romantically decorated with such incredible views of the garden and lavender from the bathroom windows. Again it was very clean upstairs and decorated very stylishly with a smart old fashioned bath on legs with a shower and a very comfortable bed and a toilet sectioned off. There is no TV availability but that didn't matter as we took our portable DVD player and watched a film if we felt like staying in. The actual location of the cottage was ideal for us and just what we wanted. We were within a 5 minutes walk of the nearby town La Chatre which was perfect to find little french cafes, patisseries, and restaurants. Obviously you will have to do your own research to find which ones you like the best :-) All in all we have never relaxed and forgotten about all our troubles and every day stresses and strains as much as we did whilst staying at La Maison Rose. We would honestly recommend it to anyone and have been doing so. We must also add that although the owners, Marian and Colin do not live near the cottage (they have caretakers Maureen and Steve who live a short distance away from the cottage) they were very kind and helpful in every way possible - they made our trip trouble free by having directions and instructions for everything that you would need and constantly kept in touch right from the booking of La Maison Rose and even on the return journey. We can't say it enough - it was perfect - and perfect for what we wanted as a holiday.

“amazing home (not house!) and gardens”

This was an a wonderful experience , the house was just the most unusual but delightful home .There was not any thing you could have asked for more. and the garden was bliss wild life , flowers and peacefulness. La Chartre was a lovely typical French town with some wonderful places to eat. The down side is that I cannot think of any thing to say, Oh may be we wish it was nearer, to make more visits. “La Maison Rose was a beautiful peaceful sanctuary, yet close to everything.”

Reviewed 22 Jul 2013

We stayed at La Maison Rose June 22-30, 2013 and loved the cottage, the garden and the river. It was such a peaceful sanctuary with beautiful birds, far enough off the downtown flow of traffic yet close enough to walk there. The kitchen was large, warm and inviting and decorated in a cheerful combination of colors. It was also well appointed and my husband loved cooking in it. The garden room was wonderful with all the French doors that we could open and almost bring the garden into the room. During the evenings we enjoyed playing the many board games and listening to Colin and Marian’s great music collection available. The upstairs bedroom was open concept with plenty of storage, and very comfortable. We highly recommend this lovely cottage for a special stay that beckons’ tranquility, peace and a place to regroup after a day of touring or in our case painting ……with all our grocery needs, restaurants, markets, and people watching so very close. A lovely

“Wonderfully relaxing place to stay.”

The gite was wonderful, beautifully clean and very comfortable. The fixtures, fittings and furniture were all of high quality. The garden (and its furniture!) was fabulous. The weather was good for the first 3/4 days but then, sadly, deteriorated (in common with the rest of Western Europe, so it would seem). However we made full use of the garden room enjoying the view, the flowers and watching birds till late in the evening! A really relaxing week and no real need to use the car. All necessities of life (food and wine) easily obtainable on foot in La Chatre, Should we venture into central France again we will be looking to book another stay at La Maison Rose!

“La Maison Rose - superb wonderful character”

Reviewed 22 Sep 2012

We had a wonderful week. Enjoying the gardens in the sunshine and even better enjoying evening meals cooked in the most wonderful kitchen. This followed by after dinner drinks in the garden room listening to the many CDs supplied - what better. The gite was so clean and comfortable. Lots to explore in the area. La Chatre is an interesting little town and very accessible.

“Had a great holiday”

We stayed at La Maison Rose for 1 week, and had a brilliant time. The cottage is really nice and it was great to have a lovely big garden to relax and enjoy the sunshine. The cottage is really well equipped and we put the BBQ to good use during our stay. There is loads to do in the surrounding area but you really need a car to enjoy these things, great markets superb vineyards, water sports, lovely little towns and villages to wander around. Although we did alot while we were in La Chatre it felt like a really relaxing holiday. We loved it.

“La Maison Rose - wonderfully quirky - what a find!”

Everything about this property was amazing. Spotlessly clean and every comfort to make for a wonderful holiday had been provided by the owners - we could not have asked for anything more. The garden was absolutely fantastic with so much wildlife to watch, sitting, as we did, glass of wine, glorious sunshine - heaven! The town is an absolute must as are the very many beautiful villages and places of interest which are very accessible.
