The Burgundy region

The village of La Charité-sur-Loire is just two hours beyond the hustle and bustle of Paris; nestled on the banks of the Loire river on the Western edge of Burgundy. A village steeped in rich history and enveloped in culture...La Charité will nourish your mind and your soul. This centuries old Medieval town has withstood many battles throughout history, including the Wars of Religion and the Hundred Years War, where in 1439 Joan of Arc besieged this town. From the middle ages to the present day; people have come and gone leaving their mark...making La Charité what it is today. La Charité is a town of about 6,000 inhabitants “les Charitois.” It is on the major train route from Paris with six direct trains daily. (2hrs). It is 20 min. from the city of Nevers(30,000pop.) and 45 min from the city of Bourges(65,000 pop). The wine villages are practically on your doorstep, as close as a 10 min. drive.

La Charite-sur-Loire

There are at least seven boulangeries and pastry shops, fifteen or more restaurants and eight bars to serve you. Three butchers, deli’s and other specialty cheese, chocolate and wine shops along with a weekly year-round outdoor market. This is a designated “book town” and there is a book fair every third week-end from April- Oct. It is also an Art and Music town and it plays host to many different events throughout the year, Piano, Jazz and Blues to name a few. Many of the concerts are free and open-air, others are performed in the Cathedral or other venues in town. Anytime you venture out in this village, a feast of culinary and visual arts await. Culture and friendly locals permeate this town, you will be warmly welcomed and treated kindly....however...please remember to observe the local customs and greetings...always say Bonjour!

"A lovely cottage for two in an interesting region"

We really enjoyed our stay in Maison Vauyon - part of a longer train trip across Europe. The house combines comfort - a good bed, all the appliances and kitchen stuff we needed, plus DVDs and books - with plenty of character, which was exactly what we were looking for. Our only issue was with the low ceiling on the stairs, because we're both over 6ft and kept on smacking our heads on the way up to bed! But other than that, it was a great place for the two of us to stay. Linda replied to all our e-mails promptly and was very helpful with arranging our last minute booking. La Charite itself was interesting enough to fill a couple of days, and we loved wandering around the back streets and by the river. We were car-less, so getting about was a little tricky - though there's a train service between a few nearby villages. The town market (and patisseries) were excellent, and I think there are regular events throughout the summer - our stay coincided with a big antiques market.

"Modern stone cottage in a medieval setting -- perfect!"

La Charite is a delightful small French town with lots and lots of history. We cycled along the Loire and through the rural areas and enjoyed every minute. Didn't have a car and didn't need one. The stone cottage is traditional French but with great modern conveniences in the kitchen and bath. And, the Wiebes are good hosts and very helpful. We liked it so much, we've already booked the cottage for our next 2-week visit.

Thanks for the wonderful review! We really enjoy the many gentle bike paths throughout the area as well. Whether cycling along the Loire or into the nearby vineyards, it is always a picturesque and enjoyable adventure!

"Romantic and wonderful"

We spent 1 week in Maison Vauyon in La Charite and enjoyed every minute of it. It was very clean and welcoming when we arrived and we were able to settle right in and be out and about getting with the village. All of the amenities of the cottage were well maintained and modern and it was very comfortable. We especially enjoyed the fact that the cottage had been restored to its original appearance. The owners had prepared a binder which gave suggestions for day trips from the cottage, and because of that we were able to see and enjoy so many of the attractions within a day's drive from the village. I highly recommend Maison Vauyon to anyone looking for a comfortable accommodation located in a very interesting and quaint medieval village in France.

Making your stay enjoyable is very important to us, that is why I have put together this binder of self-guided day trips in the area. I'm glad that you enjoyed the village and the other local recommendations. I had fun putting this together, I am now working on a few other ideas, any comments from past guests would be welcome.

"Village Life in France...Doesn't get much better than this!"

Maison Vauyon, a wonderfully restored stone cottage, set in the quaint village of La Charite sur Loire, exceeded our expectations. The accomodation was very comfortable with all the modern amenities one might need. A number of pleasant surprises to discover here! The house is in a quiet neighbourhood, only minutes from the boulangerie for fresh daily croissants. The village centre is only a 5 minute walk away. We enjoyed visiting the market, many shops, the historic church and renting bikes from the local tourist office. There are miles of bike trails along the Loire and the canals. During our week in La Charite, we also made several day trips into the surrounding wine country and to other impressive historic sites in Burgundy. The best part of staying at Maison Vauyon is that you are miles away from the tourist-congested cities of France, which makes for a very peaceful holiday, with space to enjoy the details.

La Charite-sur-Loire really is a gem of a town, truely off the tourist-bus trail. Glad that you enjoyed the "real French experience" this warm and friendly town is always very welcoming!
