The Pays de la Loire region

La Vendée has a superb, sunny climate. The region's historical importance has left it plenty of churches and historical buildings. The countryside is hugely varied, with a coastline (about an hour away) of long sandy beaches, lush forests and the dreamy canals of the Venise Verte.

There are many towns and cities to explore (about an hour by car) – La Rochelle, Nantes, Niort, Cholet. La Roche sur Yon (45 mins), Poitiers (90 mins). The celebrated Loire Valley lies just to the north of the region.

The Grand Parc du Puy du Fou (just over an hour) provides a great day out for the family - see www.puydufou.com/uk.

La Caillere-Saint-Hilaire

Closer to home are the Tower of Bazoges en Pareds, the Museum of the Two Victories Clemenceau-de Lattre at Mouilleron en Pareds, the Mining Centre at Faymoreau, the abbeys at Nieul sur l’Autise and Maillezais, the Forest of Mervent- Vouvant and the Venise Verte.

There are weekly markets at many nearby towns. Chantonnay (15mins) has a very good supermarket, other general shopping, and a swimming pool. The village has an excellent butcher, baker and good basic shops.

“A little piece of heaven!”

Reviewed 23 Sep 2012

What a superb location right in the middle of the countryside! La Branjardiere made an excellent base with so many small towns and villages close by. The cottage is ideally located within close proximity of Chantonnay, Fontennay le Comte, Pouzauges and also the seaside resort of La Tranche sur Mer (approx a 45 min drive away). The cottage was extremely comfortable and well equipped a real "home from home" experience. Couldn't fault it. . Probably one of the most relaxing holidays we have ever experienced and we look forward to returning within the near future. Thank you Julia for allowing us to stay at La Branjardiere

“La Branjardiere..........La Fantastique.”

Reviewed 19 Sep 2012

What a fabulous cottage. La Branjardiere has been lovingly restored by the owner Julia. It has all the comforts of home whilst retaining a charming character and many wonderful original features. It is extremely well kitted out, and comfortable, infact Julia has thought of just about everything. Its location is ideal for exploring the Vendee region, and after a full day out its great to return to such a peaceful retreat. The nearest main supermarkets are at Chantonnay approx 8 miles, and in the opposite direction at Fontennay Le Comte approx 13 miles, both very nice places. A trip to the coast will take about 75 mins. Both La Rochelle and Les Sables D' Lonne well worth a visit. All in all we had a fantastic 2 weeks with our two daughters. This region of France is well worth a visit, and you couldn't wish for a nicer place to stay. I must also add that Julia was lovely to deal with, and even took the time to ring us the day after we arrived to check that we were ok. I would highly recommend this wonderful old cottage.

“I can't rate this beautiful gite highly enough”

This must be the perfect gite. A great location in the lovely Vendee in a small village with everything on hand within a few kilometres. It really lives up to the photos - including the sheep grazing over the fence. I only wish it was April to see the Wisteria. The gite is beautifully decorated while feeling homely and welcoming. Julia the owner has thought of everything. It's all very easy and relaxing which is just what you want. A lovely home from home from which to explore all the fabulous towns and villages.
