La Azohia - the jewel of the Costa Calida. Once you have felt its magic, you will want to return...

At the most easterly point of the sweeping bay of Mazarron, tucked away beneath a dramatic mountain backdrop enjoying a unique micro climate and crystal clear, safe, shallow waters is the lovely traditional fishing village of La Azohia. With all the amenities of bustling neighbouring resorts only a 10 minute drive away, this idyllic haven is the perfect base for a seaside family holiday, romantic getaway or for exploring the many attractions of the Murcia region. Come and visit the beautiful La Azohia cove where time stands still for a taste of real Spain at its best.

La Casita is a luxurious 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom upper holiday property occupying a truly magnificent front line corner plot with glorious elevated and completely uninterrupted south westerly views right over the village to the quaint marina where at night you can see the twinkle of lights as the sun sets over the bay. Whether sitting out on the sunny terrace off the lounge or making full use of the huge private solarium, with its traditional stone BBQ, table/seating, sun loungers and pergola, the open views from La Casita are quite unsurpassed on this already much sought after development.

Furnished to the highest of standards with leather corner seating and traditional Spanish solid wood/rattan furniture finished in a cool blue you will find this a most welcoming holiday home. Everything has been thought of to ensure your comfort. Unattached on three sides the property is especially bright, airy and quiet with ducted air-conditioning and central heating for year round living.

In a little more detail...

As well as full air conditioning/heating in all rooms there is the addition of ceiling fans. Other extras include digital/satellite TV and an upgraded 100L water heater (double the standard size supplied) essential for parties of 4-6. The kitchen is extensively equipped with a large Bosch fridge freezer, dishwasher and high spin (1200 rpm) washer. The master bedroom has a 150 cm bed and en-suite with bath/shower over and there is an additional shower room off the hall. The double room has a 135 cm bed and the twin two 90 cm singles. Children/babies are fully catered for with cot, high chair, portable safety gates, changing mat, microwave bottle sterilizer and many other items including children's/babies' crockery/cutlery.

Occupancy Notes:

We feel that in order to enjoy a property at its best it should not be unreasonably over-occupied and that bedrooms are for sleeping in and lounges for living in! For this reason there are no sofa beds. La Casita is intended to be your 'home' and not just somewhere to sleep. However, we do have a guest bed with a lightweight quilt/bedding suitable for use in the master bedroom which will accommodate a child or young adult (7th guest) and which is available at our discretion depending on your party make up.

Outdoors:

The lounge terrace faces south west with wonderful sunset views and is covered by the floor of the solarium above giving welcome shade in the day time - the ideal place to escape the sun for your lunch. There are steps up to the enormous solarium from the front terrace (75 sq metres), for the exclusive use of La Casita guests, which due to the superb front line location has uninterrupted open views over the village below to the harbour and Tower of Saint Elena beyond. There is a stunning stone tiled BBQ in traditional Spanish chimney style plus a large commercial grade picnic bench accommodating 8 under the cover of a shaded pergola with electric lighting over, plus four commercial quality sun loungers. There is a shower and power point. Both the terrace and solarium are enclosed by gates for the safety of children and have walls or railings around all edges. The pool is just a few minutes walk away - conveniently placed but sufficiently far away as to not allow any disturbance from pool noise. The shallow end is a standard regulation depth of 900 mm.

Location description from owner

The Region of Murcia region

When heading South from the great stretches of beach around the Mar Menor lagoon, the coastline becomes increasingly mountainous with just occasional isolated coves and once south of Cartagena the scenery becomes ever more stunning. Half way between Cartagena and the now bustling resort of Puerto Mazarron there is a turning off the main road to the beautiful fishing village of La Azohia, at the most easterly point of the Gulf of Mazarron. The mountains finally recede behind a promontory called Cabo Tinoso, giving way again to vast stretches of beach which go all the way to Puerto Mazarron and beyond. The village is in a truly beautiful location, still closely bound by a backdrop of dramatic scenery before the gulf deepens further inland, which not only protects it from easterly winds but, perhaps more importantly, from further development.

The internationally renowned spa town of Archena with its fantastic thermal hydrotherapy pools is only around an hour's drive away at the gateway to the beautiful Ricote valley. For cultural excursions the town of Cartagena with its ancient port and Murcia with its magnificent Baroque cathedral, boasting the highest spire in Spain, should not be missed. Both have El Corte Ingles department stores for those with shopping in mind. A little further afield in the north of the region can be found many ancient towns such as Caravaca de la Cruz, one of the five Holy Cities. There are also many colourful markets and fiestas. There are several golf courses nearby including the famous La Manga Club. Opportunity for wonderful walking is provided in the local hills or the Sierra Espuna natural park inland with its snow-capped mountain. Our guests are provided with a comprehensive and detailed travel guide to ensure they make the most of this diverse corner of Spain.

La Azohia

El Pinar de San Gines (known as The Pines) nestles behind lovely mature villas in the exclusive San Gines district of La Azohia on the lower slopes of the mountain, on what was pine forest. It is in an incredibly quiet and peaceful spot yet just a five minute walk through lovely residential avenues to the best part of the seafront and a couple of good restaurants. It was the first (and is likely to be the only) development of its kind to be allowed here and is built in traditional Andalucian 'pueblo' style in order to be in keeping with the surroundings – with winding paths, lovely private gardens and communal swimming pools. The development has taken on the air of a village within a village and proved very popular with families as children can play safely. A bread van drives by the property every morning (except Sunday) selling breads, croissants and delicious empanadas (savoury pasties.)

The beach at La Azohia is gently shelving with shallow, warm waters with sand underfoot and a beautiful new palm-lined promenade stretching two miles ensuring a memorable 20 minute evening stroll along the sea front as the sun sets across the bay. Much prized by the Spanish the sea here is considered among the clearest in Spain and has been granted blue flag status for many years with the deeper waters at Cabo Tinoso known by divers far and wide for their colourful sea beds and by the local fishermen who still bring in their daily tuna catches to the quaint marina.

Seasonal seafront facilities along La Azohia cove include water sports, showers and snack bars. There are children's play areas and, around the marina, several professional diving schools, a church and excellent restaurants serving varied menus to include fresh seafood. Perched above the marina on the lower slopes of the mountain below the tower of St Elena is the famous Antipodas Tavern, a restaurant and bar in the most superb location facing west overlooking the sea. As dusk falls you can experience fantastic sunsets reflected in the water. There are around ten bars/restaurants along the seafront from 5 to 20 minutes walk from La Casita. In the summer months the Rockola Summer Club springs into life - a bar on the beach with an eclectic mix of live music and old favourites from the likes of the Eagles, Bob Dylan and James Taylor. This is a great place for families as children can run around on the beach while parents relax. There is a small but well-stocked supermarket less than 5 minutes walk away from La Casita. The area is well known for fishing and come early evening you will see the locals unwind awaiting a catch. A beautiful 45 minute walk along an easy path that hugs the sea brings you to the neighboring village of Isla Plana with several restaurants including the excellent steak house, La Chara, providing an alternative evening excursion. More extensive facilities can be found in the bustling port of Mazarron just 10 minutes drive away.

Is a car necessary?

This really is a subjective question since it will depend on the purpose of your stay. For a relaxing beach side or walking holiday the combination of La Casita and La Azohia has everything you could need. You are provided with 24/7 WIFI along with a personal food ordering service provided by our agent, supplemented by a small but well-stocked Spar shop in the village, as well as a chemist. You have a choice of many restaurants and bars along the sea front and several around the marina. A bus service runs from La Azohia through Isla Plana to Puerto de Mararron and also to Cartagena. Although limited, if you organise your trips you can catch connections to many places. A taxi rank in Puerto de Mazarron will always guarantee your return home if you miss a bus.

“Highly Recommend!”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2016

Travelled with three boys (10,10,13) and all had a fantastic time. The apartment is lovely with everything you need and fantastic sea views. Five mins to the beach and boys loved the pool! Found great water park / go-karting / football on the beach and lovely sea walks to great restaurants - owner so helpful and information pack and arrival process excellent. On top of this excellent wifi and perfect location to relax - we definitely plan to return and for longer!

Thank you so much for your wonderful review. I am so happy that you enjoyed your holiday but this is also very useful for prospective guests. I hope we see you again soon.

“Two weeks are not enough.....”

Reviewed 11 Jan 2015

From the great correspondence from the owner to the easy drive from either Murcia or Alicante airports, this apartment has it all. The views from the balcony and roof terrace, the well equipped kitchen, the peaceful surroundings, the access to the web (always a great selling point to those of us with teenagers) all this and only 6 minutes walk to a beautiful beach that even at weekends is never too crowded to catch those rays of sunshine we all crave. A short walk to a Spar store that have all a holiday maker requires and friendly staff always willing to help.My family and I have rented this apartment several times, never disappointed. If you book this apartment make sure you spend many an evening on the roof terrace as the sun begins to settle in the distance, you will see another beautiful side to La azohia, the stars look close enough to pluck from the sky, truly remarkable. As my review title suggest "two weeks are not enough"
