Description from owner

Description

In early 1814, en route to the Battle of Toulouse, Wellington's army marched along the Save Valley following what is now the D17. At that time they would have passed the recently built Moulin de Samaran. After a century and a bit of grinding wheat into flour. the Moulin was substantially re-built during the 1990s when it was converted into gites.

Knoops Cottage is situated at the rear of the main mill building and has its own private entrance, terrace and small woodland garden. The front door opens into the main reception room and galley kitchen. An open-plan staircase leads to a galleried landing, off which are one double bedroom and one twin-bedded room, together with a family bathroom with separate shower cabinet.

Whether sitting on the terrace dining “al fresco” on the wonderful warm evenings or sitting around the log fire on the chillier evenings of early Spring or late Autumn, the cottage has everything needed to relax.

There is a small selection of books in the bookcase but a larger selection, together with games, are available in the main entrance to the apartments. In addition there is a large library of DVDs and CDs.

Recommendations for both walking and driving tours, together with maps are also available.

On the western bank of the River Save, the grounds extend over some 14 acres comprising a small formal garden, lawned areas and meadow. Overlooking the river is the large sun terrace with additional barbecues, together with the poolhouse which contains the plunge pool, sauna and for the energetic, some exercise equipment.

Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

Situated in the Haute-Garonne Department of the Midi-Pyrenees region, the area is famed for its ancient towns, villages and rolling agricultural countryside. Toulouse, referred to as "the Rose City" is an architectural gem, straddling the River Garonne. It is a city which seems to be made up of separate "villages". Starting in the Capitole, a gentle stroll will take visitors to the older part of town or past the Donjon to the vibrant shopping streets. If peace and quiet is a preferred alternative to a busy city, then head south through the Valley of the Save towards the mountains. The famed delicacy, fois gras, is at the top of every gourmet's list and is readily found throughout the departement. Still referred to by its ancient name of Gascony, home of d'Artignan, all Gascons are justly proud of their rolling hill and, beautiful cities and interesting villages.

L'Isle-en-Dodon

Situated on the banks of the River Save, 4.5 kms south of L'Isle-en-Dodon, the Moulin de Samaran is ideally situated to explore all the facets of Gascony. L'Isle-en-Dodon is a sleepy country town which has yet to succumb to all the rigours of modern life. It has a number of cafes, restaurants and bars and a bank, together with a convenience store and a supermarket on the edge of town which is open six and a half days a week. The Pyrenees are a forty minute drive away and for those of a more adventurous bent, a day trip to the Pic du Midi is a must. For those who enjoy rooting around at markets, it is possible to visit one every day of the week. The largest being at Samatan on a Monday morning which comprises both a livestock and foie gras market, together with traditional market stalls. it a number of ancient sites, both in the valleys and on the mountain tops. Each summer "Les 31 Notes d'Ete" are held, during which concerts and recitals are offered throughout the area. Many are free or for a nominal charge.
Should you tire of the Gascon fare, Spain and tapas is about an hour's drive away. For those who enjoy an adrenalin rush, then a day trip to Andorra would be an ideal fix.
